Congratulations, New Jerseyians!
You've joined Massachusetts and Canada in legalizing gay marriage today. What a great step forward :)

Good. Having gay friends, and having gone through a period of identity-searching myself, I support it.
I can see this thread becoming ugly fast though, lol.

I sure hope you are wrong! We really hate having to cope with folks flying off the handle and posting without thinking!

Re: Congratulations, New Jerseyians!
I know; I hope that if this does turn into a debate, we can all keep it civil and respect e/others opinions.

Re: Congratulations, New Jerseyians!
I am holding a lot of my thoughts to myself right now.. but I do feel an all-out rant just dying to escape.. I will hold it in for as long as possible, heh.
For the life of me, I can't see why any adult person, who chooses to spend their life with another consenting adult in a happy manner, is said to be wrong for it..

Sweet; one more step in the direction of a world without discrimination, judgementality and small-minded prejudice.

If you're offended, why even bother opening the thread much less replying to it?

I tend to "investigate" most, if not all, threads in this forum community. The title of this thread does not represent the topic which has been brought up.

That can be a two way street. You may damage some peoples emotions by posting in a negative manner in the thread as well. The best thing would be to turn the other cheek and not say anything if you have nothing nice to say at all.
On a personal note: Good job NJ! I knew I liked you guys for more than just giving me my Avatar!

I opened the thread and stated my opinion. I live in Canada, where gay marriage has been legal for over a year. Marriages, the economy, nor the country are falling apart as a result. I think it's great that we've allowed people to show everyone that they have made a commitment to each other in a legal sense, recognized by our government, and these freedoms should have come sooner. This is my opinion, yours is that you disagree with it.
You're welcome to say why you disagree, but I don't appreciate you judging this thread as useless. I see it as good and welcome news. If people don't come to this subforum for general discussion, a mod is welcome to close this.

Re: Congratulations, New Jerseyians!
I have a gay family member and like the majority of the American people am against gay marriage. With that said I have no problem with civil union's and all the goodie's they want to share just like hetero couples insurance benefit's etc. One more thing I hope my opinion does not get anyone angry it's just the way I feel about this divisive issue.
-
Re: Congratulations, New Jerseyians!
The gay marriage law is just wrong. but I am a strong believer in live and let live. and I would never ostracise someone because of their sexual preference.
Canada should pass a law against the men that come to the jersey shore and wear those little tight stretchy swim shorts. its just wrong. :O
-
Re: Congratulations, New Jerseyians!
I see nothing wrong with it. After all I myself am a lesbian trapped in a man's body.
Man first Jim McGreevy now this. time to move out of jersey.

No Nancy you are certainly not alone. For a country that is supposed to keep state and church seperate there's sure a lot of "church" in this. This is in reality a matter of simply legalizing a union between consenting adults so that the rights any couple enjoys to medical decisions, benefits, rights of inheritance, etc. are protected under law. This is also about respect for other adults and not standing in judgement or deciding your relationship is more "valid" than theirs.
As some of you know, my oldest daughter is gay and in a happy, committed relationship. Both as a mother and a woman I could not be happier for her. As a parent I've always wanted for my children to find happiness and security in a loving adult relationship when the time comes. I will not judge or stand quiet while someone else judges that relationship purely based on the genders involved. For me that's such a small part of a lifelong relationship and almost silly to make judgements based on what someone carries in their blue jeans. As a woman, I am proud that I raised a daughter who was not taught to be ashamed or allow society to set her course in life. I want to see my daughter and her partner allowed under law to have a civil marriage. They deserve this just like any other young couple making life decisions about marriage and the future.
I understand this is not a comfortable thing for some people but ask you simply to respect that you really don't have a right to harshly judge another adult like this.

Good for you; I hope that it goes good and you can one day celebrate that!

