Big Scare! (blood python pics)
Well I decided to buy a female blood python today at the expo (hoping to to breed with my male ball Kole for Super Balls)! I brought it home set up his new terrarium, put her in it and closed it right away. Well from my other thread "My boy Kole.. Expo Pics" pics of the blood were requested. So i decided after about 2 hours to go pull her out of the cage and snap a few shots. She was no where to be found.. I looked under everything (which consist of 2 hides). I got scared quick.... I couldn't believe it happend to me! I felt like worst python owner ever :sigh2: . Anway after about 30 minutes of looking I decided to check the hides again thinking I was crazy or something. I remembered the front of the warm hide looking like it had substrate pushed to the door (making it very hard to see in) so i produced to dig through the substrate under the warm hide and FOUND HER BURRIED!?!?! Now I know this isn't a BP and just another species of python but.. I had no clue they would bury themselves? SCARED THE crap OUT OF ME! All is well and now I have pics!

My blood pics are getting no attention :'( :(

Re: Big Scare! (blood python pics)
wow :O She is beautiful :P I just finished reading your post about the expo and was wondering what a blood python was. I am a brand new bp owner and really know little about the different types, but I am trying to learn. So you can breed a regular bp to your blood python and get superballs? What exactly are superballs? I have seen pastels and the albinos and the spiders and a bunch of others but this is the first bloodpython I have seen and don't think I have ever seen a superball.....I have been looking for a good book on bps at my local used bookstore but all they have are old out of date ones...any suggestions on a good book to really introduce me to the large world of bp? Thanks and good luck with that beautiful girl :mouse2:

Re: Big Scare! (blood python pics)
The blood python and ball python hybrids are called the bloody balls not super balls;)

Re: Big Scare! (blood python pics)
Oh :(. At the expo a vendor was selling 2 2ND GEN Super Balls and said he breed a blood and a male ball? Everyone i takled to there agreed. Now in now way am I saying your wrong.. im just confused now :( So im trying to breed bloody balls? What do you think my chances are?
-
Re: Big Scare! (blood python pics)
@ ZEKESMOM: A blood python is not a ball python ;) I thought thats what made them super when they were bred.. but i guess im wrong?
@ Joe: how much do bloody ball babies go for?

why does it matter what the price is? You should breed for fun, not to try to make alot of money.

It would not shock me if someone was trying to sell them by another name to make people think they were new.Going by the sound of your inexperiance with snakes i doubt you will succed in the breeding of the blood to the ball pythons. It is more then just throwing two snakes together and chachingo.I suggest you take your time and take proper care of your snakes and when the time comes then give it a try.Not being rude here just very honest

Re: Big Scare! (blood python pics)

Im looking for a pair of 100% HET PIED balls. Im a computer programmer.. Im going to college for it. Breeding is going to be a hobby of mine. Sorry that it came off wrong.

Sometimes its hard to figure out if someone is being a smart mouth or just talking while on the forums.Thats why i try to place that i am not being rude just honest;) .In my beggining i told my freind Rusty Davis AKA Rusty's-balls to be point blank honest with me when it comes to ball pythons and there care and breedings.Well i just completed my second year breeding ball pythons ;) .I also like helping others learn what i was taught.

Re: Big Scare! (blood python pics)
Joe I believe he got the term 'Super Ball' from Roussis reptiles who has quite a collection of them. I've honestly never heard them refered to as 'Bloody Balls' so that was new for me, I can understand his confusion.
-
Re: Big Scare! (blood python pics)
Nice looking blood!
I have a blood named Kali as well. Make sure you give them solid tim to acclimate to her new settings - and do keep an eye on humidity as they need it a bit more moist than balls.
-
Re: Big Scare! (blood python pics)
Neat Blood; looks fat and healthy. However, you have many, many moons to go before she will be breeding size!

Roussis reptiles were the first ones to produce them and he was calling them bloody balls.I will try to find a ad of his in the old reptile magazine i have here, this might take me a day lol.Maybe they changed the name as it never was a project i would consider so maybe i never heard the change.:confuzd:

Re: Big Scare! (blood python pics)
Beautiful snake- i thought they were called supers, i have never heard the term bloody balls and quite frankly if that's what they're called its kinda poor in taste.
-
Re: Big Scare! (blood python pics)
I always assumed that a good name for them would be "blood x ball hybrid."

Yea it sounded very sick to me and maybe that could be why they changed it:) .

Re: Big Scare! (blood python pics)
So the snakes didn't actually breed physically???
That's a nice blood python. I would get one but they look too much for me to handle, especially when they are big :O

Well this is what i heard at first that he artificually inseminated them, then i heard they did infact breed.Since blood pythons are not of my interest i never checked back for any more info.

