cool thing in terrarium to make people say wow!

besides the actual Bp lol, is there anything outta the oridnary that looks realyl cool in the terrarium for your BP that wont harm her/him and will make things look super cool?

There's lots of stuff! Be as creative as you want, just make sure there's no chemicals or sharp edges to it or anything they may knock over on themselves. Here's a couple of my enclosures. If you're willing to clean poo off it, it works! Stuff meant for fish tanks looks really cool, but I'd sand down the edges. Some can be kinda sharp. Fancy cat dishes, fake plants from a hobby store, you name it. Here's some examples from my collection.

Usually the stuff that looks really cool doesn't cut the mustard for the snakes security. I had a whole bunch of fancy hides that I spent too much money on that I ended up switching out for the plain black hides that cost me 5 bucks. Since the switch I haven't had a refused meal.

Just lucky timing, lol. I did get the Creature Cubbyhole hide idea from an Adam post though! All my snakes love em. Thanks, Adam! :) Inexpensive, easy to clean, and perfectly sized.

I got two of the small size for six bucks at a reptile expo. You should be able to order them online. They're made by ESU.

The only gripe I have with them is my BP pushes them all around his tub! LOL

Rearranging hides is fun! It's Gomez and Ma-tsu's favorite past times! Here's where I get mine, I link to it on the VBB caresheet. Neptune hardly ever leaves his, he loves it so much.

The skull is actually meant to be an ashtray but viv decor is a much better use of it. Gomez used to be able to fit inside that thing, it was so cute. :) They come in a bunch of styles too, nice and smooth and heavy.

I have those little black hides in Imriels tank as well but i hot glued some ivy vines to mine so they are kind camoflaged, and i found this cool temple/heads piece in the aquarium section of the store!

I just LOVE the way you've decorated this tank! Is that paper towels on the bottom? How do you keep it humid in there? How big is the tank?
I have a 60 gallon for my boys, I use reptibark, they have two hides and a water dish, a large UTH on one side and a small UTH on the cool side.
I am lucky to get 38-42% humidity without spritzing four times a day.
I'm seriously thinking about revamping the tank, and I would LOVE tips and pointers.

Thank you .. its his new tank he just got this past week.. its a 20 gallon acrylic tank. Yes that is papertowel on the bottom, which i may need to switch out for something that holds humidity better. I am having humidity issues, so i am misting the tank with water a few times a day untill i figure out a better solution.
As far as cool stuff to put in .. i highly recommend checking out the aquarium stuff.. they have lots of cool colums and egyptian looking stuff as well as temple-y looking stuff and pirate ships etc.. and of course fake ivy and plants go along way to making it look fun... i got a long poster with a cool waterfall to put along the back to help make it feel safer for him and look prettier to me.. lol

thats my newbie 2 cents for decorating! as for heat and such i have been reading here obsessively and trying to do my best to make sure its a perfect as possible so he can grow up big and strong!! :snake:

A lot of times a snake in a terrarium makes people say wow. I like to keep it simple, 2 hides and a water bowl. I do use aspen though.

My personal intersts vs. the animals are really diff. Probably same with anyone else out there. We see something cool and say " hmm should I get this for my snakes, its so cool looking" but we need to consider the animal ALWAYs first. They didnt want to be domesticated and brought into human life. So we should provide as natural environment to not stress these beautiful snakes out. On all my enclosures I have a fake background to beautify my animal's home. And to add to that I have fake plants and BIG water bowl multiple hiding places, ALL NATURAL looking. I use over head heat source to stimute day light but with half of my snakes in our Family living room always getting sunlight I dont think its necassary but I do anyway because in the winter, the air temp. drop more than the actual service temps(that the heating pad provide), so thats my main reason to use it. And when its summer time and too hot to have the sun blazing on in our Living room its a good idea to have a heat lamp. However we do not feed live even though Im sure my snakes would take it easily, I just have a too big of a heart for all living creatures to hurt another or sit back and watch one die. Im one of those people if I see something die I must save it (unless its an actual wild animal eating another wild animal outside my house). But just add plants an natural looking hides and a backround for your snake, you'll see that your snake will enjoy it a lot mroe than having something that is not very natural or camouflage it:)

And come out of its hides more, and show more activity and interest in things then a snake only kept in a simple enclosure. My snakes never even think about escaping because they like their set ups, and snake will most likely want "out" if its home isnt as appealing as the seat of a couch or chair.. or under the bed beatwen boxes or toys.:cool:

My snakes also don't think about escaping and they are in tub set-ups. I use a simple set-up, because my animals feed more consistently in them than they ever did in a naturalistic tank set-up. To me, that's the sign of a happy snake. They really DON'T care how you decorate, as long as you provide them with an enclosure that isn't too big, that offers warmth, security and food.

Snakes are happy with two hides, water, and the right temp, and the right humidity.

They don't care if you have fake plants.

I will. I'm just tired of the general consensus of what seems to be the majority people of this messageboard that tubs are better, hands down. I find it very frustrating seeing it said over and over again; one method or the other is not the answer for everyone.

I used to keep my snakes in tanks. This was when I first got into ball pythons and I wanted my tanks to look visually appealing. Now I use tubs because I no longer have ball pythons for visual appeal (breeding now). To this day, I feel that there is absolutly nothing wrong with keeping your snakes in a tank for the visual aspect. Decorate it as you wish. I think some of those tanks in those pics look great! What ever keeps you happy, do it. As long as you can maintain the proper humidity and temps, then decorate as much as you want. I know from personal experiance that, yes, it is harder to maintain, but if looks is what you're after...then do it. Don't let anyone change your mind.

i'm with cass on this, even though i do tubs/racks. that is my choice and what i prefer. tanks are just as good, they just require more work and checking. you can decorate all you want, any way you want. it is just more to clean that's all.
i'm too lazy for all that cleaning, so tubs works for me.
if you like tank setups and the added maintenance doesn't bother you, then tank away, this is america!:soapbx:

The same thing can be said about the other questions we see asked over and over again with the same answers over and over again. It really is no different than any other subject brought up. So, tired of it or not, we have to be patient and just get used to hearing the same things over and over again. Or, choose not to read/paticipate in a thread b/c we are not wanting to go over "that subject again" instead of getting upset about these subjects coming up again. There is always going to be someone who asks again the same question that has been asked a million times.

Bottom line, there is NOT ONE right way to go about taking care of any animal properly. As long as you achieve your temps, hide needs, feeding needs, etc and you get the same results as some body else doing it another way, than there is nothing wrong with doing things the way you choose to do them, the most important thing is to be sure the animals needs are met, after that, anything thing else extra, such as how its environment looks to you is gravy! There is nothing wrong with making the enviroment a display item for the human eyes who appreciate this..as long as the animals needs are met without taking from the animal in any way. The key is to know, which animals tolerate being "on display" better than others and switching those whose caging is for display to more utility type when the need arises.

With this being said, I would like to remind everyone, we are always going to see the same questions come up, resulting in the same answers and/or arguements attached to them, please try to be tolerant of this, it happens. I have seen the same wave of questions since this sites beginning...I have had to become more tolerant, it is the only way to be in an enviroment such as this that caters to the educational needs of one who seeks it.

I often refer people to your link on setting up a glass enclosure. It works for you, and you and Cleo enjoy it - that's all that really matters at the end of the day!

I did say that for ME, a tank set-up was not ideal. I don't believe I said that people should change to tubs, more offering a counter thought on Sapphire's statement.

Sorry Rabernet. I was talking about Tank enclosures. Thats what my snakes are in. And Im sure your snakes feel secure in a tub because they like tighter areas. But with large tanks or a glass small 10gal tank its better to have fake plants. Sorry to all those who use TUBs for their snakes I've heard Bp's love them because they feel safe in them. But what I should've said was simple enclosure for a tank is just not good enough. Because two hides, 1 water dish and open on all sides makes a snake scared and problems will occur.

A note to Cass, I love keepin my snakes in tanks. Esp. The ones inmy livin room, cause they're nicely displayed. However, I am gonna have to switch my balls to a rack w/tubs, cause my collection has grown so fast, and keeps growing. I just don't have the room anymore for ALL my tanks. But, the rest are stayin in tanks..;)

I have most of mine in tanks now; one lives in an r-maid. For I'm-in-a-hurry-little-time-for-cleaning, I think the r-maids rock. Lately I have found myself with little free time and more chores; I really can't spend much time cleaning out cages. And add to that a current bout of mites; my tanks are nothing to look at. Paper towel substrate; hides of varying sorts (TV-dinner trays cut to size/upside down plastic planters, etc) heavy dog bowls for water. Once these mites are cleared upwe will be building a rack, but I plan to keep my BCI as more if a display snake; he will never live in a tub. I have a ince cage now that'll be good for a few years and then he'll go into our 125g tank or if our fish are still alive (which they will mostlikely be) then we'll build something :)
I really miss cypress mulch, but with the mites, can't do it right now.

Wow, I'm surprised this thread went in a tub vs tank direction! I expected it to be more natural setup vs unnatural setup after that one post!

I love naturalistic set ups! They're beautiful! But really, whatever style of decor we choose is for us. Snakes don't care what the display looks like, really. They don't have the best eyesight to begin with, and most of our snakes are captive bred so they don't know what their environment is "supposed" to look like anyway.

If it's a tree branch, a resin statue, or a He-man figure, all the snake knows is that they're climbin on somethin! They care what it feels/smells like, not what it looks like. What it looks like is what WE care about. :)

Also, I'm a fan of belly heat over lamps, but then I live in AZ. Belly heat is a lot less likely to dry out the poor dears over here than lamps will.
