    Lock Pins
On the rack I got from HerpEnclosures, it came with some lock pins to keep the tubs secured inside the rack....

Do they really serve that much of a purpose? How in the world could a snake scoot its tub out of the rack enclosure???

Nate, even though i do not own a rack like this one, there must be a reason they included the pins ;) .Never underestimate a snake :P .

nate, some people keep hots in racks. and some use the pins like markers, i.e. to mark a tub, like if they ate already or not.

it seems to me that they are not to keep the snake in but to keep someone out???? like ivylea77 mentioned.

Well, I once had a snake escape (from a rubbermaid) and open up several tubs on my hatchling rack.. wish I had those little pins then!

They are there to ensure the tub is slid all the way back in.

You have no idea how many times I have come home to see the tubs slid out to the end of the shelf because someone was playing with the snakes.

Morphs, kids, and tubs not slid all the way back in. Enough to give you a stroke when you come home.

The pins sound like a great idea.

Reptile Basics racks also use locking pins.

edit: And wow! That's about actual size of my pins.:P

there's a little hole in front of each tub where you insert this little pin. I'm sure someone will get a picture for you....i'm at school so i can't :(

I am just wondering if this is something I should add to the rack we're planning; we don't have kids but sometimes friends/family bring rugrats over; I want to avert catastrophe, lol.

    Re: Lock Pins
There's a small hole drilled in the front of each tub on the shelf they sit on.. the peg of the pin fits into the hole, thus preventing it from sliding out while the pin is in place.

For home made racks, a a simple bolt can be used as a locking pin, and if you want to go one step further and put locks on the pins so they can't be removed, you can drill a hole in the shaft of the bolt and use a luggage lock like you would see on a suitcase, I personally dont use them, but Ive seen this done before..

we are thinking of adding a piece of wood to the top of each shelve... the width of the shelve so it blends in when it's not turned vertically. as long as it's a tight fit... so it'll hold it's position when turned... that should work.

    yes... no?

If it'd keep your tubs locked in, and not be a pain in the butt, I say why not? Esp. if you have rugrats running around your house; I shudder to think of a kid opening up a cage, then everyone leaves.. come home and find no snake.. scary.

    Re: Lock Pins
well we can always choose not to use it by having it blend in but that way we don't have to worry about a snake managing to figure out how to move it's box to the edge.

fortunately our boxes will not have handles so they are flat sided. but... we do have kittens and kids and the snakes are in my bedroom... so having them secure would make me a happy girl. (my tarantulas are next to the snakes... so i don't want the snakes escaping and knocking over my tarantulas... that would NOT be a good thing!)

Yikes! I wouldn't be able to leave the house, worrying about that scenario! I am already horrible w/ the "did I leave the teakettle on?" type stuff, hehe.

Would you also put locks in the back, to prevent anyone accessing them that way? I am still debating on locks myself.

I have heard that a loose snake can work its way back behind other tubs and manage to open additional tubs. Then you have a prison break! I have a 6 year old, so he has learned to place the pins in everytime, thus ensuring the tub is properly closed!
