Black Ratsnakes in the wild. my basement.
I was field herping this morming in my basement, dont laught. I live in an old farm house with woods all around me and you never know what will crawl out of the woods. the snakes that I have seen are Black rats, black racers, kingsnakes, hognose and pine snakes. fence swifts and blue tail skinks are also numerious. I keep my rodents in the basement and have a couple wild black ratsnakes that live there. they are not afraid of me because I feed them a couple of small rats whenever I see them and they are quite tame, but wild snakes. heres a couple pics.of the small male.hes about 32" long. :)

Yes, no worries about being over run by rodents in the house.these guys do their job. :)

Re: Black Ratsnakes in the wild. my basement.
That's awesome! If I lived in an old house in the country, I'd definitely encourage a wild (non-venomous) snake or two to take up residence!

Re: Black Ratsnakes in the wild. my basement.
Thats cool  .Well it shows that the snakes are not stupid, they get free room and board plus meals :D .

Re: Black Ratsnakes in the wild. my basement.
That is so funny!! When you start feeding them f/t we'll know you have officially lost it!

Re: Black Ratsnakes in the wild. my basement.
Did you post about these guys when you first saw them? i remember a earlier thread about a couple of black rats in someones basement, and i was just wondering if it's two seperate cases, or just an update of sorts.

Perfect house pets. My first snake ever was a wild black rat snake.:) Great snakes!

Wow, that's awesome! We live in an old farmhouse also; lots of wild garters around, though we really don't see them that much except in the garden. But there was a whopper of a big female here last year; largest one I ever saw, she had to top 3'. I guess they must live inside the walls of this house or something; you can find their shed skins up in the attic crawl space.
I wish I could see your pics Ed; I think I jumped on this thread too late though.

These black rats live in my basement and they are completely wild snakes, but will eat rat pups almost out of my hands. :) http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n...g?t=1164489720

Re: Black Ratsnakes in the wild. my basement.
Thats pretty cool....there's a place around here that I mountain bike through and always see what I've been calling "black racers" that look indentical to those pictured above.
They are a little nippy but certainly handleable if you know what you're doing...

ok, I see them now. That's pretty cool that they are as tame to almost eat the food out of your hands. I'm sure with them being wild they appreciate the food offered to them...

Yeah, alot of black racers in Florida...Their fast as $hit too! lol...
I use to catch them when I was a kid. One of my neighbors growing up was breeding birds and we had all kinds of 'em around the area due to the rats and mice eating the bird seed and such in her backyard...

Re: Black Ratsnakes in the wild. my basement.
The difference is that racers have black bellies and rats have white bellies. :)

Actually...I've read a few articles about how racers actually prefer birds to rodents...hopefully your neighbor didn't lose any stock!

Yeah, that was like 10 years ago...I don't know though, I wouldn't doubt it if she had lossed a bird or two.

All of the black racers I've seen had grey belly's...Maybe that has to do with the difference in geographic location or something but...they were clearly racers.

Must be spring as the black ratsnakes are starting to come out of hibernation, this yearling is the first one I'v seen this year. look closely at the front third of the body and you can see the juvenile pattern. these live in my basement and are doing real well. :) http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n...g?t=1173653393
