Heat Pads

What do you guys think about this?

I found this on a ball python site. Now I know "hot rocks" are bad, but everyone knows that one of the best methods of heating a cage is with a heat pad! Also could someone elaborate a little more on (POTZ), because I don't know what they are trying to say, that you can't use a heat pad to get the belly heat temp 10 degrees F higher than the ambient air!! What do you think?

I'd look at that person and go "huh???" Because I don't understand a word of what they just said.


For starters, they lump "reptiles" as all one group...as if they had identical heating requirements and identical methods of achieving those temperatures. LOTS of people say LOTS of weird things on the Internet. You have to learn to find the juicy bits of meat and throw the rest in the garbage, so to speak.

Also this is why we offer our snakes two hides a hot and cool. And why a thermal grandient (sp) is so important. This allows them to chose which temp they wish to be in.

Exactly what I was thinking. My brother just saw this site after I told him he needs a heat pad, and he was disagreeing with me, but here's proof. Thanks everyone!!

To update, I just got a exo terra heat pad 8"x8" to heat up a 20g glass tank. That was the only size they had, I also got a rheostat. This is all for my brother until he gets the money to buy some good stuff. So, my questions are: 1. How long does it take for UTH's to heat up? 2. Are you supposed to stick it directly on the cage, or should it heat the cage just fine from below? I dont want to stick it directly on the bottom of the cage because it makes it a pain to clean, so it's sitting about two inches below the cage. I've been watching it for the past hour and the temp is not rising!!

You have to take the paper off and stick it to the bottom on the outside of the tank.The box should show you the proper way to install it.When you clean the tank you only need to clean the inside where the snake is.You will not get heat under the tank unless its installed correctly.Also use the little rubber legs like as you need air flow under the tank or it could crack the glass if your reostat fails.
