    What do you do??
I bet this has been posted before but i thought since there seems to be a bunch of us newb's here it would be cool to find out what people do for jobs, and other hobbies other than herps.

I for instance am a Turtle Tracking field Assistant for an endangered turtle population project.
Other than herps i use to be big into pole vaulting, I play and make didgeridoos, and volunteer for Habitat for Humanity.

thats a little bit about me what about you all??

I just got a new job doing accounts payable for a company called Innovative Stone. I start on Monday, kinda excited. They're a granite importer and just recently got comissioned the memorial for the freedom tower in NYC.

Other hobbies include my RC Monster Truck that is quite fun and my bonsai that is slowly growing. Can't deny video games as another big hobby of mine when I can find the time.

Are didgeridoos those super cool aboriginee musical things that make weird zingy noises? lol.. so descriptive I know. I've always wanted one.

As for me.. I am a professional dog groomer. I get bit a lot more by dogs than I do by the 27 snakes in my care.. but, I love making dogs look pretty.

I am also an artist/photographer, a video game lover, and I'm also just a general animal nut. I keep mostly snakes and inverts, but I'm very interested in all kinds of animals.

I also ride horses (I have a thoroughbred gelding) mostly I like dressage, but I do lots of things with horses.

I also love sports cars (I'm going to buy a used corvette in the relatively near future) and someday I want to get my private pilot's license like my dad has.

I've got a lot of interests for sure!

It always amazes me how those guys are capable of circular breathing for extended periods of time when playing those things. Somehow my brain was never able to do breathing in and out at the same time.

I'm a full time student at OSU, going to graduate in Dec. with a major in English, Creative writing, and a minor in Aviation business. I also work two part time jobs totalling about 40-50 hours: one's at CVS/Pharmacy, the other is at Kuhn Honors and Scholars Center on campus (we do recruitment, incoming freshmen, that sorta thing). I also run a small sort of snake rescue/rehab, trying to get into breeding cresties---though that's on the backburner until I get more time and money.

I try to get out with my friends once or twice a week. I love going to the movies and going out to eat... just hanging out. Also like to play video games, computer games, read when I get a chance, and write every chance I get. Oh, I'm also a military jet nut! And a Buckeye nut! :P

Yea a didgeridoo is that wierd sounding aboriginal instrument, that just about everytime you hear the background to jeff corwin, there is a didge in there somewhere. Yea circular breathing is a tough concept it can take years for some, or minutes for others. The best way is using water and spitting it out, Spaniard, if you ever want more info it can be fun to learn, i use to spit water all over the place until it clicked!

I am not old enough yet to go to the academy, so I am working as a non-commisioned officer until I can go to the academy and become commissioned. I am in sort of a law-enforcement limbo.

Shelby - I love video gaming too - that's my other hobby apart from reptiles. My favorites are the Legacy of Kain series, Prince of Persia, Devil May Cry. And Jak & Daxter for fun :D

I am a fulltime student at NAU (Northern Arizona University) with a major in Psychology and a minor in Criminal Justice. I ultimately want to become a criminal psychologist/profiler. I also work part time at Hot Topic at the mall as a sales kid. I just got hired, but everyone that works there is totally cool, and as I mentioned in another thread, my manager has 5 BPs!

In my spare time I work on my ongoing musical project with my friend down in Mesa. Sort of corespondance jamming. I play the electric bass, electric and acoustic guitar, I can sing to some extent (both heavy metal and normal), and I'm also learning the tin whistle and the Bodhran (a celtic hand drum). I think that is everything.

I work for Radiant Systems, Inc. We manufacture Point Of Sale Solutions (computers, software, etc) for the Entertainment industry (movie theatres such as AMC use our outdoor kiosks where you can buy your tickets at the machine rather than the window), Hospitality (Chick-Filet, Dunkin Donuts, California Pizza Kitchen, Rubio's, etc all use our touch screens and back office solutions) and Convenience Stores (Sheetz, Exxon Mobile Malaysia, Shell Canada, Shell Europe) use our solutions as well.

I am a buyer and have a set of commodities that I purchase (last count I was responsible for about 1100 individual parts and there are five of us with about the same number of parts).

In my spare time I volunteer with Canine Assistants that trains service dogs for the physically disabled.

I'm a stay at home mom, but ironically I don't stay at home very much. I'm assisting with a reading program at my son's 1st grade class, coaching my daughter's soccer team, mentoring my son's sunday school class, assisting with the cub scouts, and not to mention all the chauffering, laundry, and general grunt work. ;)

Before all that, I worked as an Entomology lab manager, wildlife rehab volunteer, and even as a vet tech. I whole-heartedly enjoy any work with animals.

I work as a software support analyst (phones! =P) but before that, I was in software development for the same company. Will have been there 12 years next month.

Wedding planning rules my life at the moment and destroys my sleep most nights...can't wait til this planning crap is done (wedding is next month).

Other than that, Rick and I play computer games (currently Battle for Middle Earth 2), I used to quilt (Carmen's cage is now on my quilting table, so hard to quilt these days) and before that I did community theatre costuming (got tired of the slavery).

I am a computer dweeb. I am currently working for Information Builders as a Quality Assurance Analyst, but I have run the full gambit of the Software industry - programmer, application developer, consultant, QA, Network Administrator (hardware), product management and MIS manager -- everything but sales.