Re: Big Scare! (blood python pics)
It would seem unlikely- even though they are different, if you can get some of those crazy hybrids to breed- a blood and a ball doesnt seem so far fetched.
I love bloods, and would love to have one. though, it will be atleast a year or two away... most likely 3. I want a big snake but not in length. :3
-
Re: Big Scare! (blood python pics)
Maybe I was misinformed... how big is my baby Kali going to get?
@ Smulkin: LoL thats funny. I only chose that name to try and keep my "K" 4 letter naming convention.
-
Re: Big Scare! (blood python pics)
They can get very heavy. I've seen one that 3 people needed to hold because it was so heavy.
Females average 4-6 feet and can exceed 30 pounds.
-
Re: Big Scare! (blood python pics)
so that perfect then? only 4-6 feet? Wieght shouldn't be a problem. What size enclose will I need for her?
-
Re: Big Scare! (blood python pics)
It sounds like you didn't do much research before getting her. Check the NERD caresheet on newenglandreptile.com
-
Re: Big Scare! (blood python pics)
I did but they told me she wouldn't wiegh that much? I did know she was going to get 4-6 feet!
-
Re: Big Scare! (blood python pics)
Do you remember who you bought it from? Some breeders will tell you anything to sell you a snake.
http://www.newenglandreptile.com/CareBlood.html
found the caresheet for you.

No, it sounds like you didn't do too much research, I was initially worried about that- considering bloods don't handle 'mistakes' very well. Go look up the caresheets and read all you can and make sure you get your temps exact. If you have a glass tank- screw it and get a tub it will make things 10 times easier for you.

Three people hold it? It sounds like its over weight then. I read that a lot of people over feed these kids. If it required three people... That's rediculous.

Re: Big Scare! (blood python pics)
I have heard a lot about these tubes? Can someone explain what they are and how I obtain one?
-
Re: Big Scare! (blood python pics)
Tubs can be found at walmart. Like sterlite and rubbermaid. Just get one, with a digital thermometer, and a heating pad, with a dimmer,a few hides, a water bowl, some newspaper, and you're good to go. When you think he's ready to move, change into another tub. When they are bigger, you might want to buy a Plastic Cage, like boaphile.com.
Boaphile is the cheapest, but you could make your own.
You would need at least a 4 foot cage.
Here is a tub.

Re: Big Scare! (blood python pics)
I read the NERD's caresheet for bloods and that picture makes it look easy to house. I currently have her in a 20gl tank but now im thinking about going with a tube! I have 70$ credit at Mr Petman so I will pick up a heating pad today. I will also goto lowes and purchase another Acu-Rite.
Questions: How are you letting air into that tube? I don't see holes.
It must be awsome for humidity?
EDIT: Oh and how much would a dimmer be? And can i get one from walmart?
-
Re: Big Scare! (blood python pics)
There are some holes on the side that were drilled in. It's hard to see all the holes, but I promise, they have holes ;).
They are better than aquariums in everything but the way they look. Humidity is awesomein these tubs, and so is keeping the heat in.

Re: Big Scare! (blood python pics)
Look at this blood from Pro Exotics, hope you did your research on the girl. Good Luck

no, no, NO! do NOT get a heat pad- unless its some sort of zoo-med which i wouldn't use those anyways, ive read they have a tendency to screw up. You're going to need some heat tape and a thermostat to control how hot the temperature gets. They can get up to 115 degrees and that is lethal. Drill holes into the Tub (if you ask for tubes online, no one will know what you're talking about) to release air. Yes, I will never keep a snake in a glass aquarium unless prehaps it was a Rubber Boa. My friend did that with crowley and he NEVER had a good shed.
Also- do NOT use a dimmer, they are unreliable. Only use a thermostat. MG Reptiles sells all this stuff online.
-
Re: Big Scare! (blood python pics)
How much will a thermostat run me? Why is a dimmer unreliable? I have been reading care sheets and I believe I could handle her! Also won't the snake be able to push that top off of a tube?

get a Helix or a Herpstat, they run between $100-150.

Re: Big Scare! (blood python pics)
I don't see anything wrong with a reptile heating pad hooked up to a dimmer if you are using it temporarily. If you have the money though, get the thermostat, and I'm pretty sure if you can get a thermostat, a foot of Flexxwatt isn't going to make you broke. The snake can push the top off the tub when it gets bigger. That's why you are going to need a plastic cage or one that you built.
EDIT: If you are going to get a heat pad with a dimmer, check the temps in your snake's tub frequently to make sure everything is ok. Make sure to put the temp in a room where the temperature does not change much.

Short term no, but i would still check on it a good bit.
And like BPKID said, put something on top of the cage definatly. I dont even trust my tub for Ben nosing around it and put about 10lbs worth of books on it. Crowley gets about 20lbs on his tub.
Eh. even though it seems easy- bloods aren't a beginner snake and it should have been a purchase made after a year or more of experience with keeping bps imo. Either way- congrats! I'm very jealous she's a pretty girl. I love bloods recently, though, every snake i ever started out saying "No, dont like it. Ugly" I now love love love! LOL

Re: Big Scare! (blood python pics)
get some big binder clips for the lids, I use those on my quarentine rack and they work great.

Re: Big Scare! (blood python pics)
I apologize for not researching in advance. I know have a grasp the concept of what im in store for. With my constant updates and the help from you guys I'm sure my blood will be just fine. I guess I will shut the air vent to my room completely. I will purshase a tube today with a heated pad and a dimmer. I will bring like 6 large binder clips home from work today. Any ideas on what size tube I should buy her?
