    My new Blood Python
This is my first Blood Python. I had the manager at this store "The Snake Pit" order him for me and he came in this morning. CB male Python Brongersmai. He is 18" long. It is a coincidence that I have only male snakes :O . These photos are taken with a poor-quality digital camera that just hooks up to the computer with a USB cable. The brightness in the middle is not from the flash (not that it has a flash), but from a spot bulb I used overhead. I hope you enjoy !

Oh, alright. I'll borrow a good camera from a relative and snap some nice photos of him. I just want him to settle in for a week or two. He should go through his 2nd shed by then.

Smulkin - These photos that you posted in one of my older threads really helped. I just purchased the book "The Living Pythons" and it went over this same method of identification, as well as supraoculars (brongersmai having 2, curtus and breitensteini having one), but it doesn't seem right (going by supraoculars)

    No suboculars

Is it really that red or does it just look really red in the pics???

And be careful they rank second for bad temperment. (first being retics...)

a real beauty you got there BoidFinatic, very nice chunky little guy. Be nice to see more pics if you can borrow that camera (hint hint )lol

and dont believe the nasty tag they get either I have yet to meet a real nasty bad tempered one including my own and I have met a fair few, all good tempered beasts when handled with care ;)

Of course as babies they can be incredibly jumpy like many other snake species more so than some but IMO they are more docile as adults on the whole than they are painted to be.

Kayla I wll have to politley dissagree Pal on the ranking of 2nd most bad tempered snake species :colbert: I must get on my Blood Python soap box ..lol what makes you say that if you dont mind me asking ?

I have had Ball Pythons with more attitude than my bloods , I really think they get a far worse rap than they deserve. I have encountered nasty Retics , Burmese , Balls , Boa's , Rat Snakes , and GTP,s a plenty but only ever encountered 1 bad tempered Blood and that was one that was rarely handled.

So not 2nd in my book by a long shot :) but that just my opinion others may be horrified with my comments if they have had really bad experiences :D

If fellow blood owners have some horror stories to back up the bad tempered tag they have I would be interested to hear about them :) as so far in the years I have worked with snakes and bloods in particular I have yet to see this.

A few weeks ago I held a hatchling blood at an expo in PA. It bit me 4 times in less than a minute without a motive. It would have its head resting on the back of my hand and then it would just sink its teeth in :O . One thing though....it was WC. I didn't buy that blood, not because he bit me, but because I don't support the whole WC thing.

My new blood is so gentle. Yesterday, I waved my hand in front of him repeatedly to see if he would be defensive and he just continued to smell the air :D .

    Thank you.

I was wondering what sub-species of bloods you have and how many?

your welcome, right now I have 4 males (Python Brongersmai) and 1 female. I sold 3 last year but eventually will end up with more again just right now space constraints prevent me. I have 3 males on loan.

They are a superb impressive snake I think.

I love my Borneo but rarely handle her. She has never bitten me, but she has struck through the cage (during feeding time). This past week I was one day late feeding her. I was getting ready to do so- took off the screen lid to her aquarium- when my dad decided he wanted to pick her up. Before my father and I moved in together (a couple of months ago) he had pretty much zero experience with snakes. He still doesn't have any now, other than holding a couple maybe once each. I was in the kitchen when I heard the scream, and walked into the living room to check it out. There was my dad, extremely startled and holding his wrist with his opposite hand. He told me the snake had bit him, and was rather offended by it, and showed me his battle scars. Four little bitty puncture wounds. I told him it was his fault because I was about to feed her, but I don't think he will be sticking his hand in her cage from now on.

My biggest surprise was how little damage she did. She's 4+ feet and hits med, lg, jumbo rats like a train. I think my dad was pretty lucky getting away with the extent of his injuries.

I still wouldn't put them in the top two, though.

Just a case of a hand being mistaken for food. When you do handle her, does she calm down after a little while or is she just nippy when rat is in the air?

    Re: My new Blood Python
As I said, I hardly ever handle her... now less than when I first got her. I am not afraid of her or anything, that is just how I take care of my snakes. The usual extent to her handling is this: It is feeding day, and I drop a live rat in her cage. She hits it immediately, and while she is constricting, I move her to the bathtub. While she is eating, I clean out her cage. When we are both finished, I pick her up out of the bathtub, put her over one or both of my shoulders as I talk to her and take her back to her tank and put her back in.

So, to answer your question... I can't really answer your question. :P She gives me no problems when I bring her back to her tank, but I do wait for her mouth to be occupied before I take her out. She would probably do okay if I wanted to take her out before it has already been 7 days since her last feeding. Maybe I will try it out soon to see how it goes.
