What have I gotten myself into!?
A quick peek at one small facet of an idea that turned into a "weekend project" that has undoubtedly run amok!

I'm documenting everything I am doing as best I can in turning a wall of our basement into a rack system I'm building in three phases. The first phase will have two joined racks each holding 10 (maybe 11 if it doesn't wind up being too high) Sterilite 1960's.

Oh goodie! I love DIY projects documented in picture form! I also love how weekend projects often turn into month-long, mega-frustrating, stress factories! It's always worth in the end though, have fun!!!

thanks for sharing that link with me. i never know what you are all talking about when you give numbers to the bins. LOL

so is that size good for adult balls? cause i thought it needed to be 12" not 6"

I think it's the size most breeders use for their adults, although some of Adam's monster females may need the next size up. :P

6" of vertical space is plenty for any adult BP.

oh okay... well that'll make it easier for us when we build our rack. with the three beauties we'll be getting from adam... we are going to rack em! and put two larger spaces for our boas in the rack as well!

(of course, we'll end up rackin the cornsnakes too)

Nope hold dog food actually hehe. I have no free surface areas - looks like a tornado hit down here - i have to really shimmy to work my way to the compter.

Would that it were so simple! It holds down the flexwatt since the cords etc want to make it slide off that little solder area.

Good luck, Smulk! I hope to start a similar racking process if other "weekend projects" would quit popping up, lol. I can't wait to see how it all pans out for you though; I know you had a lot of r-maids stacked up previously (and now) right? Definately, you should keep the Before pics so that you can sigh with relief and joy when you're finally done! I plan to keep the shots of my mismatched, size-varying tanks for the same reason.

My last 2 weekends were spent much the same way, made a 10 level rack for the 1960's, and then a 10 level rack for the 1756's. I dont have a "Snake Room" so I close in the sides to keep the heat in.

I recommended that Matt drink lots of alcoholic beverages so that a) he'd be less pissed off if he messed up and b) feel less pain when he hammers his thumb accidentally. /nod :8:

Kind of tedious having to ensure the height on each one is uniform! Off a little too much either way and you have loose snakes or a slot that in time will be hard if not imposible to get the tub into!

I had to move the tarantula shelf out of the way and my b.smithi was unhappy enough with it that I got a chestfull of kicked hairs - just add it to all the other building injuries hehe.

Here's where it sits right this minute. If I am lucky and non-stop I'll have it wrapped up tonight.

    http://www.madwag.com/UNSHARD/wallrack3.jpg

Testing each chain of flex before I get it built in is why you see flexwatt hanging out of the front end.

I am not sure if i finished IT or IT finished me! I still have to clean up my mess, populate it and then do what writeup might come in handy - though i'm not sure how useful it will be (how mahy folks are going to want to anchor it into their wall hehe).

But it's wired warm and ready!

Re: What have I gotten myself into!?
Surprisingly no nails nor glue - but an awful lot of screwing.

OK so thats phase 1 ;)

Seriously! Though it will be a while until I dive right into the next 2 sections. I still have to pretty that one up - but it's fired up and cozy to go. The next two parts will hold the taller version of the 1960s (forget the number) in 2 columns of 6 and then on the end a single column to hold a stack of 5 or 6 huge reptile tubs.

Yeah I know - Icarus syndrome, right?

Yeah - maybe overkill on the timber but not by much. Given the 3/4 ply 11 high begged for the 2x4. I am ready now for my honorary structural engineering degree for fudging the load-bearing calculations lol.

I have to admit Vaughn, the ease of cleaning/maintenance was high on the list of motivating factors!

You know it Judy - as inhibiting as lack of funds can be even when it can be scraped up lack of SPACE really kills that potential. Gladly that is no longer an issue! Besides we've got all these little bp's that will grow into that space before we know it!
