This made me so mad!
I was at a local pet store to get a pair of rats so I can breed them. As I past the herp section I saw a red tail boa and a ball python,in the same cage! That was the worst thing I seen I've ever seen at that pet store. Has anybody encountered any thing like this?

A pet shop close to me that is "supossed" to be one of the best from what other people have told me have a 30 gallon tank with 2 bigger balls, 1 redtail, and one burm. I wont even get started on the other things they do or any of the other pet shops around here.

Just because you are young doesn't mean you don't know what you are talking about! If you want "back up" print out info from the computer and show them.

All the time. I never say anything, though. I have the diplomacy skills of a gun-toting Cheney at a Vegan festival.

On a side note, I just stopped by the local pet-o-rama in mansfield and was surprised at well everything was cared for. They had a staff member on site who was solely in charge of herps. While talking to him for 30 minutes, he was applying balm to a tortosie shell, separating out larger bearded dragons, ensuring cages were clean. He said he handles the retic. python daily to ensure it was use to people. He was in charge of the inventrory and made sure they had a variety of animals. He even owned several snakes himself. So the point of all this is.....not all pet stores are bad.:sunny:

Thank you alot for that reply. Next time I go there I will show them something about housing 2 snakes together without breeding them.

Re: This made me so mad!
Just dropped into a small private pet store the other day. 2 baby ball pythons, 4 corn snakes and another snake I couldn't identify....all in a 15 gallon tank...arrrgh! Oh and another tank with three larger BP's stuffed in it. When I asked to see the largest one the guy gave me this "girls don't like snakes and will scream" attitude. I just smiled sweetly, turned to my 5 year old son and said "let's go home dear, you have your own snake to feed and momma has more snakes to feed than this store has on display".
I won't be back there...blech!

Re: This made me so mad!
At my local petshop they have Albino burms, normal burms, columbian RTBs and baby ball pythons all in the same cage... it's horrible!

"Everybody knows, that the world is full of stupid people.."
That line came to mind reading this thread; meaning, the pet store people who do these things. I woldn't even shop there; I and my man would say a few choice words to them and leave.. happened a few times now.

Mike and I do that too Jen (it's made us less than "preferred customers" at some stores LOL). We also make sure to not spend any money on supplies, feeders, whatever at those kinds of places. If they can't be bothered to learn even the simplest husbandry for their live stock, they don't deserve to make a cent off us for bedding, etc. is my thought.

I agree with you but if I become a "less preferred" customer I will have no where to go to get bedding and food for rats because all the other pet stores are far away or I ticked them off because I feed live.

Re: This made me so mad!
Not all pet stores are horrible. I work in a rather nice one =] The most we ever have in the same tank is two, and that is when they are the same breed and age. Usually balls. Right now, we have two balls, a reticulated, a rainbow boa, and a king snake. All of them get handled frequently.
Our pet store also hires based on a person's knowledge. Two of the people who I work with are excellent when it comes to dogs. One is excellent with fish. One with cats. One with rodents. One with birds. One with reptiles. And everone knows a little about everything and learns from the others.
Don't be afraid to speak up. I know everyone at my store is willing to listen to people, especially if they have back-up proof.

Re: This made me so mad!
Very true, not all pet stores are bad. What is bad is the fact that most states don't have humane laws that cover pet store "stock" like snakes, lizards, fish, rodents, etc. Most laws, at least in the U.S., about proper housing, etc. only pertain to kittens and puppies but that is slowly changing hopefully.
