How did you pick your snakes' name?

I was just curious how everybody picked their snakes names.

When it came time for me to name my 1st BP, I found it harder than naming my other pets. Anyway, I ended up naming him Kaa, even though hes a BP not an Indian Python like in The Jungle Book. Also, in the original Jungle Book (not Dinsny's), Kaa was a good guy who helped Baloo save Mowgli from the monkeys & In Eygptian history, Kaa was a king.:snake:

I enjoy naming my herps human names, like my large male Bp is Benny, but i have a toad named matthew. I think it is funny to reffer to them as "human names". But in general i don't name my herps and i am willing to let other people name them, but i don't reffer to them as that name, i will same the big male, or "the little guys" (my juvi RES).

i was going to name my snake Brittany after my friend Brittany but when i got my snake....she was sooo cute, i couldn t resist calling her baby....so now her name is baby

We use the names of characters in books we like. We do that with all of our animals.
Right now I'm trying to come up with a great couples name. "Scarlett and Rhett" is most obvious, as they are my all time fav literary couple, but I'm still trying to think of others. I have less than a week to decide! :eek:

well my fist one raphael is a biblical reference meaning archangel, the others are more from their personalites, oscar(the grouch), cpt (one eyed) jack, honey (our own AOL snake), and spot(on head).

My kenyan sand boa (Seraph) is named after the angel that was cast out of heaven, and into hell.


My granite python (Burzum) is named after and old school norwegian black metal band. It was a 1-man band whom it's only member killed Euronymous, a leading member of another black metal band named Mayhem.

Our BP is named Cleo, short for Cleopatra, a nod to the lore behind the latin name python regius (royal python) that Queen Cleopatra used to wear ball pythons around her wrists.

Our Suri is name Carmen because of her red coloration and that it's Spanish name (and Carmen is a South American boa).

Mine is named "Tomorrow" in a Zulu translation. (Kisasa) I wanted to name her "Tomorrow" because I had to wait SO long to get her...and she is my hope for all my "someday dreams" about beautiful ball pythons.

Hazard - was a very defensive bitey ball python baby..also managed to get into electrical tape that was holding his container shut for the NARBC auction immediately after the auction
Princess - is my "prissy" ball python adult female. "You just cleaned my cage? I don't like this paper, I'm going to dump my water bowl, etc". resulting in her cage being cleaned frequently

Ko Kame - means turtle in japanese, she has a turtle/asian character marking on her head.

Marilyn - after marilyn monroe

The sarawak short tail and my het ghost female ball python still have no definative names.

I named my BP Spike from the Cowboy Bebop anime, as he is one of my favorite characters of all time. He is the guy in my pic.

Let's see...

Tuleo, Miguel, and Chel were all named after characters in the movie The Road To Eldorado

Sunny, Blaze, Scarlet, Sunrise, Snickers, Daisy, R.C, and Magnum were all nemed after a certain charateristic they have.

Anita, Shela, and A.J were named after people

Our newest six we just got are my dad's and mine's christmas presents so their names all have to do something with christmas.

Once you get up to 25 BPs you kinda start running out of names;)

I chose a human name for my snake: Lydia. But that's just me. Good luck chosing a name!:)

Mine is named Grishnákh,after an orc character in the Lord of the Rings. I like it because is not a name that's mentioned in the movies but he does appear in the second movie. He's the orc that gets stumped by Treebeard (the giant tree). If I ever buy another one, and I am thinking in a corn snake I'll name it Uglúk, another orc (Uruk Hai).:D

I also named our first BP Kaa...weird. And for the same reason. I generally give all my pets human names, this stems from thinking I would never have a human baby, so I named all my pets growing up after names I would of named my human children. So now we have animals named Lilly, Cotton, Masin, Merlin, Morgin, also had Jaden, Jaded, Kaa, Angelica, Kaos, Manta, Logen and so on.

As for my BP's right now, I have been naming them from there behavior and letting them "tell" me there names. So I have Willow, who we call Big Willy, she's large and in charge. We have Scout, which means adventerous because he is always on the hunt and trying to figure out how to get out of his tank. We have Tiombe which is African for Shy, she never comes out..I think her tank could be on fire and she would hide in her hide lol. And last we have Rajiv, which is sanskrit for Stripe, because he has a partial stripe down is back.

