Have you ever seen a baby rabbit when they are first born? Depending on the breed of the rabbit they can be about the size of a rat hopper to a small to medium rat. Some snakes refuse to eat anything other the rats or mice or in your case hamsters.I myself do not know anyone that feeds there ball pythons rabbits even the bigger ball pythons. Now boas, burms and other bigger snakes love the bunnies:P .

    Re: rabbits
feeding rabbits is completely unnecessary. you need to consider that ball pythons are imprint feeders and if you switch to rabbits you'll have to find young rabbits every week for the next 20+ years.

dont worry about nutrition. they get everything they need from rats or mice.

Maybe yes maybe no.Some ball pythons get stuck on one food type and thats it.Who cares if the hamsters are stupid, would you prefer it be smart and kill your snake:irkd: .The breeding of rabbits is one smelly project:grabbed: .Unless you can get your snake to eat frozen thawed rabbits you will only get a couple feedings out of a litter of rabbits.Rabbits grow very fast, thats why they are everywhere in the wild. What do you plan on doing with the ones that are to large for your snake to eat?? If you think the price of a hamster a week to feed your snake is expensive, your in for a shock for what it costs to feed rabbits.I am not being crude here but a rabbit is constantly eating and the other end is always dumping:P .See if you can get a price of a bag of rabbit food and you decide if its worth the try.

hamsters are stupid cuz they smell and teh ones here are usually infertile. rabbit poo is great for teh garden and i can feed him f/t rabbits. im guessing star would switch over pretty well cuz if theres the smell of hamsters hell attack anything thats warm, so that could be warmed up rabbit scented ith a hamster. if i do use rabbits id like to get a small breed. you know it sux actually cuz i saw mice for sale here ONCE and i was going to get a pair but they ahd no males!

I have no idea if a BP that's been eating hamsters would switch to baby rabbits or not. Some might be incredibly stubborn about it...and some could care less. If you can get your hands on a few frozen rabbit pinks, you could try and see before you jumped into the expense of breeding them. Rabbits take up a lot more space for breeding purposes than wee little hamsters. But I'm with you...I'd much rather enjoy cute little breeder bunnies than mess wtih stinky ol' hamsters. (I'm not much of a hamster fan!)

The only drawback that comes to mind (if your snake would switch and you're willing to go to all that effort to breed rabbits) is a nutritional issue of feeding exclusively newborn prey. And I'm not at all certain its a real issue. But I've heard that pinks and fuzzies are not as "complete" as adult prey items because their bones have not fully calcified and they are way more fatty tissue than muscle. I just don't know how valid a concern that really is.

When we bred rabbits it was a twice a day job cleaning up the crap.Like i said food goes in one end and something comes out the other end constantly:P .Yes you can keep them outside but then you have frozen water to deal with during the cold months. Then you have wild kritters trying to get to your rabbits to eat them. How cold does it get in Turkey where you live?

You know i never though about the bones not being fully developed for the calcium:oops: .I have only ever fed 5lb rabbits to a burmese python we had sometime back.

I actually see the non-hardened bones as a good thing ... not as many calories expended to digest the prey.

Joe ... check out Shnaks location ... what works for people in the US is not always a viable option for people in other countries.

Shnak ... the best food item for your snake is something that you can feed regularly.

Your snake may not even take rabbits ... as mentioned above ball pythons in particular tend to be imprint feeders ... you can try scenting the rabbits with the hamster ... but it may not work. You should get a few pinkies to try with before going through the expense of setting up your own animals.

One thing to watch out for with captive rabbits is "wild" cats and dogs. Dogs are known to rip into rabbit cages to kill them, and cats are known to eat the feet off the babies through the wire caging. One local rabbitry lost around 160 rabbits last month to cats.

Rabbit pinks dont have alot of hair ... this will make a real messy smear to clean up (hair helps to hold together the poop). I've also read that snakes need the stomach content of herbivores to keep them healthy. Depending on the breed of rabbit this may or may not happen (New Zealands have pinks that are close to a medium rabbit, where as dwarvees are smaller and may be able to eat some greens before being fed).

Sorry Joe ... on alot of forums people start jumping down throats about "you should only do this" without realizing that there may be mitigating factors ...

As far as lab rats ... You can get stock from lab supply companies ... You may even be able to get live stock from a lab. Normally labs freeze their rats once they are done with them ... Around here they give the lab animals to rescues or Nature centers. Just specify that you can not use animals that have had any chemical testing done to them.

of course! there is a reptile park who has lab rats and mice way down in antalya, im sure they can be purchased. kinda sad you have to admit, something as intelligent as a rat having disgusting tests done on it.
