    Loo-Kistic or Loo-Systic?
How do you pronounce Leucistic? I always thought it was with a 'K' sound, but I was watching the tube last night and Mr. Irwin pronounced it with an 'S' sound.

I agree that I've probably been saying it wrong all this time, but I thought I'd throw a poll out there to see how many other phonetically challenged people are around. ;)

S sound but then I mispronounced boid (as in boidae) for ages until Kara explained it's said "bo-id" not "boyd".

I'm always mispronouncing words... I swear, if I ever participated in a spelling bee I'd be riding there on a short bus. :nerd:

BTW, how many people pronounce URL like 'Earl" (as I do) instead of "You Are El"?

loo-systic. I think leucistic is based on the word leucitic.

I pronounce it "you are el" or "yoo-ruhl", as in the Ural Mountains...but then I'm a geography dork...

True, but what about Jean Luc Picard? Hmm...

There are actually a LOT of "leuc" words that use the K sound instead of "S". The origin is from the Greek word "Leukos" meaning "white", so I guess the K pronunciation would probably be more correct... especially if it was spelled with a K. :P

Damn... I really do have too much time on my hands. :(

I pronounce it "boyd" and don't plan on changing it :). Simply because the acronym uses the first 4 letters of the word, doesn't mean you are required to use it in context...

Think modem (it's MODULATOR/DEMODULATOR but we pronounce it as MOE) or NASA (We don't pronounce it NESA). Laziness is the American Way (TM) so I will continue to promote that to the best of my ability.

I've always pronounced it with a "k" too. But I too am always mispronouncing words. I learn so much from books and the internet and other text sources that I rarely hear things spoken until after I make reference to them outloud to somebody who knows better.

i must admit that i dont know how to pronounce half the science related things i know a lot about. the fact is, i've been self-taught on everything and most of the stuff i read doesnt exactly have the little dictionary style pronunciation cues.
its never a problem until i go to a herp show or something like that and sound like an idiot when i'm trying to talk herps with people.
    any way around this?

    Re: Loo-Kistic or Loo-Systic?
Pronunciation has alot to do with where you have grown up and how those around you pronounce certain things....

    http://www.uta.fi/FAST/US1/P1/RSV/jokela.html
    http://www.ling.upenn.edu/phono_atlas/ICSLP4.html

soda, pop, cola, soda pop...they are all basically the same thing, however, depending on what part of the US you come from, you will not be using the same word as another in another part of the US to describe that refreshing carbonated cold drink...

you all, y'all.... same thing, different ways of saying it... also depends on what part of the US you come from....

then, there are those words, that sound alike, but are not spelled alike, nor have the same meaning...
    thier, there
    hair, hare
    bare, bear
    pear, pair

oh, got to love those spelled alike, but have different meanings...
tears.. as in crying type tears
tears.. tears a muscle (meniscal tear- One of the most commonly injured parts of the knee)

Oh yes, our launguage (english) is pretty confusing in its own right... no wonder it is the hardest language to master, especially if you did not grow up speaking it....

OH yeah--- loo-syst-ic..... thats how I pronounce that!

Well, up here in the northwest we say "fer" as opposed to "for", to the utter amusement of out of towners.

Of course, a "boid" in New York has wings and is fully capable of flying :).