So there ya go. I have also found putting random words in a hat and picking one to be affective. Think of anything and write it down, you never know.
I think by far the best name I have heard over the years of working at Vet. hospitals and kennels is a dog named Dioge. Everyone seemed to be naming there dogs "dog" or "puppy" which I think is sad, but this guy named his Dioge, which was pronounced "D-O-G" lol.

When I name my animals, I MUST see them and spend some time getting to know them.



My cornsnake was named by my Grandfather though. It's an Italian song about a mouse (the mouse was named Pepino) He got a kick out of that, when he found out I feed him mice.



My dog's name came to me in a dream. I went to the breeder intending to pick a male yellow Lab and ended up with her, but I dreamt of her the night before I picked her out. Weird huh?

My BP took a while but the name suits him to a "T". Gambit is an X-Men character from Louisiana. I bought Gambit from a breeder in Louisiana (thanks Tim Bailey:D ).

well i named my girl copernicus.... it was a random name. it doesn't fit her or not fit her... and i cant think of any other name so i guess it just stuck but i might change it, i've had her for less than a week

my sister named her male.. clementine? imo it fits him, he's kind of shy

I don't really have a method for naming mine - although I do obsess over it. It HAS to fit them - if I know I'm getting a new snake - off to the name data bases I go and start writing down all the names I like. Then I waffle a bit and finally pick a name.

Casper, Piper and Oliver were the easiest to name

Casper the het hypo (ghost)
Piper the het pied
Oliver the het clown (after Oliver Hardy)

Sierra "told" me her name - she was named before I left the show with her - she just screamed Sierra.

I was reading a book (don't remember which now) where the main character was named Sophie when I decided to buy Ms. Sophie - and it seemed to fit her.

And Reese came pretty easy, because she reminded me of a peanut butter cup, but I didn't want to call her Reeses (with the extra "S" at the end).

Someone else named Bindi - because of her two dots on her head - and bindi is the one dot on the forehead in the Indian culture.

Kashmire was my first - and I was reading The SnakeKeeper's website and Colette's first snake was named Kashmire - and I thought it was very cute. I even e-mailed her to see if she minded (I was a dork - I know! LOL)

Sullivan used to be Kiah - until he decided he wanted to be a boy, and he was named after one of my favorite Canine Assistants.

Cueball named Leeloo and it got endorsed as a name by other members here!

Joanna named Godiva in all her chocolately goodness.

Pandora was sent as a replacement to Sullivan when he was sexed as a boy (but purchased as a female) and I joked about it being a Pandora's Box.

Echo was just a cool name and seemed to fit.

Karl named J-Lo

Pretzel just looked like a pretzel to me and it suits her personality, and Bailee and Mackenzie were names I just really liked.

And my boy that's not here yet - my lemon pastel male - Karl wanted to name Wilson, so he could say "Wiiiiiiilllllllssssoooooooooonnnnnn!!!!!" from the Tom Hanks movie (Castaway). We settled on Winston instead - for my sanity.

Felix started out as Kaa, but he's too small, and it didn't really "fit". He became Felix after Felix the Cat, because of his eyes. Wrigley, because he did that all the time (wriggled).


Pissy Snake, b/c he'd try to bite you as soon as look at you. He'd be in his hide or looking out, and you could be walking by his tank. All of a sudden you'd hear THUNK & it was Pissy hitting the glass. I swear, I was always waiting to see him hurt himself after thwacking the glass, but he never did.

CeCe is short for CC (Candy Cane). She's the closest we have right now to a candy cane corn. Oreo for the cookie, b/c she WAS black and white.

Baby just fit for our first snake, and Snoopy had a Snoopy blowing a bubble shape pattern on her back, and we kept the name when we bought her.

Petey is for Pt, or Platinum from the Periodic Table. He's het albino, going to be our $$ maker investment, and he's a very silvery gray color. Very loving and gentle for a baby (Thanks Jimi!) so Petey fits.

Kishnah (Keesh-nah) was a word that Robin made up, but it seems to fit the little Houdini. Flurry, because he's a snow corn, and Robin didn't like the name Frosty. :rolleyes:

Started using the Greek mythology. That's been an interest of mine when I was in HS. So there's Hera, Zeus, Apollo. Freddie then became Fredericka, but is now (it appears) to be Freddie again. Precious was named that when we got him and we didn't change it.

Pinky T is our pastel RTB, with very cherry red saddles, tail and belly markings, and I remembered the name from the Happy Days TV show. Her full name is Pinky Tuscadero, after Fonzie's cousin(?) Pinky T.

The other pets are named for characteristics, personality or situation, like Stewie's. He's actually Scabbers Two (Stew) b/c Robin wants to keep a Scabbers, (after Scabbers passes away later), and Stewie looked like Scabbers. Robin Hood is a blue hooded buck, Dumbelina is a little beige hooded, dumbo doe. Peekaboo, b/c she'd always peek her head out of the little gerbil tunnel tube of her first home when the rest of her body was crammed inside, until she got used to us and being handled.

Some of the others, like Roxie, Tundra and Happy were named that when we got them.

I love picking out names... I often have a name already decided on long before I get the snake!

Falkor, our corn, is named after the good luck dragon in The Neverending Story. Karen and I are both Jim Henson nerds, and we wanted to give our first snake a very non threatening name to help ease our families into snakedom. ;)

Gomez, our bp, is named after Gomez Addams! One of my favorite old black and white shows/comics/movies. We figured that was an awesome name for a ball python! A little gothy, but friendly and charming! A little charmer that winds up your arm giving you kisses. ;) Cara mia!

Ma-tsu our female Vietnamese Blue Beauty, I named after a Southeast Asian goddess which is actually spelled lots of ways (Mazu, Matsu, Ma-Tsu, etc) we just picked our favorite spelling. One of my favorite Ma-tsu stories really suits our little diva... They say that if you're lost at sea and call her name, she will come right away to aid you! But if you call her by "Empress of Heaven" (another of Her titles) instead of by her name it will take her a little longer to get to you, because she has to put on her finest gown and look her best. That's our girl to a T!

Neptune our male VBB actually came with that name, and it suits him perfect! Not only a blue planet, but a tempermental Roman sea god! That's our boy! I also just love how it sounds. I love the name Neptune. :)

Little Irwin our rubber boa was kind of a therapy perchase. I'm a big Steve Irwin fan, and it broke my heart to see him go. A little memorial in herp form, if you will. Rubber boas are also native to where Terri's from, and they start out a khaki color and turn dark green as they get older... kind of like Steve's khakis turned dark green when he was croc hopping. :happycry:

I even already have a few more future snake names planned out...

I want to name our next male VBB (next purchase after we move, I'm thinkin!) Mana after Mana Sama whom I fangirl over on a regular basis. He's the gorgeous crossdressing mastermind behind Malice Mizer and Moi Dix Mois, my favorite j-rock bands. Well, favorite bands. He always dresses in blue, and you'd never know that was a guy... he's just too pretty.

I also want to name our future Caulker Cay boa Batman. Because I am a geek, and I just think that would be awesome. They're naturally pretty anery, battish patterns down the back like other RTBs and it's just fun to say. "Meet... Batman!" "I need to clean out Batman's cage." "Time to feed Batman!" "Eew, Batman peed on me!" I mean... that'll just be awesome, lol! Poor snake...

Girls are harder to name for some reason, but our gals will most likely all be named after goddesses. :) Maybe... an anery hurricane corn named Sadako is *awfully* tempting... or even a female VBB

I forgot about Beaker, my male gopher snake. Named after the muppet. In reality, Zith is the super pink gopher snake, but she's a genetic stripe, so she had to get the name. I don't own any green striped snakes that would suit the name better.

ball python - Kamau - African name meaning 'quiet warrior'

kenyan sand boas - Fred & George - from Harry Potter.. used to be George & Gracie, but one day Gracie popped a hemipene, and became Fred. George also means 'earthmover' ..that's what sand boas are!

hog island boa - Diva - she's such a queen.. and beautiful. When you touch her she gives you a look like 'how DARE you touch ME, filthy human'

roughscaled sand boa - Demeter - named after the gentle goddess of agriculture

Blood pythons - Meatball & Habanera - one look at Meatball and you see why he got his name.. and Habanera.. meant as a female version of the red hot habanero pepper.

