Can you post a pic of your "homemade" rack?
Snake rack, that is :) I want as many ideas I can see before building; can't decide whether to go with melamine, wood, or something else.

    Hi,

I'll try to post some of my pics here...hopefully it works...

    Melamine hatchling rack:

    https://ball-pythons.net/gallery/fil...8/0/racks4.JPG

Open air grow out rack for bps, or adult rack for most colubrids:

    https://ball-pythons.net/gallery/fil...8/0/racks1.JPG

    Close up of design:

    https://ball-pythons.net/gallery/fil...8/0/racks2.JPG

Didn't take pics of the CB70's, but they are the same design as the open air ones above...either way you make them or buy them your end result will be this:

    Hope some of this helps!

Re: Can you post a pic of your "homemade" rack?
There was already quite a long thread about my wife's rack - snake rack that I built that is :)

But, here is again. Very "quick-and-dirty" rack I put together with MDF to hold 5 sterilite 1996 / 74qt tubs.

    https://ball-pythons.net/gallery/fil.../8/8/rack3.jpg

These are quite large 44" tubs, so the dang thing is huge. But it holds the tubs nicely. I left the right side with a 1 foot opening, which is where I will wire flexwatt onto each shelf.

    https://ball-pythons.net/gallery/fil.../8/8/rack2.jpg

The flexwatt will be arriving Tuesday. Someone in the other thread asked to see it with the flexwatt wired up, so I will past a pic tuesday when it arrives and I slap it on. Hope this helps.

Great pics everyone! I like both the wood and mel; think that maybe the mel may be the way i go thought because I like the feel of it.. but is there a dif btw. mel and the mdf in Cue's pic? I like that rack by the way Cue; that's how I think I'll be doing it.

Mel. is basicly MDF with a white plastic coating. Holds out moisture. I will be useing Mel. on my rack.

I think the melamine is just refering to the plastic laminate coating. It is MDF but it's laminated. I think that's why melamine is recommended. Because the wood, or MDF is coated so it doesn't absorb odors or moisture as readily...wood without the coating soaks it all up... :O

    Jen,
If you need some help, or have some questions trying to build a rack like that, I have recently added a Do-it-Yourself section to my website, and have step by step instructions and pics of building a rack very similar to the one in Cue's pic. Have a look if you need some help:

The MDF is a more dense material and will stay true longer. The Mel is a less dense material but has the attraction of a coating and requires no other sealing.
Good thing you are such a studmuffin to move them around

MDF is funky looking, its almost like a super compressed piece of cardboard that you can scratch with your finger nails, and ding the corners up.

When I was building my racks I had 3 main options

    1) MDF
    2) Particle Board
    3) Melamine (which is basically particle board with melamine (a very durable thermoset plastic))

    All are heavy :)

The ones on the left are 27qt Sterilites, in the middle are 41qt sterilites, and on the right are 32qt sterilite (dividers on order to make hatchling tubs).

Hmmmm....cost of buying a prebuilt rack versus cost of flying either Cue and Tim into Ohio and locking them in my attic till they build me some dang racks! (I will leave you pizza and beer up there okay guys...I know the husbandry requirements of the average male homo sapien :) )

Edit: No beer till you measure the screwholes! I don't need a rack a la Glass okay! :P

Jo! You're BRILLIANT!!! I think we can go into business with this one! After they're done in your attic, we can keep 'em and ship 'em off to the next house that needs racks....with a modest shipping & handling fee attached for our troubles. :carrot:

    Jo and Judy,
You may want to talk to my wife first, as she will inform you that I build better racks with the beer. They are more prone to having a screw up if I am completly sober. However, I think Judy is on to something, just so long as you heat/cool pack us properly prior to shipping. We can also bring Jamie, so that he can have some proper tutelage(sp?).

I dunno about that Jamie fellow Tim. I might not have the beer funds available to keep him properly housed!

You know Jude, we might be on to something here! I could get into the import/export biz just instead of snakes it could be Tim-Chris-Jamie-inna-box! Open, install in attic, add pizza and beer and bingo! insta-rack! Hmmm....I somehow see the following happening though...

Me: Hello Mr. FedEx man....here's one big box to ship to Judy.

FedEx Man: But Ma'am...the box is kicking and cursing! What's in it?

Me (with innocent batting eyelashes on full strength): Nothing Sir. Just some errrrr.....perishable cookies I'm sending to my dear friend Judy...a LOT of them actually!

FedEx Man: But Ma'am...I just heard something coming from that box....

Box: help! help! call Adam! we have no beer in here!

Me (discretely kicking the box): I didn't hear anything. Must be the neighbours next door. They do like their beer. (muttering an aside to the box: "if you three don't hush up and stop fussing Judy will buy you cheap beer that will give you gas! do you really want to be locked in an attic with a gassy Jamie Glass!"

Box: be quiet! she's means it! I hate cheap beer! Chris get your foot out of my face! OMG THAT'S NOT YOUR FOOT!

I think this might work Judy! As long as the wives/girlfriends don't mind. I could probably cut them in on the profit margin and heck since they already have racks, they could just go shopping with the extra cash! :D

We have made a decision; we're going with the 41-qt. Sterilites. I got one at Wally World for size and measurement reasons, and we'll get the melamine soon and measure/create our rack. :)
I am now thinking if we should arrange them lengthwise or not; if the wide side should face the front or the narrow side should? I am thinking more along the lines of having wide side front, like the middle rack in AAAJohnson's pic.

Id skip the UTHs and go straight to Flexwatt. Cheaper and easy'r to use. Wont leave your tubs uneven. You can run it up the back.Or you could take it the hard way and run it on the bottom of each shelve. Your choice.:)
