be prepared to house and feed a large monitor like a savannah. they're not really a good beginner monitor, IMO. some people think differently, thats just my oppinion.

I've got a sav - wouldn't have been my choice for a first monitor (I was landed with it basically -long story). I think an ackie would be better although I don't (yet) have any. They have all the monitor personality packed into a smaller, more handleable size. If you've seen any of my other posts I'm now preparing to make for my sav a good solid 8x4x4 enclosure - they need 1 1/2 - 2ft of topsoil so you have to think about water-proofing. Food bills are enormous. Mainly insects should be what they eat - rather than mainly rodents - which can be fattening which is why many savs get obese. I'm currently spending £100 (approx $180) a month on locusts alone. (must get into breeding locusts).

they grow FAST if taken proper care of. he was 7 inches and 8 grams when i got him on may 23 and now he's around 11 inches and weighs 26 grams.

he eats 12+ crickets a day and a mouse pinkie every sunday.

while they're young your supposed to feed them a more insect based diet, offering meats 1 maybe 2 times a week. once they've become adult you can start offering more meats in the diet but it should remain mostly insectivorous.

as hatchlings feed them as much as they will eat everyday and as aults scale back feeding for maintenance.

    Re: pics of ackies plz
well you can feed pinkies while they're young 1 or 2 times a week, but they will still do great on just dusted insects. i give my young ackie a pinkie mouse every sunday. try not to overdue the pinkies because they are pretty fatty. the diet should be mainly insects while they're young

once they're adult there's no need to feed them pinkies because they can eat larger mice, and day old quail, etc. you dont want to feed them JUST meats. once they're adults it should be mostly insects but with more meat then a hatchling would get.
