    Baby surprise
I haven't been around here at all this summer, life has been hetic.

Just a couple of recents shots. About 3 weeks ago, when I was at Arachnocon, this happened:

    http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/7...lbabiesqe3.jpg

She had 35 babies total. 2 died a watery grave, as I had set up a temporary moat around her deli cup, in case any of the babies crawled out before I could get in there and seperate them all.

I fed them all last night, it went well. With these unexpected additions, I now have over 100 inverts in my care! :O

    These are C. gracilis babies.

So about two days ago one of my C. vittatus scorpions had babies as well.

I collected 5.6.0 C. vitattus scorpions at Arachnocon, and I expected at least two of them to be gravid. I'll try and get a good picture later, I don't want to distrub the mother too much. I've seperated her from the rest of the colony though.

    Good news and nice surprises!

How many younglings do the vitattus typically drop as compared to the gracilis?

We were in our newest favorite reptile store on Saturday getting snakey din-dins and one of the guys there was separating itsy-bitsy baby scorpions into tiny deli cups...insane how small they were and how painstakingly the guy was sifting through the mom scorpions deli cup to find the babies (she was in another cup by herself keeping an evil eye on the guy "What are you doing with mah babies?!"). =D

I would guess that the averages are about the same (30ish?). Atm she looks like she has about 20, but the babies are smaller than the C. gracilis babies were. I'll give a full count in a couple weeks when they are ready to come off her back and I'll start seperating them into vials.

Wow, that is awesome; reminds me of a crayfish i saw last summer with a ton of teeny babies on its back.
Do you plan on keeping them or selling? I would think that local pet stores would be interested in them...

    Re: Baby surprise
I'm selling. I plan on keeping a few, but I don't need 60 more scorpions!

I have a communal group of 11 C. vittatus scorpions. I may keep a few babies, but almost all of those will be sold. Those babies that will not be sold will be planned for release back into the area the adults were collected in.

I have an advantage of living close to Lee Watson's reptile swap, so I can always put down the money for a table if I need to. I can also contact one of the invert dealers and see if they want some babies in a sale/trade as well.

One of the C. gracilis babies has died, I don't think it was eating, and at any rate, some loss is to be expected. I'm waiting to make sure I've got them fairly well established before I start selling them.

I took pictures of the C. vittatus mother a couple days ago, but the camera battery died in the middle of the photo session and I haven't had a chance to see how the pictures turned out.

Seperated almost all of the C. vitattus babies last night.

I've got 29 seperated into individual vials, and 4 more are still clinging to her back. I'll check on the 4 in a few days, and see if they're left her back and are ready to be seperated.

    Re: Baby surprise
Yeah, I tell ya, I don't know how the invert dealers do it. Feeding/watering around 100-150 or so takes long enough. I can't imagine taking care of 5000 inverts.

The other 4 left her back last night and were seperated.

Mom is now back in the adult communal tank.

Cool ass stuff. I don't know much about inverts but what kind of market is there for them? I'm not a big fan of bugs, spiders, etc but I find it all pretty cool..

    Re: Baby surprise
You probably wouldn't make as much money off of them as you would snakes, the most expensive one I've ever seen is the Singapore Blue at 100 bucks, unless you are a huge dealer. If that is what you're asking?

    Re: Baby surprise
That was probably a WC singapore blue imported. Standard price for a singapore blue is around $230 or so.

The P. sp. "tigris" (I dont' recall it's new name atm) will run you about $375.

I don't think there are as many people into "bugs" as there are people into herps, so the overall market is probably smaller. However, in the US there are about 8-10 full time invert dealers. Most T's on average will run about $40-60 or so.

It is an extremely addicting hobby, more so than snakes. T's take up a lot less room and almost all species are fine at room temp. The average hobbyist collection is around 100. The invert forum I read has 2,813 active members, (with about 8,000 registered) and it has some international forums for people in certain areas (like a canada only section, along with the rest of the site). According to the stats, 592 people have visited that board today :)

    Re: Baby surprise
Yet another surprise, although I have no pictures.

One of the female flat rock scorpions, which I have owned since March 2005, dropped about 40 babies. I thought she was going to molt and didn't see that she had babies (flat rock scorpions hide in the rocks all the time) until there were babies running around the tank.

I've never paired up this female...and I have no idea how long she stored the sperm either.

I think I have just enough vials to make it through one more baby scorpion surprise.

Just one of a few shots of the invert room, since I had all the scorpion babies show up.

There is 1 baby scorpion in each vial on the floor.
