    Lock Up!
We put our male, LaVey, in with our loaner female to see what'd happen.. she just shed and is a big girl at 1850g. Got a lockup! That's my boy. :) We didn't do a quarantine in-house because Mark's brother has had her for years and she's healthy.

Yup. The female can reabsorb the eggs or throw slugs (infertile eggs).

    Best of luck Jen!

Actually, it's the follicles that can be reabsorbed, not the eggs ... once a female ovulates, they're coming out.

But even before all that, the bigger challenge is getting the female to ovulate in the first place ... timing the breedings with the right point of follicular development is what makes the difference between a "breeder" and someone just putting two snakes together. ;)

    adam,

so how do you know when she's ovulating? is like people.. you see her plotting to kill her husband/kids, eating chocolate in the corner and hording the remote control?

seriously though... how do you know?

It's not like people at all ... females ovulate (hopefully) AFTER they are fully of sperm ... so you don't have to time the precise ovulation, just create the conditions that induce the development of follicles in the female and eventually cause the female to ovulate ... the copulation is the easy part for the most part.

FWIW, ovulation can't be missed ... females swell to several times their normal size ... kinda like they swallowed a football ... and it last for 12-24 hours.

    Re: Lock Up!
oh okay so you have to introduce the male and female first, then she ovulates and then hopefully, some eggs.

    thanks adam!

    Re: Lock Up!
I am definately familiar with ovulation; Ginger felt like she was full of air when she ovulated last year. Then the eggs came a day or so afterward.
I have been watching thie girl at Mike's house; she is definately in super condition and healthy. I plan on being a breeder, not just a snake-putter-together. :) I didn't go the cooling route because, I have read about a lot of people who skip it (Joepythons being one I can think of right now.)
My pastel male is not ready in my eyes yet; I am letting him grow a few months on before introducing him to my girls. If he still doesn't get the job done, LaVey will go in with them.
I might be a mere fledgling breeder at this point, but I am definately not just an ignoramus.

after ovulation, the female will go into a shed. usually around 2 weeks give or take. this shed is important to note. generally about 30 days after this shed you can expect eggs!

    here is a ovulation pic,

Could anyone explain why they swell up like that during ovulation... what's happening physiologically?

The females mid body swells to allow the ovum (which are 30 millimeters or more each in diameter at that point) to pass through the infundibulum and down the oviduct. (This is also the point where fertilization takes place ... or not) ... The swelling helps to facilitate the movement of the ovum.

I knew you'd come through Adam... thanks! Now I have to practice saying "infundibulum" 10 times fast. :)

BTW, I just found a very good link describing the entire process.

They have seperated and are at opposite ends of the tub.. I plan on putting the male back into his tub and going from there.