However, I did spend two years working at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, working mostly with Cats, Dogs, Rhesus Monkies and Rabbits. Other people worked with Rats and mice. We did not work with snakes or spiders of any kind (although I did hear the occasional "gee it would be good if we had a spider to try that out on"). Yes, I am one of those EVIL laboratory research analysts that did experiments with animals. I think that it is better than testing on humans, although my sergeant wanted to use death row inmates to test on.

Before I was an Army Lab Tech, I was an Attack Helicopter Repairman & Crewchief, and also a Cavalry Scout Team Leader -- I had fun on the Korean DMZ and in Germany.

My wife is responsible for our getting our first snake. She has been asking for one for years. I always balked until we went to my daughter's sleep-away camp for visitors day. They had a beautiful 5' boa and I got to hold it -- sold me on a snake as a pet immediately!

    edited --

I forgot, for fun I am a serious D&D player and Game Master -- two nights a week!

I can shop all day, even if I don't end up buying anything. I love fashion, I love looking good, and I LOVE sales.

And no, I was not a coder. I did everything else; testing, bug tracking, interfacing with other humans since coders lack that ability, UI design, presentations, doc writing, interfaced hardware manufacturers, etc.

I'm a stay-at-home Mom, with all the multitude of hats that that entails. I like computer games...but not a lot of them. I have a tendency to get hooked on one game and play it for a LONG time before finally moving on to something else. I love to read, and will read just about anything except hard-core horror and romance.

This past year, I did volunteer work with Team In Training, which is an organization that raises money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and is the largest endurance-sport training organization in the world. I trained for a 100 mile bike ride one season, and supported the cycle team the next season. Because our military life is in serious flux this season, my TNT efforts are on hold, but I do plan on picking it up again next year and am eager to start training again myself.

:) Happy to provide details. My hubby is an officer in the AF. We've been in for 16 years. He just pinned on Lt. Col. I'm SO proud of him!!!

The "flux" part was that he was supposed to deploy this fall...and that date got changed multiple times....and then suddenly they tell him "Oh, there's a command job opened up in San Antonio, so you have to take that and PCS this fall..." But we don't have orders yet....and he still may get a short deployment before we PCS. Driving me NUTS at the moment to not be able to plan or count on anything for the next few months! :rolleye2:

    Re: What do you do??
Tack another one up for what the general population calls "computer guy". I've had my hands into just about every aspect of technology there is to be dealt with in public education. I'm 26 and have been serving in the technology field of public education for almost 10 years. Yes that would put me starting out as an employee of the high school I graduated from at the same time I was a student. My last district I was the technology Director for 3 yrs before the people managing money where found not to be doing that so well so there where alot of cuts :( Right now I'm with a great ISD and responsible for the technology needs and support for two specialized schools. One is an all special education school and the other is a career technical center (trades school), both have students coming from all over the county encompasing 12 local public school districts, as well as charter and non-public area students. Its quite a large are of west MI we cover. We are also progressing on what has become a long and difficult (political) project of building up a stronger fiber network not just for the schools in our region, but 911 services, as well as being a major POP that will tie into some of the other major POP's to provide faster more direct routing.

Oh I almost forgot my personal business! As some of you know I also do web hosting...I am big on the fact that I am not reseller of some data warehouse I've never seen before. I build my own web servers, I manage them, I configure them, I set you up and provide all the support personally.

My herps aren't business, they are pleasure for sure, although I have done some buying and selling. That is not to say that those who can make a business out selling herps don't love what they do...we have plenty of examples here that paint a clear picture of both quality and love for animals.

    Re: What do you do??
My life is pretty boring as of now.:P

I currently work at a new aquatic shop in town (freshwater & saltwater livestock) as "livestock manager" which basically means that I do most of the ordering, tank cleaning, water changes, and general sales. Its not all bad as I love what I'm doing, and I love working with people. I do have to admit that I've heard, "Nemo, Nemo, Nemo!" one too many times, but I still like to see kids enthusiastic about fishkeeping. Being the only employee keeps me quite busy.

I did the college thing for roughly two years, few more credits to receive my AAS degree...however I'm taking a year or so off just to work. I started into college focusing on an advertising major, then switched to graphic design, and then business management... Basically being confused with what I would want to do with the rest of my life I decided to take some time off of school.

My dream job would still pertain to the similar avenue I'm working with now...however more of the custom setups for businesses/private aquariums working on tank design and fabrication, and filtration systems with acrylic. Also something along the lines of those fake decorations you would see in a public aquarium on a smaller scale. I just need to discover an avenue to study and learn about the business...and continue writing my business plan.

As to some of my interests and hobbies outside of work. I'm getting back into the gym scene, weightlifting is invigorating! I love keeping saltwater reefs, and conducting research. I'm the new VP of the Rochester Marine Aquarist Club, and moderator on a saltwater forum. My other loves are drawing/sketching, photography, reading, and fishing. I thoroughly enjoy reading about Eastern cultures and religions, with a current kick on Zen/Chinese Buddhism, Shintoism, Daoism, Meditation and the practice of Tai Chi. (In need of balance and peace:P ) I of course also love reptiles, mainly geckos...eventually I would love to work with some more pythons and boas, hopefully blackheads start coming down in price.

Just a little bit about me. Thanks for listening.

I've been in the Coast Guard for 15+ years...started as a Radioman, then Telecommunication Specialist, now Operations Specialist...Soon to be Intelligence Specialist...

For hobbies I paint (Oil/Alkyd), mountain bike, try to work out, I have an R/C 4x4 truck, love cars, hate yard work, love music, hate yard work, love fishing and outdoors stuff in general.

In less than 5 years I can retire from the CG and do what I truly believe I'd love to do....drive a beer truck...:D
