Re: Ugh I Hate Petco!!!
I have to agree some petco's suck. Some are fairly decent if they are lucky to have a reptile keeping employe or 2. I went today and some lady was buying anole's and when one got out of the cage the guy there says "Woops, we lose them all the time" What and idiot!! There was also 2 dead baby beardies with crickets eating them in one of the cages. I just try not to let it bother me anymore even though it never gets easy

Re: Ugh I Hate Petco!!!
It really boils down to the employees in each store. I know of a Petco nearby that has "OK" coudntions; the rodents all have nice Carefresh bedding and are seperated by sex. The fish tanks are OK; actually stellar if you compare them the the tanks of other local stores; for some reason their water at this petco is always crystal clear. They do have a knowledgible staff there.. but the reptiles kind of upset me. The caging is not so much inadequate, as, crowded; multiples in a cage, and you know how they set up their wall units; boas in cages beside BPs with only a grate in between.. can yousay IBD potential?
Pet stores are pretty-much redundant for me anyway. I buy supplies for the herps either online or at walmart (pottery for hides, etc.) And I breed rats for food, and get their supplies from a local feed store.. I just go into pet stores for novelty reasons and to buy the occasional fish.

Re: Ugh I Hate Petco!!!
I have to admit most Petco's are not nice places.
Luckly the one by my house where I get Ozzy's rats is pretty decent. They actually have a reptile guy working in reptiles and a fish guy in the fish dept.
They where recently remodeled and have nice set up's for the fish, rodents and reps. W/ climate controlled cages etc.
The guy that takes care of the reptiles actually breeds bp's and retic's
It still is a chain petstore but a little better than most.

Re: Ugh I Hate Petco!!!
The last time I went into a Petco was enough to make me never want to step foot in the place again, it wasn't because of overcrowding animals, it was because of the information they gave to a customer.
A woman and her 10 to 12 year old son were there buying his first tarantula, which they unfortunately carry. The salesman told them that an H. lividium, or colbolt blue, would be a good first tarantula. These are old world tarantulas and are aggressive, and usually spend most of the time hiding in deep burrows. Then I looked closer at the tarantula in question. It also was a hooked out male!! That means its life could be measured in months, and this idiot is telling these people that this aggressive spider at the end of its life will be a good pet for this child for years to come!!!!!! He also told them that it would be an excellent hand pet!!!!!!!
I couldn't help it, I had to jump in. I did. I whipped out my pictures of my tarantulas to prove I had some and knew what I was talking about. The woman, thank heavens listened to me and left with out the blue.
Then the employee called the manager and had me kicked out of the store.

I don't know much about Tarantulas, in fact I'm an extreme arachnaphobic, but I see where you're coming from. I'd have said something to the manager such as, "******* you, you ******. I'm going to **** your **** in the **** whilst ****ing your little **** of a croney over there. **** you!". Or, "Why don't you tell the people the truth, or are you too busy making profits to know any better?" I think the second one is a bit more rational.

Re: Ugh I Hate Petco!!!
Yeah... not all Petcos are evil like people make them out to be. Like every other pet store, it depends on the people that work there. Petco does alot in our area with finding homes for adoptions and such. They even have pets in the store that are adoptions only. I don't think that you can just make a blank statement about every Petco. If anything, I think their biggest fault is in their hiring practices.
Peace

Re: Ugh I Hate Petco!!!
Just last wensday when I went to petco to get our f/t food (unfortunetly there are no other stores around that could give us the appropriate size food for our RTB. We buy from rodentpro but ran out of food 2 weeks ago. We though it'd be ok not to oder in more because our snakes were shedding, and we wait a week after shed to feed them. Well anywho we went their to get a meal for all of our slithering babies and well we were at the counter paying for the food when the cashier man said to the lady that was about to leave (she worked there) " Hey feed the birds before you go" the women pissed me off, she said " I have been working 10hour and work two jobs a day have someone else feed the birds" this pisses me off. If this happens like this then NO WONDER THE BIRDS THERE ARE SOO SKINNY!! Same with the snakes. There is an "so called retpile expert" that works there but yet he is afraid of being strike at by a 2ft Bp?? Makes me wonder why these snakes are sooo skinny if they have a "so called" expert working there. I hate petco and a lot of petstores that are only in for the profit not for the customer or the animal...

Re: Ugh I Hate Petco!!!
Also like before they now have "adopt a cat" and they had it in the middle of the area near the cashier and the doors and well peopel bring in their dogs WHO HARASS the cats. SO sad, so I told the store they can get in trouble for abuse and many other things I shall not say here because of young kids who come here. But believe me, they better start acting right or this momma is going back there, and they WILL NOT be happy about it.

