Shipping snakes UPS...
Okay so this Wednesday my new little snake will be shipped off and on his way to my house. This is the first snake I'll have shipped to me so I'm still a bit worried and not to sure how it's going to go.... The breeder said he will be shipping him UPS and that he will be here on Thursday by 10:30am because he will be set on "early AM drop off delivery". Has anyone had to wait all day long for their critter to get to them or has the drop off time been way off? I didn't even know UPS shipped live animals....
Yup, it's not even Wednesday/Thursday and I'm a mess!!!

When i ship snakes i have them delivered by 10:30 am next day.All but one shipment in two years of shipping has had a problem.I am not sure how UPS has there delivery stuff, but with fedex the drivers are penilized if a delivery is late.In other words if it says by 10:30 am that driver had better get it their. Some of the older people who have been shipping for years used UPS before they changed there rules. So they are considered Grandfather claused into the allowing them to still ship thru UPS.Once you get the package tracking numbers you can go online and moniter the progress of the package.Keep us posted and we need to see pics of your new addition ;)

Are you one of these "older" people? :D

Re: Shipping snakes UPS...
I'm sure your little guy will be fine. Just make sure you keep track of him online. I don't want to worry you, but I had my blood shipped to VA beach by mistake, and that UPS building was closed. I had to bribe someone to stay late while I drove 3 1/2 hours to get there.

I will only ship M-W, that way if something like that happens, the snake has no chance of spending the weekend in a box with a possible bad outcome.

Re: Shipping snakes UPS...

Ok ok...I am sure you did. Let me rephrase. I would never ship a snake on a day other than M-W. I would just wait it out for the right temps. Even with a Saturday delivery, you still risk the delivery being missed and the snake getting stuck in the box for an extra day.

Yeah this guy will only ship out when the temps are good and only though m-w also.
I also have told this guy my address like 5 times and it is correct on my paypay account sooo hopefully I won't have a problem....
*crosses fingers*
Okay another dumb question....
I know the snake will be in a box that will be tightly packed. How in the world do they not suffocate???

Is a frog's arse watertight? Well, maybe...But a box with a snake in it isn't. The snake is in a breathable cotton bag, and its nearly impossible to seal up a box enough to keep air from coming in. Also, snakes need a lot less oxygen than us humanoids..

Re: Shipping snakes UPS...
I don't think UPS knowingly ships animals. I think Fed Ex is the only carrier that does snakes? Am I right on this? And then you need to be certified to do so?

UPS policies on live animals (as Joe mentioned, they used to allow snakes and anyone who was certified to ship snakes to them was grandfathered in when the rules changed):
Shipping Live Animals
UPS provides service on a limited basis for packages containing some types of live animals. The term "animal" as used herein refers to anything living, except plants. While the list of "Accepted Live Animals" provided herein is an exhaustive list of animals that can be offered for transportation in accordance with the conditions listed, the list of "Prohibited Live Animals" is only a partial list of animals provided to clarify specific species that are not accepted for transportation and may not be shipped via UPS. Any animal not specifically listed on the "Accepted Live Animals" list is prohibited by UPS and will not be accepted for transportation.
Packages containing live animals must be prepared in accordance with the requirements as specifically stated herein. Packages containing live animals must provide for the basic humane care and safety of the animal during transportation. Any package containing a live animal shall be considered a perishable commodity and will be accepted for transportation solely at the shipper’s risk for any damage or loss arising from the perishable nature of the item. UPS shall not be liable for any special, incidental, or consequential damages.
In the event a package containing a prohibited item is found en route or in the UPS system, that package will be stopped at the location or UPS facility of the discovery. UPS reserves the right to dispose of the package. http://www.ups.com/img/1.gif

Endangered or Threatened Species
In addition to the Prohibited Live Animals list provided here, any live animal that is an Endangered Species is prohibited by UPS and will not be accepted for transportation. Shippers must refer to the list posted on the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Web site, and the Endangered and Threatened Wildlife and Plants 50 CFR 17.11 and 17.12, December 1999 (pdf file). http://www.ups.com/img/1.gif

Service Type
Live animals will only be accepted for transportation when shipped via UPS Next Day Air service, and such shipments will only be accepted Monday through Thursday. http://www.ups.com/img/1.gif

Packaging
Design and Construction of the Primary Container: All live animals offered for transportation must be in a new box. Corrugated boxes must be constructed of a minimum of 275 # bursting strength corrugated or 44 edge crush test. It is recommended that any package containing animals requiring moisture during transportation be constructed of water-resistant material such as wax coated, wax impregnated, or plastic corrugated. Minimal ventilation holes should be provided as necessary.
Internal Packaging and Other Considerations: Internal packaging materials must be used based on the characteristics of the animal, taking into consideration the necessary humane care for the animal while in transportation. Lizards and geckos should be individually contained in bags constructed of breathable material, such as burlap. Insects should be contained in individual primary containers such as plastic jars with ventilation. Fish must be double bagged in strong plastic bags with a minimum thickness of 4 mils. Each primary bag should be approximately one third full of water with the remainder filled with oxygen.
Package Testing: Any packaging used or developed to transport animals should be submitted to an International Safe Transit Association (ISTA) certified package testing laboratory for pre-shipment testing in accordance with ISTA Procedure 3A before being offered for transportation.
Additional Considerations: Additional components such as food, moisture, and temperature controls should be added as necessary to provide a safe environment during transportation. Additional dunnage should be added to prevent movement of the primary containers or receptacles within the outer box. http://www.ups.com/img/1.gif
