Sculpting a BP part 1 **DU NO NO!
Well to answer your question Shel, I sculpted the head and body (not shown yet) all by hand. As for the heat pits and mouth it was all carved useing the strate Pick.

Here is a Pictural to show how I made the head.
    Enjoy

I started out with a lump of clay that i thought would be about the right size and then rolled it into a ball.

I then shaped the head useing my fingers and rolling them to make the nose.
I pressed in the sides of the nose to make the typical Ball Python Nose.

It should end up looking something like this

If your having problems remembering the 3D aspects of a BP head, ask for help from one of your own "Model" BPs like this one.

Make shure that the sides of the head look good as well. you could have an awesome looking head but later find out your BP head has a lump on the top of the head you dont know about.
    http://www.hexibase.com/~jessica/tut07.JPG

now it is time to make the Nasal ridges, place your thumb and finger and press in at the top of the nose.
    http://www.hexibase.com/~jessica/tut08.JPG
    http://www.hexibase.com/~jessica/tut09.JPG

now this will make the crown of the head to pop up a bit so press it back down and smooth it out.
    http://www.hexibase.com/~jessica/tut10.JPG

Now for the eyes! make the small lobes at the sides of the mouth where the eyes will sit above. *again you might need your BP Model for this.
    http://www.hexibase.com/~jessica/tut11.JPG

now you see the lobs and indents where the eyes will sit above.

I use stone beads for eyes that look to be a good fit.
    http://www.hexibase.com/~jessica/tut13.JPG

I place the eyes in the right spot and then press in.
It will look very out of place with the eyes in but we can fix that.
    http://www.hexibase.com/~jessica/tut14.JPG
    http://www.hexibase.com/~jessica/tut15.JPG

I take some more clay and roll it long. I then take pieces off of it roll it again and place it around the eyes.
    http://www.hexibase.com/~jessica/tut16.JPG
    http://www.hexibase.com/~jessica/tut17.JPG
    http://www.hexibase.com/~jessica/tut18.JPG

I smoth it out untill nice an flush. Repeat on the other side.
    http://www.hexibase.com/~jessica/tut19.JPG

And there you have it. The start of your BP head.

Any particular kind of clay you use?

Does it work as well with, say Fimo?

I use Sculpy or any good Polymer Clay. I like Sculpy because it carves and paints nicely

That is awesome! I really would like to get more into sculpture; you use the sculpey or the super? I think what I had was super; it was orangish and never seemed to harden util baked; I liked that property of it.

Super Sculpy is harder when baked and dosent have the carving ease like the normal stuff I use. I would use the super but it is just to hard. but the normal Sculpy is so soft that it can break or crumble easly if not handeled with care. the up side of this though is it can be carved with ease.

I need to get in touch with Hobby Lobby and get another 8 lbs of the super and 8 lbs of the normal and I will mix it to make it stronger.

Another funn sculpy is Super Flexy Sculpy. you bake it but it is SUPER flexiable and it is really fun for kids stuff.

I just got in this morning some Silver Polymer. I'm going to make some snake earings with it.
The Silver stuff molds just like the clay I use but once you bake it you have to sand it then polish it and it is actualy Silver. it is alot of $$$ though for only 8 oz of the stuff. I payed $55.95 for 12 oz of it but it should be fun stuff to work with :D

LOL I wish :P I have my very off moments and I have my good ones too. I bet once i'm done with the snake I wont be able to make anything like for quite a while. i get burned out very easly with this kind of stuff.

Thank you very much for posting that.. it helped me!

I love my super sculpey, but I'll try the regular crumbly stuff because you said so. lol

I think I just got rid of a pound of it because I thought I wouldn't use it.. *rolleyes*

This is a dumb question but where should I get varying sized stone beads?

You can get the beads at walmart in the craft section. or you can go to any craft store and get some too. I got mine form a place called The Bead Wearhouse in San Diego. If you have Super Sculpy just use that lol. you dont have to use the stuff I use.

And Styx, Good to hear. when you get something finished I would love to see.
