Can you make a Nile handleable?
Ok, I have the chance to get a hatchling Nile monitor but the little i've read and heard about these guys is you CANT tame them down? I just wanted to know what ya'lls opinions are about them?

no monitor is going to be "tame" but it is possible to make any monitor handleable with a lot of patience and work. did you check out that link to the kingsnake thread that we gave you a few days ago?

i honestly would advise you not to get nile without some experience with other varanids under your belt. they get very large and can be very aggressive. they are not a lizard to be underestimated and i would seriously advise you too hold of on getting one until you KNOW you can handle one.

Are you a glutton for punishment? :confuzd: Niles are about the *worst* pet lizard you could possibly have. Even our gila monsters are easier to handle than the nicest Nile I've ever seen.

(DISCLAIMER: Gila Monsters should only be handled by those who are trained and proficient in dealing with venomous & potentially dangerous animals. This is not to make light of their potency!)

Point taken. I had a feeling they would be pretty nasty. I sure hate it because they are so beautiful when they become adults. Well on to the croc monitor. ;)

i know a lot you arent fans of reptile maganize, but this months issue is on the emerald tree monitor... very interesting read; and a lot of it applies to all monitors.

Yeah, I think the teeth would make me second guess. They have a 6 foot one at a local store and they won't sell it because of it's potential but if you could start out a baby and had the living space to a house one I don't think you can get any better.

We have a tame Croc monitor. His name is Papa & he's a sweetheart! Of course, it took a lot of work to make him that way, but he's a cool scrapper!
