Which one should I get? (DUW)
so i'm buying a green tree python, but now i just cant decide which one to get. all of them are very healthy, eaten at least 3 times, have shed at least 2 or 3 times and around 20 inches in length. now its just a matter of choosing which one looks best,
so help guys and gals!
i've included 2 pictures of each..just for fun. :)
thanks.

Re: Which one should I get? (DUW)
Nice looking options you have there!
If you could edit your post to put line breaks between all the pictures, it would make reading the thread a LOT easier! Thanks!
EDIT: Apparently you logged off, so I took care of it for ya. And personally, I like #4...love that pattern!

Re: Which one should I get? (DUW)
i like #1 cause it looks like it has drips coming off the eye stripes... and i'm crazy about eye stripes! :D
-
Re: Which one should I get? (DUW)
I voted for Number 3. I'm partial to the maroon babies.
If I had to pick a yellow one, it'd be 1. 1 has a really nice pattern.
-
Re: Which one should I get? (DUW)
I voted #4...I'd have to go with her, she's got wonderful dorsal striping which should make her a stellar adult!
-
Re: Which one should I get? (DUW)
#4 is very nice looking, but I would question any seller who is offering sexed hatchling GTPs... They really shouldn't be sexed until they are at least a year old.
Just letting you know to watch out and question everything.
-
Re: Which one should I get? (DUW)
3 and 4 are awsome but i would go with three, that red is killer!!

Why is that?? Just curious...I know NOTHING about GTP's...

Re: Which one should I get? (DUW)
Because sexing requires restraint, and restraint of any kind on a hatchling GTP will cause spinal damage, kinks and other problems such as nerve damage. They are incredibly fragile as babies and shouldn't be handled unless they are on a perch with you holding the perch. Even pulling their tail off of said perch can cause some damage. Sexing the Green Tree requires either probing, popping or the "breeder" lying about the actual sex of the snake. Probing them requires that you restrain them, meaning you have to hold their back end steady with them twisting and coiling, causing unnecessary stress. Popping requires you to press on a very tiny area(in a GTP's case anyway), and that tiny area has very delicate vertebrae that can be hurt by the one doing the popping.
And then there's the lying, but I wouldn't buy from that breeder anyway. :)
Go email Bob Clark and see if he has any yearling male GTPs. A friend of mine just got a 2 year old male GTP from him, and he is very calm, easy to handle(in the daytime, LoL), and of good size and weight. I would rather buy a healthy,well-established older snake from a very reputable breeder, than a "sexed" hatchling from someone else. Cheaper is not always better.

Re: Which one should I get? (DUW)
I'll back up satanicinfection 100% I got my arboreal (ATB) from a really good guy and he to explained to me the dangers of sexing such small arboreal species since they are VERY frail especially around the vent area to the end of tail. GTP's are awesome but out of my budget, I wish they kept their bright colors they are gorgeous! I like the maroon also.

All GTP's go through a color change as they progress to adulthood. There are a very few expensive lines which will retain yellow, and some $$$$ that will turn blue (and there are some that are partially black, calico, some albino's), but the majority of GTP's, turn green :P
A typical GTP will end up looking something like this

Have you even researched these snakes at all before deciding to purchase one?
-
Re: Which one should I get? (DUW)
I voted for snake 3 that is sweet:cool: .Let us know what one you actually get.

yes, i have. i've done a lot of reading about caring, feeding, husbandry, etc. read what background info i could find. i'm not running into this at a spur of the moment decision; but i hadn't read anywhere that "most gtp will lose they're color and turn green." i had read that they changed color, but i assumed they changed really young into these bright vibrant colors not from bright vibrant colors to a green.
the first three snakes are from one owner, the other is from a different breeder. i asked them both about the sexing and i've gotten a response from the first one and here is what she says to my "how do you know they're sex if you're not supposed to probe them" question:
"you are absolutely right. That is why no probe was done and sexing is not guaranteed. I have an associate who has had snakes for many, many years and he gently took a look and gave his best educated guess. Using a probe and sexing a snake can damage and kink their tails. All the gtp’s are babies. I cannot guarantee sex at all, as a preliminary and gentle visual check was used."
so that makes me feel better. i havent heard from the other guy.

