woah...help!
okay, so i was on a walk with my dog today, and i saw this little snake, cutest thing i have ever sceen, and ovcourse, being me, i picket it up, and brought it home. It is a little black snake with a light orange belly that fades into a dark orange belly. It has a little colored ring around its neck too. Can you help me out on what it is? Should i keep it? if i do, what do i feed it? it is sooo tiny!!!
Thanks all!

Re: woah...help!
sound like a ringneck snake.

Re: woah...help!
does it look like the ones on this site?
I would just let that one go, you can get captive bred ones cheap. Check your local laws though, here its illegal to own anything that is native.

Re: woah...help!
Ringneck snakes are adorable.. I hear they can be difficult to keep for long periods of time in captivity.

Re: woah...help!

Re: woah...help!

Re: woah...help!
okay. so i am about to pick it up to put it into another cage. is this thing going to hurt me? lol. i dont mind being bitten, but not if it is venomous

Re: woah...help!
Read the last paragraph of this article to answer your question (in short, no it won't hurt you if it bites you unless you are allergic and your snake is very talented at biting)

Don't forget to consult your state laws on keeping native wildlife in your home without a license.

Re: woah...help!
k. thanks all. I know that i am alloud to keep it because we had one in a classroom as a school pet in 6th grade...
I do realize now that it wont hurt me....i was too impatient for the reply, but i did see a picture of a man being bitten by the snake, so i figured it was fine. lol. He didnt bite me, he did give off a strong odor though (which the article also said)...anybody know how i should take care of it? i have it in a tub with substrate and a hideunder.

Re: woah...help!
I would feed it a fuzzey mouse it may be looking for food

Re: woah...help!
Dont assume because you had one in class that it is legal. Many people dont realize there are laws against things like that and may not have checked. Play it safe and look it up.

Re: woah...help!
Just my opinion but why take a snake that you didn't properly identify first, therefore know nothing about caring for, that was probably perfectly happy going about it's business living wild and stick it in a cage?

Re: woah...help!
lol. its just an animal thing....i always feel i have to take care of all of them. haha.
I'll check on the wildlife thing...keeping animals in the class room is pretty strict around here, you have to check it through the principle, and i think that there would have been a problem, scince he knows about it, and the rules...buttt just to be sure, ill double check.

Re: woah...help!
Man, if you took home and mothered every reptile you saw living in Florida, you would have a pretty full house! I used to see 100s of lizards and frogs and sometimes a few snakes on any given day!

Re: woah...help!
haha. yeah. there are a TON of lizards. i have only sceen a few snakes, 1 of them was when i was at school, and all of the others i have been on horseback. I know that there are some cool snakes in my backyard, i find their sheds all the time, usually near the heater box thinggy outside my house. Other than that, i havnt sceen any other cool reptiles.
edit- i have sceen a bunch of awesome tree frogs and such, but i dont know how to take care of them or lizards....
