Our fish tanks
Here're our tanks. First off is our bedroom tank, containing the huge Mega Fewd!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6.../broomtank.jpg
And Mega herself; all twelve inches of her!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...megafewd-2.jpg
Now for the kitchen tank; fancy goldfish and snails. My treasured albino is in the upper left corner :)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6.../kitchtank.jpg
And a closeup of some of its contents :)

And finally, Mark's tank, the GFfish tanks are really mine, but this is his artwork.. This tank is a hodgepodge of many thingsl a few snails, one Oscar (the biggest, gentlest giant out there), two plecos, four clawed frogs, a redfin cichlid and a livingstoni cichlid, two goldfish, an upside down cat and a chinese algae eater. No one ever gets damaged, bitten or killed, so it somehow works; it is Mark's pride and joy!

The White Thing, our awesome Oscar. Not aggressive at all.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...itething-1.jpg
Stealth Bomber, our 16 inch-long pleco.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...ive/plecoo.jpg
My redfin cichlid, One Eyed Jack. He has only one eye, was like that when we got him. Can also see our smaller pleco and MuuMuu, the female clawed frog.

Re: Our fish tanks
thanks; they are the most low-maintenance pets we have.

Re: Our fish tanks
What beautiful (and clean!) tanks. I love your cichlids.. as well as the goldfish. Do you think you'll ever try saltwater?
-
Re: Our fish tanks
I would like to, maybe down the road, get some sharks. :) I also like the puffer fish; my friend has some really nice setups with these guys. At this time I can't do much more for financial reasons; darn credit cards/car payment/rent!

Re: Our fish tanks
Awsome tanks you have there:) Speaking of puffers, there are freshwater puffies. They are about the size of pencil eraser and can move their eyes like a chameleon and are lighting fast. Pertsmart has there here for like 4 bucks this week..

Re: Our fish tanks
There are quite a few species of freshwater puffer. You're thinking of the dwarf puffer.. but there are big freshwater puffers too.

All of your money will be gone once you set up a reef. LOL.:D
The reefs are a 55 and a 75 soon to be combined into a 76 bowfront.

Try moving a 450 gallon across the state. 6 people and it was almost impossible to lift into the truck.:D Never gonna go that large again. A 220 is fine now.
If you do set up a reef, Aqua C makes some of the best skimmers on the market and at great prices. The spray injection works 10x better than the venturi and counter current types I used to run and you don't need to worry about them overflowing on you like some types do (that is a PITA).

Figure a good ball park figure for setting up a reef tank is $25-$30 per gallon, so for example, if you set up the 110 you just bought, it would cost between $2,750 and $3,300 for the live rock, live sand, corals, lighting, pumps, fish, powerheads, and skimmer to get it running.
Then there is the monthly expense such as the supplements and salt mix to keep it running.:D
Reefs are beautiful but man you would not believe the amount of cash I have gone thru over the years.:O
One word of advice.
NEVER get a damsel. No matter how pretty they look, how cheap they are, or how much BS the LFS tries to give you. Damsels are EVIL. Once they are in a reef tank, they are almost impossible to remove without dismantling the tank and they will harrass and attack the other fish. Damsels are EXTREMELY agressive and territorial.
If they got any larger they would make a great white shark look timid. That's how nasty they can be.
They don't call one type "blue devils" for nothing.:D

Re: Our fish tanks
Hehe.. yes damsels are evil. I love them though.. garibaldis are awesome.

Wow..lol.. My LFS told me about 500 bucks for the live rock and sand.. I am liking ciclids more and more..lol One good thing is I get all the supplies at wholesale.. I just picked up an ehiem pro 3 for the 110, should do the trick:)
Maybe Ill do a 55 or 75 for a reef. If I do it look for some PM's Steve..lol

Yes but garibaldis are cool water a lot more expensive than typical damsels and get huge. Not a reef tank type of fish.
I was speaking more of the smaller damsels like blue devils and dominos.

Decent cured live rock (one that actually has living organisms) runs between $7-$10 per pound.
And live sand (again with living organisms in it) runs between $3-$5 per pound.
Eheim? Isn't that just a cannister filter? You should run a filter and a skimmer on a reef unless you want to go the plenum route. IMO, a sump would be the best way to go with a reef.
PM's are OK. I'd be glad to help you spend your money. LOL.:D

Re: Our fish tanks
True.. I just was thinking of damsels in general. Clownfish are little nasties too.. but they're considered damsels as well if I remember correctly.

Yes but they don't harass fish nearly as much as the other types.
They are little pissers though. My occellaris will take bites out of the sponge while cleaning the tank.
Big attitude in a small package. LOL. They are very bold little fish. :D

Re: Our fish tanks
Yes they are.. spunky little guys. The gold stripe premnas biaculeatus is my favorite I think.
I also think we've hijacked this thread. I don't know anyone offline that is interested in marine animals.. so I guess I just get chatty. lol
-
Re: Our fish tanks
That's OK; lol :)
I don't really know many people offline who are into tanks, period. Most people give me the classic line "oh, I had fish before, but they all died "etc. Don't know a darned thing about cycling, etc.. yipes! At least you people are worth your salt in the fish department (no pun intended lol.)
Gotta love those fishies!

Re: Our fish tanks
Since I work at petsmart I've got a few friends there that keep cichlids and some south american tropicals.. there are a few fish lovers there, but not many.
