This one stuck a nerve,
Mods, feel free to move to a more appropriate place on the forums if you feel it needed.
This one is just too much for me to handle this week, it's a bit disturbing to say the least.
First let me post a picture of a beautiful Northern Water snake Mike and I pulled out of a river (released of course after photo opt)
https://ball-pythons.net/gallery/fil...GayCity035.jpg
Beautiful I'd say, love his colors.
Well get a good look because apperantly when a bunch of ignorant fools get a hold of one in the city none the less bad things happen.
Sorry it will be a fuzzy shot:
https://ball-pythons.net/gallery/fil...GayCity067.jpg
This is a full grown Northern Water Snake that was brought in by Animal Contol Officer out of Hartford, CT (the capital). He was cruising through an apartment complex parking lot, trying to get back to his waterway....
A bunch of teens and young adults proceeded to throw rocks at him (fracturing his spine in multiple places) and then douced him with gasoline and car oil. right before they lit the match the cops showed and we got the call.
I am at a loss for words. Ignorance is a sad sad thing. There's only so long that I can keep my eyes closed before I get smacked in the face.
I am just livid (as I am sure you can tell by my post). I am just seriosly bothered by this case. (That doesn't happen to often).
Anyhow just thought I'd share. Remember guys education is key.
Hopefully if people knew this snake was harmless he'd be happy and healthy to this day, hopefully.

Re: This one stuck a nerve,
Ignorance is the number one killer of reptiles......that is so sad.
Rusty...I guess with any rescue operation...some horrible sights and acts are bound to be encountered along the way....But if I were in your place, I would have lost it along time ago...I don't know how you handle it....you have my respect for what you do...God Bless.

Re: This one stuck a nerve,
Now that is just totaly wrong:mad: .I assist the local police when they get call concerning reptiles. The last time i received a call i arrived at the house just in time as they were getting ready to kill a juvy black rat snake:mad: .Well i educated them about snakes and how he was more scared of them then anything.I told them to call me directly anytime they need assistance and hopefully they listened to me.I hope you are able to rehab him and are able to release him in a safe area.Keep us posted please.

Good thing I wasn't around those kids ;) Who wants some charred dumbs**ts! :D

Re: This one stuck a nerve,
That is just unbelievable. I always say, "never underestimate the power of ignorant people in large groups."
What is it, that makes a group of young people act like that? If it were one kid walking down a street, and he saw a snake like that, I think it'd be very unlikely that this would have happened; unless he was a really depraved psycho. But I can just picture it; one lowlife starts it, and others chime in.. completely horrifying if you ask me.
Is the snake still alive? it is hard to tell from the pic. At any rate, I admire you Rusty, for all the good that you do to these poor creatures.

Re: This one stuck a nerve,
That just made me want to cry. I can't believe people and the horrible things they do! Poor poor snake! I hope those twits get their well earned & deserved karma one day!

Re: This one stuck a nerve,
I wish you the best of luck with him, and if he has to be put down, at least he is in the right hands when it happens. he has my heart and my healing vibes heading his way. please keep us posted. :grouphug:

Re: This one stuck a nerve,
I will never understand animal cruelty... I read something recently where a bunch of teens did the same thing to a snapping turtle (I believe) they found... set him on fire and filmed it, thought it was funny... Never never understand what is wrong with these people... :tears:
-
Re: This one stuck a nerve,
That poor snake. May he at least be comfortable. I hear that 80% of murderers, rapists, child abusers, etc were juvs/teens that abused and tortured animals...how very sad. I just don't have the willpower to hold back my reaction topeople like that...sorry, but I'm goin with like what the big V-Man said...:sniff:

Re: This one stuck a nerve,
Ignorance, evilness, and plain EVILness is the things to animal deaths. This is soo sad.. I sometimes just cannot stand humans (the evil ones) What is our once beautiful planet becomming? Soon the world will be only populated with MAN... especailly at the rate we're going....

Re: This one stuck a nerve,
There was a story out here in LA about these teens setting 2 golden lab puppies on fire, and people saw the puppies running down the street screaming. I'm not a violent guy, and what I'm about to say I regret doing, but couldn't contain my anger. I saw a kid 2 blocks from my house beating this german sheppard with a skate board. He was clobbering him in the head, and I walked up behind the kid, and grabbed him by the neck and threw him into the wall and slammed his head into the concrete wall. I asked him where he lives, and I dragged him to his house. His parents were beyond enraged with what he did. I showed the parents the dog who was sitting by a car with blood on his face, and his eye severely swollen, to the point the dog couldn't even open it. I went back a few days later to apologize to the kid and parents what I did to their son, and they said they would have done the same thing if they were me. I still regret what I did to that kid, but this poor animal was screaming and was wobbling around from being dazed.

Re: This one stuck a nerve,
Some times People need to learn the hard way. when I was 5 my friend and I were grabing the tails of her goats and pulling them around. We both had long har in brades and her mother grabed us and swong us around by our hair. I fully remember what she said to me like it just happened. "You think pulling their tails was fun?! how do you like being drug around by your brades?! HURTS HUH!!" If it wasnt for her I wouldnt have understood what I was doing.

I agree, here, here. That is how I would roll.....
On to the snake, (sorry for the initial venting session)
He is still alive, Mike and I just got back from the vet. His third trip in. He has some pretty narly abrasions and abcesess but he is perking up quite a bit. I think if I have to wash him anymore I'm going to chap my hands. At this point he just needs a good healthy shed. Either way he is on antibiotics and he is moving around more and more each day.
We recieved a distress call about four hours ago. Eastern Box Turtle hit by car.
I am choosing not to chow pictures as it is very, very graphic to say the least. I think I should spare you guys. Anyhow we brought her in and sadly had to euthanize her.
We also had to check her for eggs as she seemed pretty big. I don't know their egg cycle off the top of my head, so once she had gone peacefully we checked, but a no go. May she rest in peace the poor girl.
I'll keep you guys updated on the water snake.

Re: This one stuck a nerve,
I'm sorry to hear about the snake. People can be so mean sometimes (especially to animals) I once saw a car purposely swerve to hit a squirrel crossing the road. I was walking by and sat down astonished. There are those times that surprise me too.....I was driving on a busy road and traffic had come to a halt. I found out that a squirrel ran under someones car and he stopped both lanes (going N and S) to get the lillte guy to safety.

Re: This one stuck a nerve,
this is y i am soooo happy they made harming animals and animal cruelty a felony in most states.... really sad to hear that happen to the lil guy :(

Re: This one stuck a nerve,
i dont think this is as much ignorance as it is cruelty. nabout a year ago i was skateboarding on my driveway minding my own buisness when i hear 2 5 graders saying "yeah kick him!" and other comments. i then walk over and see them kicking a water snake on a front tire of there tire spokes. i immediately asked them why they were killing it and they said"it crawlled in their tire spoke when they were riding bikes and thought it was a cottonmouth.i grabbed both by their ears and dragged them to my house(about 20 feet away) and interrogated them(lol). one of the 5 graders went field herping with me once and i gave him a guide to all fl snakes. an hour later(lol again) both kids tell me that they knew it was a watersnake and they were handling it for 5 minutes and then got bored with it and decided to kill it.

Re: This one stuck a nerve,
The cruelty of people never ceases to depress me. When I was about 13, we were up at my dad's gun-club cabin. We drove over to Rushford Lake, and the adults were off doing something (think peeing, hehe).. well there were these 2 boys who were looking at something. My best friend and I went over to see, and it turns out they'd found a garter snake who had a toad in its mouth. They had removed the toad and were sticking a firecracker into the snake's mouth, and had matches in their hands to light it. I completely went off on them; not something I usually did, being a shy kid and all; I hurled myself at them, grabbed the snake before they could even get the firework in there, and tossed it into some bushes..
it makes me shudder to think, what was going through these psycho's heads.
V-it's pretty cool that you saved that poor dog.. something I would definately intervene on if I saw it happening. :(
And Rusty, I send all of my most positive thoughts and wishes to you and your new rescue case there. I hope he pulls through.

I dont blame you one bit ,anything like that would send me over the edge too , hopefully that kid will learn from what has happened

Re: This one stuck a nerve,
The sad thing is that people who hurt animals for pleasure are mentaly different than the rest of the world. I personaly knew a serial killer who killed his mother with a baseball bat and a butcher knife, took a 30-30 to two girls and wounded 13 other people in the process. He also had a habbit of setting dogs on fire and beating animals to death with clubs. Most killers I mean the realy messed up ones start off this way. This helps their brain deal with the act of taking a life with their bare hands. Its like a dieabetic not feeling the stick of the needle when they take a shot after so long they just grow accustome to the feeling.
Animal abuse
Its not a normal thing or a phase. Its a sign of severe under lying mental problems and needs addressing.
