Bedding

I've read the caresheets and like every other species, some are better than others.

I'd like to ask the members here who are experienced.....:bow: :worship:

The local feedstore knows that I'm getting more into reptiles.... hee hee and he's inherited an adult and some baby beardies.

The adult CAME with walnut shell bedding and he wanted "my" opinion. Huh? I don't have a CLUE, so thought I'd ask here and try the networking for him.... :D He wants to know if he can keep using the walnut shell or if he needs to do something different.

What are your suggestions for me to tell him? He's got what looks like sand in w/the babies, but wouldn't that subject them to the threat of impaction??? What about sand for the ADULT.

I Breed Beardies And For All Of Them I Use Sani-chips They Are Little Fine PINE Chips. Even If The Beardies Eat Them They Crap Them Right Out. And They Look Great. My Beardies Love To Dig In It.

sweety, sheck out the caresheet. it states wlnut shells can cause impaction. i personally would use papertowles for non-burrowing/digging lizards.

All I can go on is what I do with my one beardie. I kept him on paper towels while he was little and when he got some adult size on him, I put him on clean, sifted playsand.


I may consider switching to the sanichips as the sand can be so very dusty when cleaning.

I would think the Walnut shells would be ok but not sure. Hope you have better luck finding the info

Thx, but I have...that's what started the thread. I found a couple others online and they actually recommended the shells...that's why I was asking some of the members here what they'd suggest.

Looks like I'll be suggesting p towels / paper for the babies, and sand & aspen for the adult. :)

I have heard of walnut shells causing impaction. I would recommend calcium sand for babies to adults. I use it for my beardie. And every pet shop I have ever been to also uses calcium sand.

I've heard nothing but horror stories of complications caused by calcium sand. Anything recommended by a pet shop should be considered suspect. I realize there are the rare good pet stores who really care and know what they are talking about most times.....but they are indeed rare. So if "every pet shop" uses it.....then my bet is that they use it so they can sell it. Because anyone can go buy playsand at Home Depot for a few dollars per 50 pounds.

I used to use Yesterday's News from Purina. Petland, Petco, and Wegmans all carry it. It's the unscented kind I used. It is recycled balls of newspaper and it works great. Looks neat too. Baby Beardies should only be put on newspaper or paper towels though.

Calcium sand is one of the worse things ever created for reptiles. It causes impaction and is not digestable. I recommend you switch immediately.

Since when are pet stores doing anything right?

I got away from all the sand and walnut substates. I use only ceramic tiles. No worries about impaction, and easy to clean and sanitize. I also feed my beardy and mix of chopped greens and Pheonix worms.
