Possible buy.
Guys i have a problem. I am new here for i'm usally on Redtailedboa.com but anyways i might be getting a ball python who is 2 years old. But here are the downsides
1. She uses a heatrock in the winter for the snake
2. The snake eats LIVE rats.
3. She feeds it once every 3 weeks
The good side
1. Its really close to were i live.
2. I will be able to see the snake before the buy
3. I get the setup and snake for only 80 dollars.
Guys i need info on changeing the snake to f/d
I need help for ideas on what i should espect for this will be my first BP

Make sure there are no thermal burns, and dump the rock in the trash.

So what? Sorry, didn't mean to be rude, lol. But seriously, it's not a bad thing.

Re: Possible buy.
I'm confused ... Why is eating LIVE a downside?

Umm, I think I know why he doesn't like Live
I've seen him at rtb.net, the place where live is a sin... lol.
( I am NOT saying that site sucks or whatever, just saying they are uptight about live...)

Re: Possible buy.
Hehe....Adam, you're a stinker! :P
Let's not turn this into a live vs f/t debate. Some people prefer to feed f/t and that's fine, too.

I absolutely agree 100% ... I just don't want to be judged for doing what works for me. ;)

Adam,
The Calvary will be here shortly for your detainment. LOL, almost everyone hates to feed live. I raised a beautiful Red Tail Boa into adulthood feeding live and only had ONE incident in uuuhhm about five years. The incident was MY fault not the rat nor the snakes. I did not know my RTB was sleeping and whap the rat bit her on the nostril. Everything was ok with a little triple antibiotic but I switched to frozen thawed shortly after that. That was pretty much my turning point. That’s all for today folks. My :2cents:

I would definitely check the snake for thermal burns and listen for any wheezing. If you are comfortable check the mouth to make sure it is clear and healthy looking.
One thing to consider is - are you comfortable feeding live? This snake may only take live, since that is what it is used to. You can attempt to switch it over to f/t if that's what you are more comfortable with but it may not take it.
Best of luck. Ball pythons are wonderful animals. :sweeet:

That's a myth ... Just yesterday I fed over 400 snakes live rats and mice and not a single one got bit, scratch, or even looked at funny by their dinner.
If done properly and responsibly, there are no problems with feeding live.

400 hundred 0.0 wow thats alot. Ok i guess i can feed live ^^
-
Re: Possible buy.
Please don't think feeding live is a sin. It is not. Some snakes will only eat live and if watched you will not have a problem.... it's when people are irresponsible that leave mice/rats in with snakes for LONG periods of time un attented is when you run in to problems.
As forthat heat rock, vut that cord and throw it in the trash! That is the best please for that heat rock!
Last but not least Good luck with your new snake :)

Re: Possible buy.
There are other snake forums where a single method of feeding is promoted as being the "one, true way" and all other ways evil, vile and harmful.
BP.net is a bit more open minded. Most posters here have the following philosophy on feeding methods: as long as you are feeding responsibly (proper size feeder, healthy looking feeder, proper frequency, etc.), use the method (live, F/T, PK) that works best for you AND your snake(s). =)
I agree, the hot rock is the biggest problem. Like the others said, check for thermal burns and sign of respitory infection...and :welcome: to BP.net!

Re: Possible buy.
Ok awsome. I got a local place were i can get mice or hamspters 0.o but i'm going to petsmart to get rats most likely so i'm happy. I hope this can work out. Thanks all :grouphug:
-
Re: Possible buy.
You bet! I would advise trying to stay away from hamsters. From what I've read from others more experienced than myself, ball pythons can get a little "addicted" to hamsters and then refuse to go back to rats/mice. If it were me, I would definitely try to get an appropriately sized rat or mousey. =)
-
Re: Possible buy.
First, :welcome: !
Secondly - as you've found out here - we advocate feeding what YOU are most comfortable and what your snake will eat. We do; however, try to dispel the myths about live feeding. There are many members here, myself included, who feed live - and have never had a problem. While I don't have the collection Adam has, I did just feed 32 live mice today. 15 x 2 small or medium mice for the bigger ones, and 1 small for the two wee ones today. No injuries here either! ;)
If you are more comfortable feeding f/t - those here who feed f/t will be happy to help you try to get her converted if that's what you prefer!
Again! Welcome!

I don't love it (or rather my pocketbook doesn't) - I have GOT to get a better source or get some rat breeding going on - they're eating me out of house and home! But then - if I quit smoking - that would pay my weekly feed bills.....hmmmmmm!
However - I wouldn't mind feeding ONE more if I could just pick the right one! ;)

Woot!!! Sure would like to see him! (after he digests of course) ;)
The kids are fed - I'm sipping on a cup of cinnamon coffee now and enjoying my bp.net time!

