it comes with a little clip thing--the clip sticks to the tank and you just slide the thermometer onto it and it is held into place.

That's the exact thermometer we are talking about most often. It doesn't have to hang up high on the wall. It should actually sit right on the substrate. I prop mine up in one corner of the cool side of the tank and run the probe over to the warm side and tuck it under the warm-side hide. Some people use a little strip of sticky-sided velcro to attach it to the side of the enclosure. I've done both, and find that propping it up works just fine and has no risk of the snake being exposed to sticky stuff.

(The snake WILL move it around sometimes, but it's no big deal to just put it back where it belongs.)

no it give you the temp on that side of the tank.

Re: * Anyone have this? *
Yes it has a probe to record the temps under the "Outside" bar. On the gauge it can be set for top temp inside and then temps "Outside" ( the one w/ the probe and cord)and then the bottom is for humidity.

You can set the gauge on one end of the cage and then run the probe to the other side or stick under a hide or however you set up your cage. The probe actually has a little sticky on it.
I notice that one says it has a stand, don't use the stand. A few years ago someone on here had the stand up in the cage and there snake got caught in it and was choking. ( anyone remember that ? ) So prop it up or I use two small pcs of 2 side sticky tape.

Ummmmm...yes. I mean...not EVERYone uses a thermostat, but most people do. Anyone using any sort of under-tank-heating source should have it controlled with a reliable t-stat. At the very least, you should have a rheostat (lamp dimmer) so you can control by hand how much heat is put out. Otherwise, they can get hot enough to seriously burn your snake and/or damage the enclosure it is attached to.

Most of us use both. The thermostat controls the temps, and a thermometer will only measure or read the temps.

That negates a lot of outside factors which will affect temperatures. What if the room gets hot or cold? How will ur bulb adjust for such common everyday factors without a tstat?

If you are asking for my suggestion, I would get something from here and It won't cost you several hundreds of dollars. Good luck.

I just have to ask, how much research did you do before you bought your ball python? IE, did you sit down and calculate the real costs for caring for it and getting it set up properly? If you can't afford a good thermostat, what will you do if your ball gets sick and needs expensive vet care?

    Ryan,

I believe the point is you did not correctly calculate the costs. These questions regarding thermostats and thermometers are all things that should have been answered and set up and in working condition several days prior to bringing home your ball python.

The basics for your ball python should have been more than covered with $400. You need a heat source to keep your hot side at between 92 and 94 degrees and possibly another heat source (as I do) to keep your cool side between 82 and 84 degrees. UTH's (under tank heaters) are great since they do not decrease your humidity (especially handy when using a tank with a screen lid) which needs to be around 50% during normal times and 70% during sheds. Digital thermometers are better at reading temps and tstats need to be used to regulate each UTH (or bulb) you use. The Petco tstat is pretty crappy (scientific term!) and does not regulate your temps as well as you need for a ball python.

BTW - you should also have two hides (preferably identical) one on the warm side and one on the cool side.

Try not to get too offended by all the advice thrown your way, but realize most of it is coming from more experienced bp owners that are simply concerned for you and your new snake. Good luck!

you know, although i agree that a lot of these questions dould have been answered using the search function, dude, ur coming across totally harsh.

if you don't want to answer his questions, then don't! no-one is making you. He's got a right to ask, and recieve responses. He doesn't have the option of not asking if he doesn't know about the search function and thats besides the point cause if he wants he could NEVER use the search function.

you on the other hand, have the option of not answering. I understand as a fairly newbie yourself you want to help and add to the community but this is not the way you'll make yourself look better. Newbie bashing is not something that has been common around here and i personally would hope that it could continue that way.

it's one thing to discuss newbies in threads dedicated to helping them fit in or whatever, but don't go "yelling" at one just because you are tired of answering his questions.

I'm just trying to point him in the right direction. I've seen him make some dump posts (like the 3200g BP) and ask the same question over again. I've been bashed for not using the search function at other sites, as well (probably rubbed off on me). Just trying to help him as much as anyone else. Hope I didn't hurt his feelings. I'm aware this is a kind forum (kindest I've been a member on).

I have an acu-rite that I like better; it is wireless, but then again it has no humidity gauge so I need to use my old fashioned one for that; if I could find one both wireless And humidity gauging, I would be happier!
