Thursday night, late, after nobody's around, my friend and I go through a fast food line, and buy 50 dollars worth of cheeseburgers and fries, and chicken. I'm not allowed to feed the dogs on Thursday, for I'm told that they will make a mess in the gas chamber, and why waste the food. So, Thursday night, with the lights still closed, I go into the saddest room that anyone can every imagine, and let all the doomed dogs out out their cages. I have never been bit, and in all my years doing this, the dogs have never fought over the food. My buddy and I, open each wrapper of cheeseburger and chicken sandwich, and feed them to the skinny, starving dogs. They swallow the food so fast, that I don't believe they even taste it. There tails are wagging, and some don't even go for the food, they roll on their backs wanting a scratch on their bellys. They start running, jumping and kissing me and my buddy. They go back to their food, and come back to us. All their eyes are on us with such trust and hope, and their tails wag so fast, that I have come out with black and blues on my thighs.. They devour the food, then it's time for them to devour some love and peace. My buddy and I sit down on the dirty, pee stained concrete floor, and we let the dogs jump on us. They lick us, they put their butts in the air to play, and they play with each other. Some lick each other, but most are glued on me and my buddy. I look into the eyes of each dog. I give each dog a name. They will not die without a name. I give each dog 5 minutes of unconditional love and touch. I talk to them, and tell them that I'm so sorry that tomorrow they will die a gruesome, long, torturous death at the hands of me in the gas chamber. Some tilt their heads to try to understand. I tell them, that they will be in a better place, and I beg them not to hate me. I tell them that I know I'm going to *censored*. , but they will all be playing with all the dogs and cats in heaven. After about 30 minutes, I take each dog individually, into their feces filled concrete jail cell, and pet them and scratch them under their chins. Some give me their paw, and I just want to die. I just want to die. I close the jail cell on each dog, and ask them to forgive me. As my buddy and I are walking out, we watch as every dog is smiling at us and them don't even move their heads. They will sleep, with a full belly, and a false sense of security. As we walk out of the doomed dog room, my buddy and I go to the cat room. We take our box, and put the very friendly kittens and pregnant cats in our box. The shelter doesn't keep tabs on the cats, like they do the dogs. As I hand pick which cats are going to make it out, I feel like I'm playing God, deciding whose going to live and die. We take the cats into my truck, and put them on blankets in the back. Usually, as soon as we start to drive away, there are purring cats sitting on our necks or rubbing against us. My buddy and I take our one way two hour trip to a county that is very wealthy and they use injection to kill animals. We go to exclusive neighborhoods, and let one or two cats out at a time. They don't want to run, they want to stay with us. We shoo them away, which makes me feel sad. I tell them that these rich people will adopt them, and if worse comes to worse and they do get put down, they will be put down with a painless needle being cradled by a loving veterinarian. After the last cat is free, we drive back to our town. It's about 5 in the morning now, about two hours until I have to gas my best friends. I go home, take a shower, take my 4 anti-anxiety pills and drive to work.. I don't eat, I can't eat. It's now time, to put these animals in the gas chamber. I put my ear plugs in, and when I go to the collect the dogs, the dogs are so excited to see me, that they jump up to kiss me and think they are going to play. I put them in the rolling cage and take them to the gas chamber. They know. They just know. They can smell the death.. They can smell the fear. They start whimpering, the second I put them in the box. The boss tells me to squeeze in as many as I can to save on gas. He watches. He knows I hate him, he knows I hate my job. I do as I'm told. He watches until all the dogs, and cats (thrown in together) are fighting and screaming. The sounds is very muffled to me because of my ear plugs. He walks out, I turn the gas on, and walk out. I walk out as fast as I can. I walk into the bathroom, and I take a pin and draw blood from my hand. Why? The pain and blood takes my brain off of what I just did. In 40 minutes, I have to go back and unload the dead animals. I pray that none survived, which happens when I overstuff the chamber. I pull them out with thick gloves, and the smell of carbon monoxide makes me sick. So does the vomit and blood, and all the bowel movements. I pull them out, put them in plastic bags. They are in heaven now, I tell myself. I then start cleaning up the mess, the mess, that YOU PEOPLE are creating by not spay or neutering your animals. The mess that YOU PEOPLE are creating by not demanding that a vet come in and do this humanely. You ARE THE TAXPAYERS, DEMAND that this practice STOP! So, don't call me the monster, the devil, the gasser, call the politicians, the shelter directors, and the county people the devil. Heck, call the governor, tell him to make it stop. As usual, I will take sleeping pills tonight to drown out the screams I heard in the past, before I discovered the ear plugs. I will jump and twitch in my sleep, and I believe I'm starting to hallucinate. This is my life. Don't judge me. Believe me, I judge myself enough.

I am in tears reading this. I signed it.

That is so sad!! When I have had to let a pet go in the past whether its old age or health issues , The least I can do is hold them in my arms while they go.I couldn't bear them being scared and amongst strangers in their final moments.

I preach to everyone that pets or for life, not till you are tired of them. If you can't keep an animal, the LEAST you could do is insure them a new loving home.

That has me in tears now!!! Sign it everybody!!!

I am definately drying over that; I know that I could never have that job. I am so sensitive to pain and suffering, it would kill me.
This is so tragic because it is SO preventable.. I wholeheartedly love anyone who adopts an animal from the SPCA or other humane agency/rescue and gives that animal a loving home..

Sadly,I have been in that persons shoes, I too have been the one to have to euthanize cats and dogs because of the lack of spay and neutering. I hated every moment of it, however, the animals I euthanized, were done so by injection and not the gas chamber as those animals are.