Re: Possible buy.
nothing wrong with live as i myself just fed 2 rabbits,4 rats and 13 mice a week ago. as for switching to f/t a 2 year old bp thats never been fed f/t, well good luck as my 645 gram female will never accept f/t if her life depended on it. if you want a bp on f/t buy a hatchling/yearling/adult that readily feeds on f/t.
good luck:)

Re: Possible buy.
Thanks guys. Wow... thats alot. I have a rabbit >> but its no snake food. I might use my bros 5 gallon tankto keep rats in. Ehh they won't stay in there long though so i'm fine

Re: Possible buy.

No offense taken. I know what your talking about.
Thats because my views have changed.Because I tried live and am now comfortable with it.

Re: Possible buy.
well i think he's trying to avoid the whole "oh you're a BAD REPTILE OWNER YOU FEED LIVE!!!!!" sort of thing...I've read the same thread on the other site and i know how anal they are about feeding live. I admit...on this site, i'll say i feed live, f/t, or p/k..what ever works for me at that particular time...but just to save time and avoid a b**ch fest, on the other site i'd say i feed p/k all the time.
edit: bpkid i just read some of your posts over there. Happy to see one standing up for themselves and expressing their opinion.

but over here it feels like if you feed live, you're an idiot.
LOL...nice

HEHE... I know what you mean. Didn't take long to shut that thread down did it? Wanted to add that I don't really care how people feed their own snakes. People get so uptight about what works for each individual snake. You would think that God kept the Amazon/African jungles at a perfect 81.5 - 92.5 degrees with 55% humidity every day of the year! I like when people put a little common sense to this..... now off of my soapbox. :colbert2:

Re: Possible buy.
They just banned me for talking to JS about it. He said I was giving bad advice, when I said that you could feed live, only if you are responsible. Then I called him an evil dictator. Lol.

You got banned from the site?????
-
Re: Possible buy.
Yup, I told them I like expressing my opinion and voila!
-
Re: Possible buy.
Yep. It's REAL easy to get kicked out of there. Everyone is ONEWAY. If you do not follow the crowd in that fourm, you get the boot or get chewed out.
A lot of them people think their opinions are facts and what they say must go!
Just another reason why I love this place so much! Everyone gets a long :) :grouphug:

Re: Possible buy.
I'm good here, with people who are open minded. Lol.

Wow!!! That seems to be the problem with some of the admins I have run into on other sites. You are free to express your opinions until they differ from theirs ... then.... later, you're done. I understand why some people are so adamant about feeding live (they have had snakes that have been chewed up) but again ... oh well... did you get a job yet?? :tongue2:
-
Re: Possible buy.
I got a work permit that I'll get approved in January!!! I found a place that would take me.
EDIT: LOL. And the thing that got me going, is that he said I was just a 13 year old and he was keeping reptiles for 35 years!! I don't care!!! HE keeps BPs at 85 hot spot so....
He said we should make a poll to see who they like the best, me or him. He's stuck in Kindergarten. lol.
-
Re: Possible buy.
Sweet. Good luck with that Shaun.

Re: Possible buy.
I got banned off of that forum (my first forum ever) in the first 2 weeks that I was there! I had a 5 page long arguement about live and I did pretty good until some retard said " can a mod de-activate this guy for a few weeks?''. Then every time I tried to log-in I couldn't. It has been 6 months since then and now I can kind of make it through. Becky(SatanicIntention) invited me here the day I got banned from there. I am so glad that I came here !

besides..i like it here better :)

It is. I just wanted to know about how wild snakes deal with their internal parasites and it became a full-blown 'don't feed live' debate.
-
Re: Possible buy.
Part of me says....go out with a bang...visit the site one last time and express my opinion on their close minded thoughts.....the other part says it's best just to leave it be and don't start any problems.
Edit...... :hijackd:
sorry

Re: Possible buy.
I feed f/t. (for the time being) Not cause I think the snake will get hurt, but watching the mouse die by suffication...Just reminds me MORE how much I would hate to die that way. lol
It looks horrible, eyes buldge, limbs twitch... then I tell myself " it's not me,it's a mouse,GO FOR IT!" and everythings better...
Besides I can buy a dozen frozen and save them in the fridge (sp), works well 4 me!
-
Re: Possible buy.
Ehh wow... I'm probley going to feed frozen just because price and my mom won't like the screaming of the rats. Ehh oh well. Hopefully the ball won't be pissy at me when he/she dosn't get her living food.
