I got to figure out what's going on with my old man's snake.....ok he's in prison and i'm just feeding her and taking care of her for the first time.....so i've hcanged her atmosphere a little.....fed her on monday...not a big enough rat, but i dont' know....all I know is she's been out all day and I don't know what the deal is but that's not usually her style....so does she need a bigger rat or is she just more comfortable....but I was putting my hand in front of the tank and she was VERY responsive to the movements that I made....WHAT SHOULD I DO????!!!

Remember that "they can eat as big around as their thickest part"... Or close to. If you give a discription of her home? these guys'll help!:D

I fumbled around too... you'll get the hang! The BEST thing is to read the BP care sheet listed at the top of the "home" page..... or search for "feeding" :D;)

OK.....his mother had her on the main level of her house always 60 degress......Gypsi has a 55 gal tank.....well i just moved here and finally got a thermometer to detect temp and humidity....well it has been way too cold for her I think....so I moved her upstairs with me.....just moving her up there changed the temp to 75-85 degrees depending on the outside weather plus humidity of 45-55 jumping around...so I don't know....if she is just more comfortable? She's usually so docile I don't know what the deal is.......

If she was really kept in an environment that cold without any supplemental heat, then her sudden burst of activity could just be that she's finally feeling warmer and that gives them more energy for moving around and exploring their environment.

Try to bump the temperatures up a bit more. She really needs it to be ~92F on one side of the tank, and around 82F on the other. Typically, you don't want the temps to drop below 80.

Your humidity sounds fine for now.

Does she have anything to hide in?

Calm down and take a nice, deep breath. There's nothing wrong here that a little education and patience won't fix. The snake isn't "broken" and you haven't done anything wrong.

A small rat is plenty for her to eat. If she's a really BIG ball python, then when it's time to feed her again, you can try somthing a little bigger. But seriously...a single small rat offered every 7 days is just fine.

If you get a lamp to heat one end...just pick one. And make sure she has a similar hide on both the "warm" side of the tank and the "cool" side. That way she doesn't have to choose security over the proper temps.

well not her enclosure it'self but the location of it in the house....because it's not air conditioned upstairs.....so it's always 20 degrees warmer up there .

I can understand where you're coming from. Really, I can. Just realize that you don't have to suddenly know everything there is to know and fix everything perfectly all in one day. From what I've read so far, it seems like the snake has been in less-than-ideal conditions for quite some time now. You've already taken steps to make things better by moving it into a warmer room. That's a great thing!

Take your time and read through this:
    http://www.ball-pythons.net/modules....warticle&id=52

And then sit down and make a list of what you think you need to do in order to take care of her. Then make a plan for getting those things done one step at a time. You and she will be fine!

For now...just allow her to be active and explore. She's probably enjoying being warm enough to move around. Cleaning can wait another day or two until you're feeling more confident about what to do.

You say you fed her on Monday...as in yesterday? If so, then feeding her again so soon is not a good idea. Wait until next Monday. Also, if you just fed her yesterday, then the very best thing you can do for her is to leave her alone for another day or so...so she can fully digest her meal. Handling her within a day or two after feeding can cause her to regurge (throw up) her meal.

    Re: hi everyone!!
Do you have any pictures of your snake and her setup? It might help if you do.
Personally, I wouldn't feed her again so soon. I have one that likes to hang out on top of her hides a couple of days after feeding. I have no idea why she does it, but she always spends a couple of days a week like that.

    Re: hi everyone!!
Actually no it wouldn't have been monday because it's been over 48 hours since I fed her and that's the only reason I'm worried about handling her at this point....because she seems too alert...not like she usually is...so I'm scared the rat wasn't big enough and she's still hungry due to the fact I only got a small one and I usually give her a medium every 2 weeks.....but that was when her cage was colder.....

If it's been more than 48 hours...and you're truly worried about getting the cage cleaned out...then I would recommend going for it. When you reach for her, try not to approach her from the front of her face, but from behind. Don't hesitate...just pick her up. More likely than not, she'll calm down right away and either ball up, or want to explore your hands.

Once you get over that hurdle of fear, I think you'll feel a LOT better about taking care of her. ;)

Usually it's not this wierd to handle her....i haven't had any fear of her at all....but her responsiveness to my hand is very quick and that isn't like her...but then again she hasn't had a normal setup and for the first time someone (ME) is trying to straighten out her comfort....I just don't want to upset her....and get to know what she is really like.....but it's wierd I don't think anyone really knows her....she has never had a steady atmosphere really so I don't think she's ever really been herself for anyone.

Ya, I'm worried about that too....because I am getting her setup changed I'm wondering if she ever really had the right feeding schedule....actually she shed for the second time since JULY just the other day....I kinda thought that was pretty recent....but I'm not sure what the deal was with that.....however she shed well....and that was after I bathed her and got the humidity up....

ummm....like things have been the same....but it's my mother in-laws house...I just moved here....and moved Gypsi upstairs with me so that I can monitor her better....You know that's been the problem cause I haven't had the chance to get to know the snake yet...and everyone else did the best they could....but not good enough.....not researching and just figured feed her when she comes out and she'll live, but now I'm teaching them from my own research that she is a pet....needs special care....you know.....and not just stuffed in a cage and fed every now and then.
