Paypal question for you paypal fans
I've decided to break down and try paypal again. I loathe it since they still have 500 dollars of mine locked up for no reason but there are some critters available that I can only get by paying through paypal sooooo....

I've recently moved and am setting up my new bank account and I'll be setting up a paypal account with a secondary savings account. However, out of curiosity can you pay with a debit card through paypal without an account like you would with a credit card?
I hope that makes sense. And if it does I hope it's not a completely idiotic question. :)

    Thanks

Dont need the debit, link your checking acct. to your paypal and they can take it directly from there. real easy.

Yes, however I'm in the process of switching banks and don't have a checking account at the moment. I remember how to set up the account, I was just curious about the debit thing. Thanks for replying Ed. :)

Maybe I've just heard too many Paypal horror stories, or had too many bad experiences with my personal bank account being gotten into but I refuse to use Paypal or my personal credit card/checking account for online purchases. I have a pre-paid MC that is the only one I will use online (it only ever has the exact funds needed for a specific purchase at that time...nothing extra to be gotten into). I use Western Union money orders for everything else that can't be taken care of with the credit card. It's a bit less efficient but I sleep better at night.

Every other conflict on the BOI involves paypal it seems. Paypal freezing accounts, paypal not helping because it's past some 45 day cut-off, etc. Sorry but I dislike information and access to my family's bank account being in anyone's hands online. Perhaps when I set up a seperate business account I might be more comfortable but I've had online transactions messed up before so I keep everything strictly seperate now.

Mark and I use Paypal on a weekly basis; he gets funds transferred through his landlords for his property management business. It's instant but you do have to wait for the funds to clear sometimes. I use it for all of my ebay selling and buying; the reason being, it acts as a "go-between" so that I do not have to give sellers my checking or debit-card number info.

paypal is horrible... i work for a fortune 500 bank and let me tell you, no bank would ever get away with the stuff they get away with! darn user agreements. besides, with how ridiculous their fees are you'd think their customer service would be TOP notch.

just thought i'd give my two cents. i'd much rather pay for an m/o or wait for a personal check to clear than use paypal after some of the experiences i've had and heard about.

I only use it with trustworthy sellers on ebay; if their feedback is less than 99%, I don't bid. Most of my dealings though are with me selling things on ebay.
We had one incident where a car part we ordered/paid for, was damaged. The company was not answering our calls or emails.. so since we had used the Paypal credit card, we put it through as CC fraud; we not only got a refund from the CC company, but eventually the car parts site!
Paypal itself is just a generic go-between; not liable for buyers/sellers' actions, I guess. I despise using checks, unless it's for a charge-card bill or something; I just can't stand to wait for them to clear.

I hate paypal as well believe me. But so many people are insisting on it now a days. I mean, I understand the desire to have the money instantly and it does prevent things getting lost in the mail (I've been a victim of this quite a few times). Thus, I'm opening a secondary savings account to use it with. I haven't yet put my debit on there but I'm still considering it.

If anyone is bored there is www.paypalsucks.com which has plenty of horror stories about both paypal and ebay. Some of it is quite amusing and some of it is quite believable.
And a heads up, there are people on those boards quite proud of the fact that if they use paypal and the seller doesn't put some sort of confirmation on the item they ship, they claim to have not recived it and file a complain through paypal. And if anyone of you has ever had a complaint issued through paypal you know they ask for proof of shipping, a plain receipt doesn't count...

Yes, I loathe paypal but it seems to be becoming a necessary evil until they screw enough people that they knock themselves out of business.
