How many bad bites so far?

How many bad bites from your redtails have you got? Just got my first real bite. I didn't SCRUB my hands after holding the rats, I just washed them for maybe 30 seconds and Ruby went into full feeding mode even though she apears to be in shed. Never changing water bowls again without SCRUBBING my hands first. I'll get pics when I get a new USB cable. Stupid mistake. Bite marks go from my pointer finger all the way to my pinky finger, imagine if she was much bigger than 5'!!

I answered never (btw it's "too" not "to" lol) but it's not from being too smart, it's just that the only bite big Rauri ever inflicted was so minor it couldn't be called bad at all. I've been bit by a BP worse than Mike was nailed by Rauri, heck I was nailed by a preggie female rat the other day that did worse damage. Bites happen, most of them are our fault or just part of owning snakes so I never really think about them much. They are so infrequent around our house (though we get hissed at here and there) :)

Apache has drawn blood on me a few times; one was pretty bad on my wrist! But I always keep in mind that it was my fault. He is just not a snake you can grab without thinking from his enclosure; and he can bite from ANY angle!

This is the only bite Rauri ever did. He did once snap at my swinging ponytail but didn't connect (but disconcerting though lol). Mike and I didn't even really count this as a bite, more of a love tap. Rauri never even clamped down, just basically slapped Mike's arm with his mouth. People at his work nearly freaked though and wanted to see the big snake bite. I think they were actually disappointed that it basically had disappeared by the next day LOL.

i have 20+boas and have never been bit. i am extreemly cautious. i have been struck at. i used to handle wild rattle snakes as a teenager. i just use the same wearyness.

Yep, You always have to remember its always your fault. I wasn't expecting it. She usually hisses when I open the cage if she doesn't want to come out otherwise she meets me at the door. I knew the rat smell wouldn't come off that easily. Joanna, I can't wait to post pics of my bite, it will make you thankful that he didn't tear your hand up.

I've been bitten by the babies, but never by the adults (knocks on wood). One of my babies really intends harm on my thumb. LOL!!!

lol, the avator made your post even better. I'm really looking forward to posting pics of my bite marks now. I better start taking more precautions now that shes starting to get some size. At 5' and 8 lbs. its not that big of a deal but when she gets bigger a bite like this will leave some scar tissue I think

I have had my red tail for almost 2 years, I have been struck at..only at feeding time while he was in his tub and struck at the movement outside the tub, but never has he struck at me otherwise.... nor have I been bitten.

I've only been bitten by a few babies and juvis, nothing to take pics of really.

LOL. It's that other forum that loves the bite and blood pics so much you'd think it was a group of vampires getting high on them.


I've (so far touch wood) never been bitten by any of my reptiles - not even the Sav - I can read him like a book now and can tell what sort of mood he's in. I hope he doesn't take me by surprise one day.

I have been bitten by wild snakes. Rat snakes, corn snakes ect never my snake.. all though my gecko has chomped me more than once. He's fistie.. LOL. When feeding I have a cloth bag and a pair of tongs that keeps the rattie smell off my hands as much as possiable.

lmao, great idea. I use tongs for feeding but I just got done catching the rats, the dog knocked their tub over. I learned that it takes more than 30 seconds of washing to get smell off your hands and arms. Gotta rething my hand washing skills.....

yea I got a canvis bag from the bank one they use to ship oin out in and put the rat in in to dispose of it the just reach in with the tongs and get the rat. Never really touch the rat. I have a cat that would love to play with a rat scented hand

Think its only once or twice by a red tail,least 6 times by various of our or pet store bp's. least 4 dog bites, few cat bites and scratches,been bitten by a goat and a horse, several rats a mice and a pike. It seems if it has teeth it will bite me which is just one reason I persoanlly will never own a hot snake. But other then the horse and the stupid goat most of the bites were reactions to things I did around the creature that i could have avocided and well i just think I must taste good.

You know they say, "sharks are like dogs, they only bite if you touch their private parts"!! lmao I loved that guy from 50 First Dates. Guess the same applies to dogs, cats, rats, mice, goats, and pike! lmao J/K of course

I'd like to change my answer to Never. I've been tagged a couple times, but it wasn't anything major. Baby ball bite from Ody and then Hadrian's half-assed nip. I swear, being bitten by a ball is more surprise than bad bite. I love my boys, though...

I chose 'never'. Hera's tagged me once, but just left mouth-shaped little pinholes and a bruise on the base of my finger and hand. Nothing even to draw blood.

Mine was freaky when I got home yesterday - I'd given him a larger than usual tub of water the evening before and by the time I got back yesterday lunchtime he'd been in the tub (he can get his whole self in it and swim around practically) - there was topsoil smeared up the walls, on the glass and all over everything and one very guilty looking filthy monitor glaring at me. I opened the door to talk to him and he immediately kicked up a storm hissing and flinging hisself around in there. I just left him to calm down for a bit ;) You just don't want to mess with monitors in that mood :bolt:

I've never been bitten either but I dont' think its because I'm too smart - it's because I've been lucky or haven't had my rtb long enough to get bitten. She's 1 1/2 years old, 4+ ft. long and very docile but she hissed at me today from her hide. I guess she didn't want any human looking in at her! My ball python has never hissed or bitten me.

I agree with the Sav owner....lizards tend to be much worse than snakes. I have been bitten pretty good by a full grown Argus monitor and a large Tegu - both which hurt like hell.

I must have the most docile red-tail boa ever! She never ever ever even struck at me! (she's just over 3' now)

Apache has bitten me a few times; all were my fault. Twice was when he was not eating a rat and i removed it!

An Argus bite :eek: ouch!!

My sav still hasn't gotten me yet so far - I can read sav language pretty good now - (well, his anyway). The only bite I got was from my tiniest little rankins dragon and that was because he mistook my finger for a wax worm - it didn't hurt at all of course and I thought it was really funny :D

i was lookin over a thread on another forum yesterday and someone showed a pic of a guy who got bit by a medium sized croc monitor. there were two HUGE gashes on the back of his hand. ill try to find it for you guys. it was nuts!

I'll never take croc monitor off my wanted list!! Look at the ceiling fan, you can see the reflection in the blood!!

the monitors on my wanted list include but are not limited to (:P ): varanus prasinus, varanus storri, varanus caudolineatus, varanus eremius, varanus macreai(sp?), varanus panoptes horni, varanus giganteous, varanus mertensi, and varanus griseus. im probably forgetting something though.

croc monitors dont really do anything for me. they are a beautiful monitor that definitely warrants respect though.

I got a nasty bite today - he flew right at my arm and held on (darned parrots :( ) I now got two distinct beak indents and bruising from both upper and lower mandibles. I trust my sav more than my parrot.

I guess I've been gypped by my snakes - no bites yet - not even a hiss from Inga!

I picked the 1-3 bites, my 8ft RTB took a chunk out of my hand once. Long long story if I find the thread I will post it. Mistaken identity I presume. LOL
No stitches or anything, just a lot of triple antibiotic and bandages.

Hes a little over 2'. The bite is just pure pain. You try and move and they tighten up and squirm causing more pain. Basically its either sit and wait for them to release or take the pain and run for the vinegar or the liquor cabinent

It seems like whenever I feed my little boy and don't feed Ruby, she strikes at me. I guess that doesn't happen all the time, I usually bring a small meal along just incase

we talking snake bites or any animal bites in genral. Too many to count the whole reason I don't play with anything posinous. Seems all the animals in the house are in the bite mike club. Can a gecko bite?