granite burmese python - Harry - he's my dirty Harry.. always making a mess. The name also means 'home ruler' which is fitting as one day he will be my biggest snake.

yellow anacondas - Rusalka, Mortimer & Lurch - A rusalka is an undead water nymph who lures victims into the water with her beauty and drowns them in her lake (fitting for an anaconda) Lurch is just a cute name for a conda.. and Mortimer means still or dead water.. another fitting name I think. :)

dumerils boas - Bellatrix & Donovan - Bellatrix means 'female warrior' and Donovan means 'dark warrior'. Donovan is a dark phase dumerils.

surinam red tailed boas - Ophelia, Rowan, and Julinar - Ophelia is a greek name meaning 'serpent', Rowan means 'little red one' and Julinar is just a pretty name from a game.

speckled kingsnake - Mote - she has lots of specks.. or motes on her pattern.

california kingsnakes - Bodacious, Beauregard, and Gretchen - Bodacious is.. well.. bodacious! Beauregard means 'beautiful view' and Gretchen is wretched... wretched Gretchen!

mexican black kingsnake - Lotus - she's my black lotus!

honduran milk snakes - Mehitabel and Druid - dispicable Mehitabel (ill tempered beast) and Druid came with his name.

albino nelson's milksnake - Skittle - he's the color of skittles!

greyband kingsnake - Nikolai - one of my favorite names.

Orey is named after George Orwell, just because I like Orwell and because Animal Farm made me aware that I need to be part of politics, or politics can make decisions for me. So I try to be very politically aware, and that has nothing to do with snakes... but my boyfriend just calls him Boot. Not because he would make a good pair of boots, either, he just thinks he should be called Boot and nothing will change his mind!

If I get a second, I've decided I will name it Hux after Aldous Huxley, Brave New World is an amazing book.
Apparently I have a thing for dystopic British authors :P

dexter is my ball python. he named himself the day i met him. didn't bring him home for another two weeks. (daughter had to move out before we could get a snake LOL)

sabrina my suri rtb was named by my mom

sevasti is my snow corn, named after my sister

valentino is my bloodred corn... suited him (and i just now realize that he has the same name as my ex father in law who hated me LOL)

katie our okeetee - just seemed like the right name

gandalf the grey is obviously after LOTRs. my hubby has read the trilogy twice a year for more years than he can remember... a long time fan. so when we got an anery a corn (all grey) - it seemed like the right name!

any pets we have that respond to their names... we let them name themselves (via meditation) ;)

I always wondered where the name Habanera came from! And my brain always wants to say Hanna-Barbera for no good reason when I try to say it outloud. :nerd:

i guess my snakes name themselves. i handle them and a name will stick out very strongly. my corn snake is named malackai after one of the main characters of CHILDREN OF THE CORN, my royal python is named howard after h.p. lovecraft, then my beardie is named puff the magic dragon(my girl named him), and my gecko is named geico after the car insurance gecko, i had a burmese python named monkey and a rtb named goober, then a albino king named squirt becuz he crapped on me everytime i picked him up.:mad: lol..........as i think about the snake i purchase next i'll get a name also. so i guess it's meditative almost telepathic:snake: :snake: :rockon:

Lavey was named after Anton LaVey. Ginger was formerly Goblin until we found out she's a female :). Bela, named after Bela Lugosi, the vampire actor, though she's a girl. Luna, after the moon goddess. Samael, another occult reference and neat band. And Apache the BCI, after the Native American tribe. I am into the occult/native american mysticism and the names fit!

I'm a big Matrix fan most of mine are named after character's in the movie. Wilma was named after the hurricane that hit 2 day's after I bought her. And Mystique she's just that , Now Jeanna was named after the famou's adult movie star , My spider will be named charlotte after the kiddie book.

My indian pythons name is Naga. after the Naga tribe in Indian (Sir Lanka) who beleive that they can morph into the snake god.

I am a huge fan of the anime Inuyasha, and have named several of my pets after characters from the show depending on relevance, thus I named my snake Tsubaki after a dark priestess who would summon a serpent from her eye.

My BP's name is Curly after the three stooges. Before I got him my roommates already hade a ferret named Mo and a frog named Larry.
