Turbochargers
Are turbocharges street legal?Because this guy in my neighborhood has one on his car and that thing is loud.I can hear it whining before i can see the actual car.

Re: Turbochargers
In Virginia I think any modification to your car is illegal. But I doubt he would get a ticket for having a turbo. Only loud exhaust.

Re: Turbochargers
They're legal...maybe not in cali, but in FL they are...that's all I know.
Turbos and Superchargers do basically the same thing..give more power. A lot of cars come supercharged or turbo'd from the factory...I know the SRT-4 comes with a turbo straight from the dealer. So if turbos are illegal, then i would guess SRT-4's are illegal in that state too....

SRT-4 are not illegal, turbo is STOCK for that car.....
modification is something ALTERED. If that car didn't not come stock from the factory with turbo..it could be illegal.

Re: Turbochargers
Turbo's aren't illegal if they're stock...neither is running no mufflers, if it's stock:D

I lived in Florida and as far as I am aware, EVERYTHING is legal!

Re: Turbochargers
the turbo is legal but there may be a noise ordianace (SP) that you could get him to tune down the blowoffs and impeller noise.

That may not be the turbo you are hearing but the exhaust.

With a whine? I doubt it... It could be an intake, sometimes intakes make a really loud whining noise. Even in Virginia it is legal to modify your car as long as it still passes emissions, and is within noise ordinances.

Re: Turbochargers
all that means is his turbo is on the virge of death... either that or he couldnt afford a real turbo and got one of those whistler tips or whatever they're called....
or his differential is going out! those whine real loud.

Not necessarily... Some turbos are crazy loud and they are working fine. Have you ever heard a turboed Supra? Some of those guys running 45 psi on their cars are incredibly loud.

Re: Turbochargers
the "whining" sound you heard could quite possibly be the blow off valve.
Spent two years in japan, where just about everything is turbocharged...
