*****Official Pic Thread*****
Ok, The past few days i've noticed there hasn't been alot of activity on the Monitor and Tegu forum so I thought of this great idea. How about a pic thread of any monitor or tegu. With the pic include age and species. I will get my pics up later ( no digital camera ) but until then let's get it started and get the activity back on the boards. Thanks, Trey

You're right, Marshall - nice to see the little guy :) AGAIN feeding my desire to want an ackie ... :D

Re: *****Official Pic Thread*****
Cute little guy!!! Sue, what subsrate is he kept on?
-
Re: *****Official Pic Thread*****
Currently he's kept on 100% plain, additive free, fertilizer free topsoil. Once his full-size viv is done I'm going to mix 10% sand into the topsoil.

Re: *****Official Pic Thread*****

Re: *****Official Pic Thread*****
Those are all awesome. How much does it cost to feed yours Razaiel?
-
Re: *****Official Pic Thread*****
Hmmmm , now let me see, a fortune?? Hahahaha
It costs me like prob about £80 per month.... ($100 more or less)
I met a really awesome B&W Tegu yesterday - but I can't afford any more :(
He was an adult someone had left for my friend (who runs a reptile shop) to look after. He was totally awesome and really handleable - weighed a ton too ;)

Re: *****Official Pic Thread*****
matt, you might want to think about feeding less rodents. try feeding fish, crayfish, worms, shrimp, whatever reptiles you may be able to get ahold of, etc. a varied diet is best.
LINK: http://www.varanus.nl/forum1/viewtopic.php?id=215 took me forever to dig that up. LOL.

Here is a picture of the largest member of the storri crew that I took tonight :) I would guess that he is around 7-8 inches long now. The other two are also doing great......growing quick too! These three go through crickets like you would not believe ;)

Thanks Marshall....Your red ackie is looking great as well. These storri have been interesting to keep so far. Their behaviors are very interesting to watch. I have noticed that they don't really care for digging deep tunnels very much.....however, they love to tunnel under things. All the documents concerning v. storri that I had read before getting these were right.....the majority of the time, they can be found in the wild in U-shaped tunnels under rocks.....sure enough....they love to do that :)

Re: *****Official Pic Thread*****
thanks! i guess i should post some new pics of him. hes gotten much bigger since i last posted about him.
ive noticed the same thing with my ackie. usually his tunnels are only about 8-10 inches until the "pocket" where he sleeps (hes about a foot and a half), and they're always out from under things (usually the bottom level of the stack) like you said. never out in the open.
have you noticed yours leaving their sleeping/basking/favorite place to take a dump? i have a few theories about what this might be as ive talked to field researches that have noticed the same thing and have told me what they think it might be.
what did you seal that cage with?

LOL.....mine always go in the basking spot for some reason. But from the cage cleaning I have done.....no feces in burrows.

Re: *****Official Pic Thread*****
when Retes' filthy boards and Retes' claims that varanids mark their territory with feces was brought up it was suggested by one of the researchers a talked to (Sam Sweet to be exact) that the monitors could probably be going near one of their important places (i.e. basking spot) for fear of being caught by a predator if they wondered away from a hiding/basking place.
i noticed this also. when my ackie was in a 20 gallon aquarium with one hiding spot hiding spot other then the stack under the basking light he would always go on the stack. when i moved him into a larger cage with many hiding spots he would always go on the very opposite end of the 5 foot cage.
why? that was also brought up. Sam has seen that a lizards in the wild would wonder from a vital place such as a rock or hollow tree trunk/log to go 15 or so feet away because to a predadator finding the poop = finding the lizard.
i believe them having to bask/sleep 6 inches away from their feces is very stressful for them. you have to consider the ways they would evade a preadator in the wild and "stratigically placing" poops is probably one.
