Re: two new pokies! DUW
You have a bunch of Ts and your afraid of them? That's a riot. Although I'm not one to talk. They definitely creep me out! I'm doing better now, and don't run screaming anymore. :D

Re: two new pokies! DUW
hey, have any of you ever heard me say i'm brave? well that's cause i'm a total chicken. some days i don't even want to pic up my snakes cause they are 'looking at me funny' and i figure they are going to bite me LOL
so trust me... i got these critters to get OVER my fears... i didn't say i have 100%. but considering i couldn't even look at a pic of snakes or spiders a year ago... i think i've come a long way! :D

From the bottom of my heart and as I run away like a scurred little girl... :)
I love animals but I have to draw the line somewhere. I used to work at a supermarket when I was a kid and sometimes worked in produce. You wouldn't believe some of the stuff that came in with the shipments of fruits and vegetables from other countries.

Re: two new pokies! DUW
lol Aleesha you and I are in the same boat...I was asking Matt the other day about his Ts and i'm starting to take interest in them but I am scared of them even tho i know they're pretty much harmless. i want to get one to help me get over my fears too but i don't think my roommates are gonna be pleased with me.

You were scared of that little Ball Python too...Maybe you should start with a stuffed animal replica of a Tarantula? :D

Re: two new pokies! DUW
oh nate, don't let yourself fall into that "they are pretty much harmless" dream. pokies are very harmful if given the chance. my obt... she would looooove to sink her fangs into your finger or arm and brachys, well they love to flick hairs at you and your arm is itchy for a couple of days afterwards. wouldn't want those hitting my face!
a healthy respect and understanding of their potential is important... and then you let that go and enjoy their beauty... :wuv:

Re: two new pokies! DUW
....as long as I know where the spider is....I am fine....it is the ones that sneak up on me that freak me out ;)
Glad to see you are getting over your fears Aleesha......most people get the 'kill them all' kinda attitude towards spiders and snakes because of their fear.....You definately took the better approach :D

Re: two new pokies! DUW
thanks daniel. i know that part of my 'drive' is to assist others to get over their fears as well. which is why i carry my snake to the petstore when i go. i show my critters to people all the time... it's a free tour LOL - so many people ask to come over and see what we have and if they seem to really want to... i bring them over and let them experience our zoo. :wuv:

 you've never seen one of us "dedicated" invert keepers shriek when one of them started running toward us either :P
I managed to cup an OBT a couple inches away from my shorts, thankfully.
I like T's, but I don't want them running up inside my clothes to hide, thank you

Re: two new pokies! DUW
ESP an obt!!!! they are called "orange bitey thing"

Re: two new pokies! DUW
I'm glad even you T lovers are a bit afraid of them! It makes me feel loads better. People always laugh that I love snakes but am creeped out by a little spider.

Re: two new pokies! DUW
I've never tried to handle my T's either (I only have 3), but for the most part, it's because I'm afraid I'll hurt them, rather than vice-versa. Now that my g. aureostriata is a little bigger, I may try to handle it after the next molt, as I will have to transfer it to a new enclosure anyway. My rosie sling is about the size of a housefly, so handling it wouldn't be a big deal, but again I'm afraid it would get hurt. My a. geniculata sling is around the size of a silver dollar, so I'm sure I could handle it, but they have a rep for being somewhat nervous, and it's fairly quick, so I think I will just leave it be.

That's what makes me hesitant to hold the fast ones like my pinktoe - it could go tearing off and a 4 foot drop from my hand to the floor could be curtains for her. Recapturing them once loose too always makes me nervous about accidentally hurting them in that process. When I rehoused my l.parahybana and had to pop a 2L bottle (bottom) over it for the move it took several attempts before I was comfortable I wasnt going to lop off a leg.
Our rosehairs are pretty trundly so I don't have a problem holding those - though its really not something i do very often at all - I'm perfectly content to just watch them all for the most part.

Re: two new pokies! DUW
it really isn't recommended to hold Ts for the reasons stated. a drop will kill them, or they can loose a leg etc. they are such fragile creatures. we do all our work in the tub. with the drain plugged and a towel on the bottom so if they do jump, they have a soft landing. the towel tends to slow them down as well ;)
my hubby handles them a little when we are moving them to a new viv but that's usually because they climb on him, not that he's picking them up.
personally, i want the best for them and in our home and in my opinion, handling isn't the best for them. we have soooo much stuff. soooo much stuff. all these cages and exo-terras and tanks that if one got away... it would be toast. a house spider would eat it and that would be the end of it and i don't want that.
but they sure are gorgeous to look at!!!! i do looooove doing that!

I had a similar fun experience with a 5" P. murinus a couple weeks ago. Transferring my female to a larger enclosure, she decided to run up the tongs I was using to tease her out of her hide. She bolted up my arm and run under my shirt sleeve. So, trying to remain very calm, I grab a deli cup and try to carefully get her out from under the sleeve. She runs out of that sleeve, across my shoulders, down my other arm, then makes a U-turn and back under my other sleeve. They are SO FAST!!! I finally got her to calm down and she slowly strolled out, and walked down my arm a foot or so and into the deli cup. I had a few spectators the whole time, including my wife, and they all thought I was nuts. I really helps to remain calm during episodes like that, but man did I want to scream :O . I never realized how arboreal these guys could be given half a chance.

Re: two new pokies! DUW
hey OBTs are semi aboreal!
hahahaha i would have freaked out soooo bad if that happened to me. did you get bit? it sounds like you didn't.
i'm quite sure my heart would have stopped during that... although what most people won't realize is... the OBT racing back and forth probably took about 3 seconds?
-
Re: two new pokies! DUW
No bites here! I've never been bitten by a T before, though I've handled quite a few (some inadvertantly  ) Yeah, I was proud of how calm I was during the whole thing, but you're right, it only took about 8 seconds including the stops under my shirt sleeves. So where did you get your Ts from Aleesha?

I've often heard the word "teleport" used with OBT's!:)

Re: two new pokies! DUW
i got some of my Ts from tarantula canada... didn't like them though (just my own thing) - i got some from a woman i met online at a T forum who lives close to me (my last two were from her) - a few are from a petstore (Hidden Reef in Abbotsford BC Canada 604-856-1433) and the rest are from David Avery. I looooove David Avery! his Ts rock, he gives me free stuff AND all of his service is with a smile!!!!

Re: two new pokies! DUW
I've had a close call or two with a pink toe. It stays on the glass most the time (instead of the branches i have in there for it, go figure) so when i have to clean the glass or get in the tank for whatever reason, i put a deli cup over it where it is on the glass so i can do what i need to do. The other day i needed to take it out and do a good cleaning, so i cupped it, then slide a piece of cardboard under the cup and took it out. When it came time to put it back in, i moved the cardboard, and it started walking around to the outside of the deli cup, at which point i dropped the cup in the tank and pulled the lid on, all in about a half second i think :P. Needless to say the couple people watching got a kick out of it.
