    Question about hets....
I bought my ball python from a guy who I didn't know at the time, but now we are pretty good friends. Today while having coffee and talking about snakes and breeding, etc... he confessed to me that Sebastian has about a 95% chance of being a piebald het. :O I was shocked! He said he wasn't going to tell me that when I bought him because he didn't think I'd know what it was, or care, and that he didn't know me like that, etc.

So now my question is.. is there any way to tell that he is a het? Because another one of my friends said they have certin markings or something like that? Is that right? :confuzd:

That would be awesome if he is a piebald het!

No, there is no way to tell if he's a het unless you were to breed him to a female that was either 100% het pied or homozygous pied and produced pieds.

I believe the only way to really tell would be to breed him and see what happens. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

She said that he said that he was 95% sure it was a het, not that it was a 95% het.

I say find someone with a het female and make a deal to breed them together. By doing that you won't need to spend the money on a het female. Either that or buy a het female and breed them.

Thanks Brian. I know he has female hets, and I know his boss has some too. So I could always buy a female het or ask him to pair him up to some one when the time comes.

The best way to make sure you have a Het of any % is to buy from a breeder that knows what they are doing. A breeder that is unsure if the animal he sold you is het means that he really is more than likely guessing. Grow him up and breed him to a het or Homo and see what you get

Yup this guy is a breeder who also works for Peter Kahl, so I'd like to think he knows what he is doing & talking about!

    Re: Question about hets....
Okay so I asked my friend what % of het he was considered and this is what I got back...
"As far as % of het he is considered 50% het but w/ indicating markers which we have proven out to be all most definate het. I thought you would appreciate knowing since you are into the animals as much as I am."

Nice to learn something about hets, today.

    Re: Question about hets....
Being a 50% het, that would mean that it was from a het to normal breeding. het to het gives you 66%, and homozygous to normal, or homo to het gives you 100% hets.

Hope this helps you learn something MORE about hets today :)
