stop this barbaric practice
Yes the sick act of venomoids :soapbx::rage::puke2:. Personaly it makes me feel sick , it serves no real purpose as most of the snakes die after this operation, even if the operation was safe and had a 100% success rate id still be against it... it is just plain wrong and should be outlawed
now im not sure if these online petitions come to anything but it cant hurt to sign it
heres a link to the petition site

Re: stop this barbaric practice
Lol, I must have signed that a long time ago because it won't let me sign.

Re: stop this barbaric practice
That is a hideous practice; mutilating a snake some jack ass can keep it as a pet.. people really disgust me sometimes.
-
Re: stop this barbaric practice
Indeed it is a very disgusting selfish act that beggars belief , i just cant help but get wound up about this subject every time it pops up or gets mentioned, i signed it just before i posted it on here , this petition also has the backing of Mark O'shea behind it so hopefully it will carry some weight :)

Re: stop this barbaric practice
I'm sure I will take alot of heat for this, but is that any differant than fixing a dog or cat? I can understand that the way they do it is barbaric, but if they did it in a way that protects the snake as much as possible is it really that bad?
-
Re: stop this barbaric practice
Fixing a cat or dog so they can't reproduce is way different than taking away a poisonous snake's venom sacks. The venom helps with the digestion process as well as killing the prey to be eaten. Fixing a cat or dog isn't barbaric either, unlike how the snake's venom sacks are removed, and someone correct me if I'm wrong, but i've heard that sometimes the sacks can grow back or something. I'm pretty sure the fangs can grow back too, but don't quote me on that one either.

Re: stop this barbaric practice
People want venomous snakes all for the reason of "want". Venmous snakes should be left alone to nature. Unless you are a trained venomous snake handler, then you should not be able to own one.

I looked this up and Im pretty sure the venom has nothing to do with digestion and you'd be feeding F/T to any venomoid anyways. I don't see a lot of difference between this and declawing cats. I really don't see these petions doing anything really, If someone pushes this any legislature could easily say lets just ban all venomous snakes and that could get the ball rolling on other species and groups.

Re: stop this barbaric practice
From the Wikipedia Free Encyclopedia on "Snake Venom"
Amino acid oxidases and proteases are used for digestion.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snake_venom
From another site on "Snake Venom"
Venoms are rich in hydrolithic enzymes, a complex mix of polypeptides, nucleases, peptidases, etc., which help digest the snake's prey.
http://library.thinkquest.org/C007974/2_6sve.htm
So yes, the venom is used to help digestion of the prey, it shouldn't matter if the prey is alive or not. Why would you only be feeding f/t to a venomoid? The difference betweent this and declawing a cat is that, for one, cat claws aren't venomous, you're not going to get poisoned if your cat scratches you. Second, cats don't need their claws to digest food, like a poisonous snake does. Cats aren't going to die if you cut off their claws.

Hemotoxins are seen in venomous animals, such as Pit vipers etc , Animal venoms contain enzymes and other proteins that are hemotoxic or neurotoxins or occasionally both (as in the Gaboon viper and similar species). In addition to killing the prey, part of the function of a hemotoxic venom is to aid digestion. The venom breaks down protein in the region of the bite, making prey easier to digest.
Greenmonkey check this site dude and be enlightened :)

Re: stop this barbaric practice
If your going to have a venomous snake people need to stop acting dumb and know they have a venomous snake and take the responsibility of owning it without harming the snake. They got what they wanted, why try deminishing it?

Can venomoids digest their prey properly? Yes. The rumor that venom is necessary for digestion, and that venomoids do not fully digest their prey, is false. We have maintained hundreds of venomoids at our facility, and each one has eaten, digested and defecated its prey at the same rate and with the same apparent efficiency as its venomous counterpart. The only thing that a venomoid cannot do is kill its prey using venom; venomoids cannot be fed live prey, but they have absolutely no difficulties consuming and digesting pre-killed prey items.

Re: stop this barbaric practice
Isn't that quote what you would expect to hear from a company called Venomoid Inc. It has also been shown in extensive research that venom along with saliva contains many enzymes that help in the process of breaking up consumed food or prey to help make it more easily digestible. Also on the point of declawing cats, it is just as cruel in my opinion. If you want a cat but dont want your precious furniture getting clawed then don't get a cat. It is as natural for a cat to have its claws as it is for a venomous snake to have its fangs and it basically boils down to humans playing with nature to suit our own selfish needs

Re: stop this barbaric practice
EXACTLY FERGIE.
Why would anyone want to support this practice anyway even if it was safe , all this venomoid business is for is selfish cruel individuals who want a hot snake but is to sh*t scared and dumb to actually own one with the venom intact . personally i find it disgusting
-
Re: stop this barbaric practice
Hey steveo, i was checking out that Venomoid Inc website and it is a truly disgusting website. It makes you wonder how many snakes have died in the process of these barbaric rituals so that they can have a few healthy venomoid snakes just to make themselves some money at the expense of some of the least understood yet beautiful and awe-inspiring animals on the planet.

So what if they CAN digest prey? The thing is that they are being robbed of their venom just for some moron who's too afraid to keep a hot.
If you can keep a venemoid, you can keep a hot.

Re: stop this barbaric practice

Declawing a cat is just as barbaric.
If you don't want a cat to scratch don't get a cat.
Declawing can lead to a lot of problems in the future. A large quantity of cats that are declawed and in shelters were turned in because the cats began peeing where they shouldn't.
Imagine having your toe nails ripped out and then being expected to walk on litter to go to the bathroom. Many cats associate litter box with pain and will find other places to go.
I would never declaw a cat and I urge others not to as well.

Venomous snakes use their venom to kill. They don't constrict.

They use it to kill AND digest they're prey which is also a problem with making them into venomoids. Iv read that they dont have all the acids in their stomach to help break down the eatin prey as a non-venomous snake would have. They run into alot of problems like they're poop being backed up..... sorry, I forgot the technical term for both of those.

actually, to get picky, and please dont take offense, but declawing a cat is worse than ripping out your toenails. if you hold your hand up and look at the top knuckles on your fingers...in the nail area.
now, cut that finger off at the knuckle. THATS how they declaw cats, and I wholeheartedly agree with you. it is a barbaric practice and should NOT be legal.

Re: stop this barbaric practice
no offense, you are exactly correct
