Ok I just got my first bite... (DU WARNING)

Ok just moments ago I recieved my first bite from my newly aquired King Snake Isabella! (which is full grown!) When we first got her my sister was holding her for a little while before her settle in period. Well the snake attempted to slowly open its mouth and and snack on her breast. Well I wasn't so lucky. I had her around my neck and she was doing her "explorer" thing when I heard a sound (almost like someone chewing mashed potatoes with ther mouth open) and looked over to find her with her teeth dug into my shoulder! Well my first reaction is to get her off of me ofcourse! I didn't even feel it or know she was biteing me until I saw it! So I slowly attempt to grab her behind the neck and pull her off. BAM! Then it hit me.. I remember steve irwin saying that most snakes teeth are curved towards there throat so pulling wasn't going to get me anywhere! So I had to let her sit there and chew until I saw an opportunity to push and little forward then lift... both up and down...! Anyway she was put immediatly back in her tank. CAN SOMEONE EXPLAIN THIS BEHAVIOR?

It was isabella???? I thought it was the redtail..... OMG I knew she was tryin to bite me before....

Explain what could invoke the behavior... I know it's a snake and they bite lol but is there something that could has caused her to do this? Is it because she is a King Snake? Was she just bored? Is it common for ALL snakes to slowly open and just chomp..? I mean it couldn't have been a defensive bite... there was no strike. She ate 2 adult mice last friday... is she hungry. When I go near her tank she follows me and when I put my hand above it she rushes to the top to see what it is (and fast!).

i have noticed with the corns and kings i have owned that their metabolism is real high. it was costing me more on food each week trying to plump them up and keep them satisfied. i have had kings do that bite to me before for no apparent reason. maby it thought you were tasty?.

She got all of a sudden got hungry... lol.....

Yea i just bought a central american RTB with a tag labled "Little Nippy." I'm sure he/she can't wait to taste this!

LOL...the best part about that is you reacted to a sound and THEN found out you were being bitten...I mean, I usually FEEL it first....nice!

Oooh! I have been very lucky and have not been bitten and I am hoping that I never will!

2 of my 3 cali kings will occasionally casually bite me as you described.. slowly open the mouth and then calmly chew on me until they get bored. I think it's a king snake thing, really. :)

It seems so to me, too - the only snake I've ever been bitten by is a Cali King (my friend's) - I didn't even feel it either at first he went down my t-shirt and suddenly it was like WTH? something's irritating me down there ... and there was the little mouth clamped on my skin LOL. I just waited for him to realize I was a bit too big a meal for him :) I wasn't hurt - just my feelings :(

That's great! That explains it then. It is just part of the "King Snakes" nature. I did clean the rat cage right before I held her. But I also washed myself off before holding her. I don't think the rats had anything to do with it due to the location of the bite. This is what I needed though was for King Snake owners to speak up and let me know it the have encountered this same behavior. Thank you all very much for replying! It is much appreciated!

See this is never a good sign. They need to send you one for around your neck that says blood doner.

As far as the bite,ya sissy that isnt a bite lol:8: .When you get bitting by a retic then you will have a true bite experiance:P .As far as why she bit you,all i can say its a FEMALE you know they are moody majority of the time :fishslap: :twisted: :lmao: :lmao: .Now i will go hide as i am sure the FEMALES will be out for blood when they read this:P .:sabduel: :taz:

Hahaha - all I can say to that is I've got a MALE monitor and a MALE parrot - both as moody as a guy who can't find the remote :D

Thanks Audrey(sp), That tattoo is a Gargoyle. All of my other tattoos are colored so I had to get that one just because it was black & white shaded. I will send you a pic :P


I wasn't really posting the pics to show it off... I knot it's nothing lol. I was doing it more to show people what the extent of a full grown king snakes bite would be. You have to remember there is still a group of people here who have no recieved there first bites yet!

I've got a Black Headed Caique (there's a pic of him in my gallery drinking a bottle of beer ;) ) My caique I got him as a hand-reared baby and until he hit the age of 1 1/2 years he was sweet, docile and anyone could do anything with him. Then he hit the Hormonal Parrot Years :( Now I watch him like a hawk - he can be OK one day and not the next - but I can read his body language easily now. Greys are often pretty much one-person birds - a cousin has one and it loves him but hates his wife and kids :D

Just noticed you're Uk based too - in Devon - used to go there a LOT!
