Hey I noticed in you sticky thread about shedding, you showed us a picture of a het pie? ( hope I got that right )
Anyways the (male) snake in the picture looks just like mine.

So i'm wondering if mine is a het pie...

cause I've seen various types of what I thought to be norms.
Like the "long streak" on the back of its neck and it tail.... mine's not long, it's very short ( like yours in the picture )

Can you clearify this for me?

The chances are slim that yours is a het pied if you didn't purchase it from someone who produced het pieds. Here's mine, just to show that het pieds' looks vary from snake to snake. Hets, just like normals vary in their appearances.

Waldo, heterozygous gene carries of recessive traits appear normal and the variability of hets is just the same as it is for normals. You could have 2 snakes that are 100% het for pied that have completely different normal coloration. Just because a normal "looks like" another snake that's a true het, does not mean that normal is likely a heterozygous carrier of the gene.

I have picked up on a few things about hets though...some of the true hets I've seen in person have a different "look" to them. Its hard to explain. Anyone else ever noticed that?

All "het" (or heterozygous) means is that the animal carries ONE of a PAIR of genes. It takes two "albino genes" to make an albino snake. If a snake is carrying one of those genes, it will look perfectly normal, but will be called "het for albino."

In most uses of the word, it means the animal looks normal, but carries the genes to create visible morph offspring if bred to the right mate.

There are some visible morphs that show up with only one side of that "pair" of genes...such as pastels or spiders. In the case of pastels...one pastel gene will give you a visible morph...and a pair of them will give you a different visible morph called the "super pastel." In this case...sometimes people will refer to the pastel as "het for super pastel."
