    Keep the heat up!
OK, so I switched to the digital thermometer/humidity gauge from the regular one. Now the temp says it's about five degrees cooler on both ends. I have a heat lamp that I use. I'm not switching to a UTH so don't mention it. I'm using an infrared light for heat. Is there a better bulb to use? Like a ceramic one, for more heat? The lamp is graded up to 75 watts. I've got the "probe" under his hide. and the readout on the cool side. HELP!

What's wrong with a good UTH? Maybe you should try a higher watt?

well..nothing really wrong with a UTH, but i already spent a good amount of $$$ on the lamps because the pet store lady told me they were better (and thats what she used for her boas). I also met someone who used one for her burm. I wouldn't mind getting the UTH's but what am i gonna do with these two lamps i bought?

I suppose a higher watt might help...

I hope you aren't using a glass tank, it will be extremely hard to get humidity up with only a bulb. You really should use a UTH because BP's need belly heat (especially to digest properly). I would reconsider and they cost less than a CHE.

Shaffer, two sets of key words here."Pet store lady" and "SHE uses for her BOAS".Whats good for boas might not work for ball pythons.Of course the pet store is going to sell you the stuff that costs more money. You should have researched here before you wasted your money.Next you will be having problems with your humidity being to low, because the lights will keep the air drier. Not trying to be rude here just honest;) .

<~~ feels like a 16 year old with a new license that just stayed out after curfew... sorry dad...lol

So i will purchase a UTH, and yes I am using a glass tank... Things I should have asked about before purchasing... but I didn't find this site until after my first purchase... so... do i just put the UTH under the tank? One of my tanks is one a wooden dresser, the other is on a plastic shelving unit. do they (UTH's) get hot enough to where i need to worry about a fire or melting plastic?

Under the tank, and make sure to get a thermostat.

I followed the guide about covering the top with foil and duct tape, so it seemed to be working right...

You are not grounded this time :P .If you use a UTH get a thermostate to control the heat output. When you buy the UTH it has 4 rubber like feet you place at each end of the tank, this keeps a air flow so it does not crack the tank.

If it was me i would take them back to the pet store lady and tell her she lied to you;) .This of course would be a waste of time i am sure. You could use them in the winter if the room the snake is in gets to cold, not sure where you live  .As long as you het a UTH that will cover at least 1/2 of the tank floor and use a thermostat it should provide enough belly heat for your snake.

what size do you reccomendfpr a 20gal-long? it says at petco.com to use the small one, but it doesn't look like it would cover half the tank, should i step up to the medium sized?

I have used both the 8x8 and the 10 1/2 x 11 for 20 longs i have.As long as you have a thermostat both work fine.

Don't lose the lamps yet! Do the UTH and see where your temps are. The room I keep my snakes in is cooler so I have to run both (UTH during day and UTH and bulbs at night). I have my bulbs on a timer so they kick on in the evening (Red bulbs IR). If temps are fine with just the UTH then see if you can return the lamps.

    Peace!!