I deal with this crapola every day. People putting their animals to sleep because "fluffy didn't match the new furniture"... And yes... That is an actual excuse that our Animal Shelter was given. Or people who are moving and don't want the burden or taking the animal with them. Ya know what? Don't move. You commited to having that animal for the rest of its life, take care of it like a decent human being. Don't feed Ol' Roy or Dinner Time or whatever generic dog/cat food just because you're a little tight on money. You're going to end up paying an arm and a leg because your dog or cat can't digest any of it, and the 'food' is just coming right back out the other end, therefore you end up paying more money to make up for the nutritional deficiencies. Woohoo for by-products.

And this is why we spay and neuter. I wish people who bred dogs and cats were required to go to an animal shelter and watch litters of puppies and kittens, adult dogs and cats being put to sleep just because there weren't enough homes. Also, people who won't neuter their male dog because their husband doesn't believe in it... It's just a load of crap. Yay for testicular and prostate cancer! Yay for aggressiveness, unruly behavior, roaming, getting hit by cars! And this is for those people who won't spay their female dog just because they want to breed her once or twice. Why breed her at all? It would make her a much better family pet to be spayed at 4-5 months when she was supposed to, so she doesn't have to feel those hormones, or get mammary cancer, or pyometra, or ovarian cancer, or a ruptured uterus, just because they wanted to breed her...

I see so many people come in with their ragged looking Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, Chihuahuas, etc, just because they want to breed them and make money, but don't want to take the time to even get heartworm prevention(and this is TEXAS, people! Mosquito capital of the world...) or the full series of vaccinations. Yay Parvo!

Please fix your dog or cat(or human in some cases*cough*), you'll have a much better pet-owing experience. Ya'll all know how many ads for free kittens/puppies are in the newspapers everyday.

It enrages me too.. my friend runs a dog rescue, and it is appaling how many dogs and cats are found roaming town or worse, only half dead because a car smashed into them on a lonely country road, and even a merciful death is denied them. It is a two-pronged remedy to all this; one, fixing your pet. Two, not letting it roam. There are so many "individuals" out there who do not even deserve to have a pet, let alone children, but sadly and stupidly they have both, ruining a bunch of lives in the process..
Not to mention how treacherous it is when you have to slam on the brakes when some idiot's dog runs out in front of your car that's going 55 miles an hour.. I just know that my pets are safely contained in their cages/field/house and I just wish others could do the same.

OMG :tears: Even living on the dairy farm where we had oodles of barn cats, we were far enough away they didn't have to worry about cars, and we fed them during the winter time. Unfortunately they had to deal w/distemper, but we loved them as ferals, the best we could.


All of my pets have been spayed and neutered, and when we wanted another to replace Stripe Kitty, we searched for free to a good home, and then took and kept the two brothers together, Norman and Riley. I can't believe all the ****heads that just HAVE to have a bred puppy or kitten instead of adoption.

It's our job to CARE for these animals. It DOESN'T have to be this way, but sadly it is. I tried volunteering at a shelter, but I was sooooo torn up inside, wanting to take them all and give them a loving home, that I had to stop.

Unfortunately, this issue is not limited to cats/dogs; take the horse world, for example. There are so many people breeding out there, that it drives the prices of horses down; in the end, many healthy and usable horses end up going to meat buyers who send the meat off to other countries for consumption. I know that many horsepeople see this as a necessary evil, even a humane way to end the lives of horses who are no longer "useful" or "wanted," but I see it as a cop-out way for people to discard horses that have served them well over the years; and get a little money for doing so, to boot. I know that our horses will never again be bred (my friend bred them before we were able to house them at home) and if/when they are dying of something incurable, they will receive a decent burial here at home.. I hate what humans do to animals.

Funny I should read this thread this morning. I went out on my balcony to have my usual Sunday morning quiet coffee time and looked out to see a very sad sight. There's been a feral female cat living under the porch in the house next door with her two pretty much grown kittens. Mike's been trying to catch them since we moved here (not like Animal Control can do much...in any city there are thousands of feral cats).

Well this morning she's dead in the ditch in front of the house. Likely hit by a car or dead of disease. So as soon as my stomach can stand it I'm off to get the gloves on and remove the remains of this poor creature who was once likely somebody's "beloved" pet. We'll continue to keep trying to catch her babies which are thank goodness long weaned but it just makes me sick to see this lovely black and white kitty dead on the street and not one person will care or mourn her passing.

No cat deserves this. She should have been spayed, she should have been loved, and she sure as heck shouldn't have been out in the night trying to scrounge up some food and ending up under the wheels of a car. Obviously whoever hit her didn't even bother to stop and considering this is a quiet street and they wouldn't have been travelling all that fast, somehow I doubt they didn't feel the bump. Just another cat right? People suck sometimes. :mad:

Oh man Jo, how sad that is. If I were driving and hit a cat like that, I could never just leave the poor thing there.. at least you can give the poor thing a decent burial.

I signed it as well. I used to work at a vet clinic, and one of the first things I had to do was assit in euthanizing a big beautiful fluffy white cat with a inoperable tumor in her throat.

It was my first time doing this, and the other vet tech and myself were less than skilled. Everytime one of us moved she would jump into someones arms and purr. Finally after about 20 minutes, I told the other vet tech to just give her the shot, she died in my arms.
She had cancer and nothing could be done for her. She would have eventually sufficated from the tumor blocking off her airway, she had already started fainting.
I couldn't even deal with the death of a sick animal that had been loved and cherished, I can't imagine how awful it would be to have to deal with abused ones.

Well back on topic..This was a sad story to read and its sad how many animals are put to sleep daily. I try not to think about it...