Re: Congratulations, New Jerseyians!
Perhaps I'm more sensitive to prejudices since I am myself involved in an 11 year inter-racial relationship, but my thoughts are - why does ANYONE care if two consenting adults wish to get married? I don't care what your religion is, it's not up to ANY of us to be the moral compass for anyone else.
You don't have to approve of it, but why does it matter to anyone if Bob and Jim, or Sue and Jane get married? Do they live with you? I guess I don't understand why people get so worked up about it. Judge not, lest ye be judged!
-
Re: Congratulations, New Jerseyians!
I live in Jersey also. Finally this state did something good.
I don't understand the big deal with gay marriage. It should be legal everywhere.
I also don't understand why people get so worked up to fight against it?..When it really has no effect on them...who are they to tell people who they can/can't marry?

I've never seen an argument against gay marriage that was not somehow based on religion. I don't expect absolutely everyone to agree with it - just that they accept that it is there, and let it be.

Re: Congratulations, New Jerseyians!
I am a right wing religious (jewish) fanatic. But that said, I only judge and temper my own actions by my fanaticism. I often "preach" to my wife and children; however I would by no means openly criticize anyone's decision to join in a "religiously prohibited" relationship.
I think that we all should reflect on the well written words of frankykeno.

Thank you Akiva, that's awfully kind of you to say dear. I myself would not support my own daughter insisting any religion accept her relationship if it is against their tenants and practises - she understands that's not a likely option nor something she can shove into anyone's face. I just wish that she enjoy the same rights, responsibilities and respect any other adult has under the law. Religious folk like you Akiva, that are able to live their religion without using it to punish or look down upon another, are the best expression of their personal service to a higher being in my opinion. :)

Re: Congratulations, New Jerseyians!
When you get married...arnt most of the people marrying you preachers? Christain preachers? Like i stated above about our christian heratige, it is a sin to be gay. Is that a reason that gay marrege is illegal in some states?
-
Re: Congratulations, New Jerseyians!
Anyone of any religion can be married legally by a Justice of the Peace. (someone correst me if I am wrong.)
-
Re: Congratulations, New Jerseyians!
Jen, you aren't wrong! And there are also non-religious ordained ministers, which is what my husband and I were married by. We're atheists, and our marriage is just as valid as anyone else's.
I would love it if the US had true seperation. As it is right now, neither the Constitution nor the Bill of Rights has any bearing on how the country is actually run.
-
Re: Congratulations, New Jerseyians!
GOOOOO NJ!!!!!!
I have a few gay friends and well for them the law sucks!
I hope MD passes it someday....

That's a symbolic marriage. Married by a preacher or not you still have to get a marriage license, given by a justice of the peace or other official. I don't intend to get married in a church!
America and Canada have a Christian heritage, which I repsect, but it's time to realise that America and Canada are not based on Christianity; church and state are seperate, and truly should be (but aren't in many cases). The reason it's still illegal in 48 states is that people are voting with a religious conviction, instead of considering what it means to the country.
I'm not saying that you shouldn't live by your religion, I mean people who don't really consider what gay marriage means to them and just go along with anything anyone religious says.

Re: Congratulations, New Jerseyians!
Mousch, dont you think that it would be a good idea to let this thread die out?
This is a subject that could get us all fighting back and forth with one another.
And I also think that it is a slap in the face to most new jerseyians, congratulations are not in order here. show a little respect to the 90% that do not agree with you. just let this thread drop.
We do not need to be arguing amongst ourselves like those MKR threads make us do everytime they pop up. :)

No jamie, I speak for myself only. ;)
The gay population is estimated at 10%. thats were I get the 90% figure. :)
I have seen so much divisiveness on other sites, dont want to see it here. I look at this site as my sanctuary and a friendly place. :)

Thats cool. Although even if your stats are right, that doesn't mean 90% disagree with the decision. :)
Bp.net is my happy place as well...

The majority of New Jersey residents are in favour of the decision.
I understand it's a divisive issue, but it made me really happy so I wanted to congratulate anyone positively affected by the law. I can understand disagreeing with it, but there are a lot of things that I disagree with but I accept as part of my life.
My boyfriend used to think we should "ship them all out to sea and nuke them" and now has no problem with it, so I'm just an optimist.