Re: Ugh I Hate Petco!!!
i went to a petco today, and as far as reptiles, i don't think they had horrible conditions. i saw full sheds. they had a medium sized boa...so they actually do have snakes that eat

Re: Ugh I Hate Petco!!!
From my experience, petco has nice workers that know nothing. I got my bp from there, sorry but i couldn't find a breeder in my area and it just so happens they were on sale and i knew i wanted one for a while. But when i brought nathair home a week later he fricken had mites!! It turns out they all did, referring to him and the other three in his cage. They didn't even know till i told them about it. and after that it was a week before they pulled them, to get them treated, but they did cut me a 62 dollar check to take nathair to the vet for mites, which was twice the amount i paided for him. So they are nice but ignorant!!!!
Also, the cage that had four baby bp's consisted of a large water bowl, two fake plants, no meters, and no hides. I guess that the unit that the cage was in controlled everything but, NO HIDES?? whats goin on with that?? My nathair is having a pimpin good time now that he is outta there. I kinda spoil him.
PETLAND, is so much better. The people that work there are so much more knowledgeable but their tanks and all the stuff seems a little cheaper, not referring to their prices but the equipment for the pets they have on display. Still they treat the animals much better, atleast the reptiles.
sorry that was so long but i felt the need to say that,

Re: Ugh I Hate Petco!!!
It's true, the employees are what make the difference at the chains. I used to work at my local Petsmart. I quit A. because of the customers and B. because the pay was terrible. When you get hired they give you a little booklet with a bunch of very general information, that's it. Most of the ppl I worked with had no clue, the only reason I was different is b/c I love animals and make an effort to learn as much as I can about them. It's very hard work. And yes, you get some very rude and also very stupid, selfish customers. Example: at least twice a week we'd find abandoned animals left in boxes or on leashes at the store front. The only reason I stayed so long is b/c of the animals. It goes both ways in my experience. There are terrible employees who don't know &*#$, and there are terrible customers who don't give a &*#$. I think the problem is people in general. :frustrate

Re: Ugh I Hate Petco!!!
our near by pet co had their reptile lic taken. the only animals they sell are mice and fish. down south as i've said before not many people have, handled, or like snakes. and here pet smart is the same as petco. i've come to hate all big chain pet stores, i buy my dog and cat food at the near by (non pet) store and mice from a small family pet store. please watch out for money grubing sons of @!#&*^$. :2cent:

Re: Ugh I Hate Petco!!!
We can't put the blame on "petco employees" , just petco. How can they call themselves petco and not provide services to all pets? Here in Houston, I went there for rats last thursday and all they have is pinkies and hoppers. And this sales guy tried to sell me a $5.00 hamster :groinkick. "WHAT TYPE OF BULL IS THAT!!! " Kinda made me want to apply just to change somethings for the better.

Re: Ugh I Hate Petco!!!
I'm sure that the reason I witnessed what I did at Petco was because the employee had no ideat what he was talking about and his manager wanted a sale. It isn't the employees faults, I'm sure there are some of them who want to take good care of the animals but lack the knowledge to do so.
Petco need to supply better environments for their animals and much, much, better training for their employees.

Re: Ugh I Hate Petco!!!
Petco does have its problems, but in my opinion it is not that bad. They could do better at releiving overcrowding, and placing more hides in their habitats. But compared to our towns other pet store, Petco's herps live in palaces with attentive keepers.
One time, and the last time ever, that I went into the other store it was beyond belief. I wish I could do more to close the place. The worst part of it was a pair of fully grown red tail boas in a 30 gallon tank. They had no water, hide, branch, and only one normal lightbulb. Not only that but the tank was smeared with feces and both snakes had some mites, as did most of the other snakes.
After that I have always gone to Petco, because it seems to be pretty good. Although we have at least 3 or 4 employees at Petco that have a herp themselves and so at least ours has a knowledgeable staff. So I could see how it might not be so good elsewhere.

Re: Ugh I Hate Petco!!!
another reason why i don't like petco, is because they cause small petstores to struggle or even go under in general. The reptile shop i worked at went under because people liked the "deals" they would get at the Co. since they buy animals in huge bulk small buisnesses seem to struggle. Just my experience though!!

Re: Ugh I Hate Petco!!!
I bought my first snake at Petco and the only problems he had were shedding, which after a couple sessions became complete.
