How many friends did your snake have?
Well, one of my snakes pooped and peed. Well I went to go clean out her cage and I noticed some worm like things in her stool and water and all over her newspaper. I bagged them both up and took them ot the vet the next day. Well they did a fecal and my poor snake has 4 different types of internal parasites. She had Whip Worms, Ring Worms, Tape Worms and Round Worms. Since all of my snakes came in contact in one point in time I will be treating them all. It will cost me a total of around 100 dollars to treat 7 snakes but that price also in cludes a $42 dollar office charge, and 2 fecals at $16 a piece and the meds wich will be around $15-$20. I am not pleased but the price is not that bad. I switched vets and they are wonderful and alot cheaper then the other one. When your snake had internal parasites did they have 4 different kinds or more? Thank you for letting me rant on about all of this I just had to relieve my stress somewhere and I am open to opinions. Also when by biggest snake stopped eating is when I brung home two other ones and one of thsoe was the one with internal parasites. I hope she will start eating again once she gets treated so that she can breed this season. Thanxs again.

Re: How many friends did your snake have?
Kashmire had three types of parasites when he was tested. It only cost me $2.50 per dose of Panacur (2 doses).

Re: How many friends did your snake have?
What type of origin does the sick snake have?
-
Re: How many friends did your snake have?
I'm not sure how internal parasites travel from one snake to another unless they were in the same enclosure or otherwise somehow exposed to each other's waste. Regardless though....it's a good lesson on putting all new animals through strict quarantine procedures.
Good luck with it, Andre.

Re: How many friends did your snake have?
That was a good catch on your part. Me and Adam just had a long talk about inspecting snake poo to make sure every thing is kosher. More people need to do that on a regular basis

HAHA! Seeing you type "Snake poo" and looking at your Steve Irwin photo instantly made me think of him saying "By crickey! We got a glorious pile of snake poo!" Too bad I can't type in aussie accent that well. :(

Ummm... are you sure about all those? (ring worms, specifically) Ringworm is not actually a worm but a fungal infection. Forunately the others are easily treated. Best of luck treating everyone. :gj:

Re: How many friends did your snake have?
Sorry it wasnt a ring worm it was a hook worm. I am treating them all just to be sure nothing spread. Thank you everyone.

Re: How many friends did your snake have?
Ahhhh.... that makes much more sense. I thought that might have been the other one, as it is fairly common.
Luckily, the treatment is fairly easy. Good idea on treating the entire collection at one time. I'd also make sure to disinfect your cages as well. :gj:

Re: How many friends did your snake have?
How are your quarantine procedures? You say that all your snakes came in contact at one time or another. If you keep a strict quarantine for 60-90 days than you shouldn't have had these issues.

Re: How many friends did your snake have?
I hope your snake gets well. I believe if you feed live food the parasites will be alive too for 48hours after the death of the animal. Thats why if you freeze the food it'll kill all parasites(Another reason why I do p/k food anymore). I hope your snakes wont get any more parasites.

Snake parasites are completely different from rodent parasites. :)

Re: How many friends did your snake have?
Good luck with all that, and sorry to hear about your luck. Hopefully not all of them actually have parasites! My snakes never mingle just for fun...and I'm a freak about clean hands after working with or around an animal before moving to the next...not just anti-bacterial but that AND washing.

Re: How many friends did your snake have?
Well I was just using a 30 day quarantine. I say that they all have came in contact before because my mom plays with them to and she might have taken more than one out at a time like when I am at school. I have the chlorhexidine solution would that be good to disinfect all the cages?

If the food item has worms and tape worm it can transfer to the snake, right? Just like when humans eat worm and tapeworm infested food from other countries. But are you telling me tape worm cannot be transferred from the mouse to snake? Or do snakes not get worms this way?

Different species of tape worm. A human can get it from eating infected meat because we eat other mammals such as beef or pork. But if someone were to eat an infected snake, they would not contract the snake's tape worm. (ick!!!)
Parasites that need a warm-blooded environment to survive and grow will not find that in a snake's body. And vice-versa for reptilian parasites.

Re: How many friends did your snake have?
Oh I see! Hahaha! I thought there was only one type of tape worm, silly me.:groinkick :fishslap: Like the yucky things on animal planet off of Most Extreme.:tongue2:

I hate to be harsh with you Andre but we discussed this months ago. 30 days is not enough time to have new snakes quarantined. Additionally, you need to be extremely strict with your quarantine procedures. That means washing well after handling any quarantined animals, using antibacterial gel, using separate hides, feeding tongs, chlorhexidine spray bottles, etc. If you are going to breed snakes and want to be taken seriously and to actually be able to sell healthy, quality animals, now is the time to get this right. This time its apparently treatable parasites, next time you may not get so lucky.