Re: Which one should I get? (DUW)
Wow- I consider you lucky to own any one of those beautiful babies :) I too am very drawn to those maroon babies though
-
Re: Which one should I get? (DUW)
maroon got my vote. since you wont know which ones will stay that color and which ones will get green as they get older, get the one that looks best now.
-
Re: Which one should I get? (DUW)
None of them will stay those colors, unless of course the yellows are from "Canary" Green Tree Pythons...but more than likely they will all turn varying shades of green...possibly hints of blue...hard to say honestly because they're mixing the localities.
Do a bit more research before you make your final decision.;)

Which is highly unlikely, unless you're spending more than a thousand on one.
-
Re: Which one should I get? (DUW)
personally i'd only want one that is not an intergrade... but that's just me. so i guess the last one gets my vote.
just be sure you're ready to properly care for a baby GTP. after hearing some discussion about feeding and caring for baby GTP's in chicago last weekend i'd really hesitate to buy one that's not at least a yearling.

hence the name "green tree python"

Re: Which one should I get? (DUW)
as previously said, why the mixing? a pure locale gtp will be worth more than an integrade. also if you had high hopes for a tame gtp biak localty is not the way to go. its tough to vote as gtps completely change their appearance but i voted for number 4 as i like pure localties :)
-
Re: Which one should I get? (DUW)
i would take some "intergrades" over any local pure gtp.
i.e. calicos, dream line lemons, aquaman blues:D

Re: Which one should I get? (DUW)
You can not deny the beauty of a red neonate!
-
Re: Which one should I get? (DUW)
I'd definently go with #4. That's one beautiful snake! Besides, my daughter's favorite color is yellow so she voted for me also. I'm partial to the the Burmese and ball pythons myself. As for venomous either of the mambas are my favorites. Good luck with which ever you choose, they're all gorgeous snakes.

Re: Which one should I get? (DUW)
I had to go with number 1 I just love the pattern on his face soo coool
-
Re: Which one should I get? (DUW)
Can't go wrong with anyone of those.................but i voted #1 :D
-
Re: Which one should I get? (DUW)
I would get #1 and #3...why not ya know, you only live once :)
-
Re: Which one should I get? (DUW)
the only sad thing about gtp's is most of them end up just plain green. even the red and yellow babies.
-
Re: Which one should I get? (DUW)
Hi
i go for the 3 snake why..Because i like the combo and the color :D

I know your post wasn't written in a negative context. But to have something change from deep maroon to green is absoutly awesome. Green is my favorite color though, lol. I voted for #3.
-
Re: Which one should I get? (DUW)
you are right it was not ment negative at all. i wish you the best of luck in what ever you chose. i love gtp's and just wish they kepth the babie pattern. best of luck. if you need any help with anything just ask i know a few people that breed them.
-
Re: Which one should I get? (DUW)
if it were i deciding which one to pick then would go with number 3 , i just love maroon babies :D
but honestly there all gorgeus
-
Re: Which one should I get? (DUW)
sheesh people, give number two some love! pretty lil thing.
Good luck!
-
Re: Which one should I get? (DUW)
I voted 4 bcause it looked the coolest to me, but they are all awesome don't now how you could go wrong.
-
Re: Which one should I get? (DUW)

Re: Which one should I get? (DUW)
I would definately get # 3 and #4 so you can breed them in a few years. ;) I would be cautious of the breeders who sexed them that young though. Kinks can take months to show, so you would never know if there were any problems until the breeder had your money. Or, you could just buy my established male Biak, sexed at 14 months and guarantied eating f/t like a pro ;)
-
Re: Which one should I get? (DUW)
Oh, but if you only get 1, get the female. males are readily available if you ever want to breed, females take longer to get to breeding size, and females are always in high demand (and expensive) if you ever need to sell it. Maroons are cool though.
-
Re: Which one should I get? (DUW)
wow, this thread is really old I'm surprised it resurfaced. with that said it worries me that the original poster knew nothing about the ontogenic color changes of yearlings. that said, I'd go with 3, because even though I like pure locales better(even though most locales for gtp's are fuzzy at best) the red babies are believed to be the ones that will have the wilder colors at maturity, breeders will be more likely to hold back reds because it's likely they'll be the ones to be most colorful. At least that's the thought. Also I'm partial to biaks because of their yellow speckling.

Re: Which one should I get? (DUW)
Snake #3! Although snake #1 is nice too...
-
Re: Which one should I get? (DUW)
Does anyone know which one was purchased? chibbi?
-
Re: Which one should I get? (DUW)
I voted 4 because it was a female and I like the big girls.
and it's cheaper to get a boy later if someday you decide to breed...

Re: Which one should I get? (DUW)
how do you know the sexes allready ?? they dont even look like their 1 year old if they been sexed dont bother
