A CHAT ROOM!!!! really, i think it would be great to talk live and ask for help. who agrees with me?

We already have chat. We usually do it once every week or so. However, we do not keep it up in running all the time.

then we need a constant chat! my pole is for whoever wants a constant one

What is your reasoning for a constant chat session to take place?

Information shared during chat is gone once chat is finished....however, information shared across the forum is left for everyone to view.

Also, since we strive to be a 'family-friendly' forum. Having a 24-7 chat room would require constant moderation of the chatroom because we do not want inappropriate behavior to take place on this site. That is alot of extra work to ask of the Admins and Mods since we all run this site with our spare time.

i'm here 24/7..i'll do it :D

but we all get closer if we can chat, all my close friends are so close because we chatted. moderation problem is solved, make us all mods!......j/k just make it so only registered users of the forum can chat there, and if any user mis behaves gooder users can report them.

yeah i have some input on this...Chat technology is pretty advanced...put a "bot" in that monitors it for potty mouths. That bot will control the entire room so noone else becomes mod/admin of the room.

Yeah this place is already a family friendly place, and 99.9% of the ppl who come here and interact are family friendly people in the first place....i don't see it getting out of hand....and when I am usually here, there are always mods/admins online.

its a so so idea. It would be very nice!! I know someone who owns a family friendsly forum and has a 24/7 chat and it is very very close to this one!!

We do appreciate that you would like a chat room that is constant, however, we do not offer that as of this time, nor do we anticipate offering that.. due to the time constraints and bandwidth issues that a constant chat room would cause. We feel it is more benefical to this site and those who particpate here that the forums be used as intended, and leave the chat room for when it is open for plenty of fun.

I like the idea of a constant chat room. I might be able to host a bot.

We also list instant messager user names (in the profiles - if info provided) for those who would like to chat anytime. ;) Feel free to also search as there are a couple threads listing usernames as well. :gj:

If any of you would like to chat outside of this sites chat times, you are free to chat in AIM, which you can start a chat room in, or another service that offers that.

I like our weekly chats, and many times there aren't many people in those...so I don't see a daily open chat being warranted, like said before AIM, MSN, Yahoo messenger work fine for that.

What we could do (up to you mods) without harming the bandwidth of the site is to start an IRC channel. #BallPythons on DALnet is unregistered (It doesn't exist). I could register that channel, and we could make it the BP.net 24hours chatroom? IRC is something I'm on a LOT of the time, we could get channel operators to work in shifts and a bot.

I don't know if it's been mentioned but maybe the chat should be the same day and time everyweek. I think more people would make it a priority to chat when they know it's already programed.

Yes I agree with that Emilio...i don't ever know when the chats are so i'm never there.

We could not really support that - of course nor could we prevent it. What gave us pause in doing somethign similar is the lack of an integrated user db - anyone could sign on appearing as whatever username they wanted to. IRC also has some potential risks in terms of malicious code, vulnerabilities etc which the uninitiated would tend to be quite prone to.

Of course everyone here is free to pursue chat in any form they want to outside of the site be it AIM, IRC, Ventrilo etc etc etc - but as far as something site sponsored or "official" (man that sounds officious lol) I think we'll tend to stick with the soluton it took so long to find.

If the bulk of help and communication moved offsite into chat I would not be concerned about stats or traffic or antyhing of that sort - but i do think it would be a loss not to have the exchanged advice etc available in a searchable database so others can access it at anytime.

I do not mean to sound so dissuasive - the subject comes up a few times a year and the merits and drawbacks have been laid out - and of course can be again.

Yeah, IRC can definitely be full of jerks and weird malicious stuff so it wouldn't be great for people who aren't computer-savvy. I'm not going to stage a rebellion or anything on you and I see where you're coming from on it. There are bots that save things in a database though. It is a possibility to archive the logs and make them searchable but it wold be a buttload of work to do.

Appreciate your understanding! We DO try to do as much as we can to make available those things folks suggest - and never blindly strike ideas down or anything of that sort. Staff is all-volunteer (shhh if they find out they arent getting paid we're screwed!) and the site is not for profit (any ad /store revenue goes right back into hosting - and when we can we bump so we can offer more gallery space etc). I think in the end though as a community effort the info generated and shared here is priceless - i know personally speaking there are few days that pass that I don't learn something new from you folks - and there is definitely a sense of a knit community here that makes every effort worthwhile.

I love being able to search for topics and talk to people here, I just don't want to talk TOO much and be seen as a post-hog or something. That's my main reason for liking chat really :)
