In deed that is sad but here is my take on it. If your going to be dumb enough to give out your address to some one you do not know on a public forum like myspace.com then bad things will happen. Killing is more than wrong and I'm not saying that this little girl asked for it or put her address up there, but I do happen to know quite a few young girls that do post there addresses, phone numbers and e mail addresses along with adding every Tom, Richard , and Herry that she "finds hot" then she wonders why some ******* breaks in to her home and rapes her. If you play by the rules My Space is a safe place, it is thoughs that dont follow rules and get stupid that have the bad things happen to them. and that is my $00.02

Never had a MySpace; I never have time for LJing; got an LJ account, but it is mainly to catch up with my one friend who updates hers daily, who I do not see much.. I haven't updated mine in about 6 months or more!

I think that's true pretty much across the net, as well. Plenty of predators are on all forums, chats, web sites, everything. I don't see the point in avoiding one site due to one incident.

i was watching a show about myspace and this guy sat down and within about 2 minutes he has done a search of myspace on females between the ages of 12-15 and it gave him a list... he clicked on some till he found a girl online... she had her school and her hometown on her bio and he IM'd her and was chatting with her. all within minutes.

i think the point is... kids feel invinsible - like the world is small and safe. they don't get that there are predators out there... hunting.

i couldn't believe myspace had a search function like that... seems rediculous to me.

i have no idea either... except it showed the screen as he typed and that's what he entered and it gave him a huge list complete with pics of each girl.

    scared the crap outta me.

perhaps they changed it after that show? (i think it was 20/20 or dateline or something... )

okay so here's an example, i just clicked on the link for the group...

found zingers workplace plus the town he lives in. clicked on his girlfriend who's listed below... from there we can see where she likes to hang out and what she drives.

and that's just from a light browse.

I don't use Myspace either, and I saw the show that you saw. The age that keeps the information private is 14 and under. It was a police investigator that hooked the girls with their mothers' permission. All he had to do was get on their buddy list and act like a teen boy and they were giving up information to him, willing to meet him etc.

There was a girl on a Weight Watchers forum that I was on who was convinced that no one could track her just from her user name on the WW board. Another member came back with - your street number is: 123, your last four digits of your phone number are 6789, your father's name is and your mother's name is, you have two older brothers and a younger sister and your brothers attend these universities. Do you need more convincing? Needless to say, it freaked this girl out majorly and just brought home how important it is to realize just how easy it is to get information about people over the internet, and you never know who's looking or wants to track you down.

These are very good points, Robin.
Personally, I feel that it's parental responsibility to teach kids and teens about internet safety, just as we've taught them not to get in a stranger's car or help a stranger find their lost puppy.
