If you went to Daytona...
.. was The Snake Keeper (the Sutherlands) there? I just ask because I am trying to get ahold of them, but I figure if they had to go from Cali to Fla, I definately understand why they are not reachable yet! Just wondering.

Re: If you went to Daytona...
They were there...Aside from Daytona they are experiencing a lot of local issues with their move of their home and facilities to Utah. Hopefully it all works out for them. If you havent seen the article yet, here it is:

No doubt. They got the permits, built the buildings and now people are getting scared. Maybe Anaconda and Snakes on Planes have something to do with it. Its an irrational fear of snakes...

Re: If you went to Daytona...
I think they need to admit they are a little more than hobby breeders.

Hmm.. I didn't get that from the article. It stated that the Sutherlands indicated that they were hobby breeders instead of a business. It sounded like the residents were more concerned of a large business going in instead of having a problem with the snakes themselves. Maybe the Sutherlands tried to keep it low key because they were afraid of the community backlash of a snake business, but their strategy might be biting them in the rear now.

Re: If you went to Daytona...
They need to handle it as a business and operate it under a business rather than claim a hobby. If they did claim a hobby, how did the people in town know about the size of their collection/business? They should have inquired about this and any permits needed before investing $0.01.

That is entirely possible. I didn't read it that way and if they did get their permits under false pretense than it would stand to reason that the community might be upset with good reason. It just proves that I am not a very thorough reader :)

Agreed, stating they are "hobby breeders" is going to bite them in the butt. But there is no doubt in my mind that the community is up in arms about them moving in with snakes, it is just being masked under "other" concerns.

Exactly...The community got wind of things and found a small clause in the law that allowed them to protest it.

Thats exactly why Amy and I are "shopping" for an acreage outside of any city limits. That way the only laws that would affect us would have to be at county or state level. ;)

Re: If you went to Daytona...
Didn't one of the rodent suppliers go through this same problem a little while ago? It is pretty sad, but it's probably just something you have to consider if you plan on expanding/building/moving. I know there are a lot of people out there that just look for a reason to complain and protest no matter what, and a subject like snakes or rodents is just icing on the cake for them. :zerb:

And being herpers, they should have followed the letter of the law and not claimed to be hobby breeders since we all know how common folk are afraid of snakes and such and will twist whatever they can to oppose honest business-like snake breeders.
Regardless, that totally sucks. I hope they are able to work it out. Not a great way to start out in a new place. =P

Re: If you went to Daytona...
Jen,
I understand that you're anxious, but they will get your snake to you before you know it. :sweeet:
I talked to Dan for a while at the expo, and he said he's not concerned with having thier licence revoked no matter what the city council says at this point, as they did everything right. His main concern is that his family won't be accepted into the neighborhood. All thier neighbors in California understood their business, and everyone got along. These are the people their kids will go to school with, and that they will go to church with. They just don't want to be the outcasts of the town. The problem is that most of the people in that area of Mapleton are old retired farmers that are pretty set thier ways, and not too open minded. No matter what Bradshaw says, it IS about the snakes, and probably his next term in office.
Being from Utah, I couldn't be more excited to have them move in an hour away from me, and I offered the help of the UHA (Utah Herpetological Association) if there is anything we can do. I hope everything goes smooth at the meeting tomorrow.

They were three rows in front of me on the flight out of Daytona... I also noticed at their booth that they had HUGE insulated boxes that had FedEx lables on them. So, I'm assuming they flew out sans snakes, and shipped them to the expo/home.

It is extremely hard for a breeder to make the trip to Daytona, come back, clean and feed hundreds of snakes, put animals away, take care of rodents, get back to the kids, unwind, etc .... and THEN catch up on all of the phone calls, emails, PM's, etc quickly .... TSK is one of the "big boys", they will get back to you, you just have to hang in there a little bit. I know for me, phone calls are working out a lot better right now than emails and PM's .... you might want to give them a call (time difference in mind) if you're feeling impatient. ;)

Evan, thanks for filling us in! Dang that sucks...just such bad mojo for being newcomers there...do keep us informed as to how it's going for them and if there's anything this community can do to help. =)
