    GRRR..Some Snake Owners
So a new acquaintance of mine mentions she has 3 BP's. She also mentions that they have not eaten in "a couple of months". I say hey, I am about to get an order from my feeder breeder and am going in on a large order w/ a friend. How does .60 sound for Jumbo's? She says "oh yeah great". I place and pick up the order and a week goes by and she hasn't picked up so I deliver. What do I find? 3 BP's in a 40g, a 12yr old emaciated female, a 3yr old male and 4-5 yr old male. 1 basking lamp, no uth and 1 small hide! I didn't know what to say other than to ask health questions and gently suggest she seperate. She said she has no problems, "It works for me!". I asked if she was willing to sell or relocate the snakes temporarily until she got her finances in order. Her reply was "Why would I do that?" Grrr, I just had to share my irritation.:irkd:

Perhaps I am overreacting but :bolt: I wanna jack her house and take the snakes.

point her in this direction...you can say, in a nice manner, "this web site I go to all the time has some great caresheets for bp's...here's the link" and write it down on a piece of paper.

"It works for me"? Well, it obviously doesn't because your snakes won't eat!!!! I think maybe you should just tell her that in the herp community what she's doing is usually frowned upon and that it is a better idea to have them seperate, with two snug hides each, a water bowl and a heat mat with a thermostat. Sorry if I sound really horrible when I say this, but how come this person gets their hands on three poor snakes and mistreats them and I'm not allowed even one that I would look after well? Life's a beach.......

Actually she said they eat just fine. She just didn't have the time or money to purchase feeders! I didn't even get to asking her if she feeds them seperate or outside the enclosure, I just had to leave.:matrixfig

None of my BPs have hides and I have absolutely no problems with any of them feeding or breeding.

And how many ball pythons do you have? You DO know they can get stressed from something like that, right? Why make a ball stressed for no reason?

Me? I only have 1 BP and have only had him for a month. But umm even I know her husbandry is way off. So yes, I DO know that can stress them and no I DON'T know why you would want to stress them like that.

    That was the point :fishslap:

Don't have an exact number, but around 60 or 70. They can't be too stressed considering most have never missed a meal since I've had them.

;) you're one of the big breeders.

So what you are saying is it would be ok to put a snake in a tub and leave it be without hides?

as far as i know i think some breeders dont use hides- that or prehaps just for breeding the animals. then again those tubs are smallish.

I thought he was just a person with a few snakes, not 50+! :D

Not a big breeder, but I don't see a problem with it if it doesn't affect their feeding. There are 3 BPs that I have crumpled up paper in the tub with them so they feel more secure. They wouldn't eat without some sort of hide, so I put the paper in to make them feel more secure. Had to do that with 2 hatchlings and a w/c female.

If I had them in a regular cage, or in a more opened rack (my racks are all black and the only light that goes in is from the front of the tub) then I would certainly give them hides.

Just as well it wasn't me. I would have raised the riot act with her!!!

I'd rather go without myself than have my snakes go hungry:mad:
