Parents just don't understand...
...but sometimes, neither do owners!
Her temps are right-on; not a mite or tick in sight; I tore her whole cage down today to see, but nope. I removed her, bowl and all, to do so, and took a pic; why the heck has she turned into the Bathing Beauty?

Re: Parents just don't understand...
She is indeed a bathing beauty!:P
But maybe there is something wrong with humdity, or temps too hot in tank (have a cool side and warm side) and also, she may be about to shed. But according to how bright she looks, I wouldn't think so. Sometime its hard to tell when my snake is about to shed. He is so dark in the first place, I just have to watch when it looks like air pockets are under his skin. Some snakes just love water. But sometimes you will not see the red little mites that come out to feast on your babe. So what yo umust do is, disinfect everything in your cage and clean it all out, and wash and CLEAN everything nook and kranny in the cage. Wash all her hides with HOT soapy water same goes for water dish and everything else you have in there. The red bird mite sometimes goes on mammals and other animals and will only come out at night. But to catch this predator put a white towel inside the cage at night and by morning take the towel and hold it up to the light and look to see red small dots. Believe me they are small. Good luck :P

Re: Parents just don't understand...
You say your temps and everything are perfect, but what are they? How are you measuring temps? My friend's baby BCI stayed in the water bowl for the first week he had it. Throughout that time, he never once took my advice to get an Accurite bc he insisted his cheapo zoo-med analog thermometers and hygrometers were okay. Needless to say, when I brough my Accurite over and showed him differently, he went and bought one that night.

Re: Parents just don't understand...
It isn't the temps; everything I do w/ temps is in accordance with the caresheet no this site. I measure with an accurite digi thermometer; it's wireless so the probe just sits in the cage and is pretty nonobtrusive.
Now maybe a rise in humidity is on order; I always play it by ear for humidity, raising it to very humid when they're in a shed cycle, and I never have shed problems at all. But I am always leary about humidity on a day-to-day basis, since I fear belly rot.. but I always spray lightly in the morning and evening.
Freakie; she has not been with a male as of yet; but I do want to breed her this November.

Re: Parents just don't understand...
Hey Jen....where'd you get a cordless acurite? I'd love to have some of those!
Wish I could help on the soaking thing, but none of the "standard" reasons seem to apply. :confuzd:

I got it at Tractor Supply; nto sure if there are any in your area. It was in the lawn/garden section. I will try and get a pic; I used it in our incubator last season, if you remember those pics, the sensor thingie is white and oddly about the size of a BP egg :)
She ate last night; a nice sized female rat. This morning, the soaking was being done. But I am glad to say, without my prodding, she has gone into her warm hide now. :)

There's your reason for soaking! Sometimes when they eat a meal that is a little too large they soak to try to ease the pressure. No worries!

Re: Parents just don't understand...
Wow; I never in a million years thought of that...!
The rat was a tad on the large size; nothing too big for her, but.. ::major cringe:: I had to go to.. ::cringes again:: Petco to get a few, since mine are not up to size yet.. laid out $15 for rats when that's what I spend per month to feed my rat colony!

Yep! It happens...Glad all is well! I had to go to Petco the other day and their entire rat tank looked terrible. There was a sign that said "under observation, not for sale". All the rats had their eyes half closed and were sneezing. Terrible place...

Yikes; these rats looked very healthy, at this Petco.. they go all-out and use Carefresh bedding, and seperate the sexes; it is even better than the local, family-owned store that I would usually go to (but sorry, I am sick of getting rats with orange lice things on them.. if that ever got into my colony...) But yeah, I hate buying rats for feeders, on principal; it is almost like admitting I didn't keep enough rats to grow to a good size to feed; and i hate admitting failure!

I have years of experience (as a customer at many stores and as an employee) with Petco and for the most part they do a poor job. However, some of them do have really great employees that care about the animals and don't get hamstrung by crappy corporate policies.
