Re: my snake choked me
he probably wasnt choking you as in attacking you. he was just holding on.

Re: my snake choked me
Mine does that all the time...he's not going to kill you.

Re: my snake choked me
I can't be the only one that rolled my eyes at this post.
I must say I seriously seriously doubt he even 'considered' constricting you. When you went to grab him his first instinct is to hang on, you had let him around your neck, what else was he suppose to 'grab'?

Re: my snake choked me
Well if python kid is a younger kid it might have been rather disconcerting so let's be kind here folks.
PK if you are concerned simply do not allow the snake to encircle your neck. Even though our BP's are not a danger to my children it is a standard and firm rule in my house that no minor child is allowed to have a snake on their neck. It's just a precaution we feel teaches our children to be respectful of the power of a snake in case they are handling much larger and more powerful snakes than those we currently house. We also fostered a large and powerful 6 foot plus BCI so it was also appropriate when handling him.

Re: my snake choked me
You're right, I apologize, my 'speak my mind' tendancies take the bit and run with it sometimes.
-
Re: my snake choked me
Oh heck no need to apologize, mine do too. Just my "mom" mode came out here. :)

Re: my snake choked me
When I had mine on my neck he decided to try and go down my shirt instead. He wasn't gonna find anything down there. :rolleye2:

Re: my snake choked me
I tuck my BCI's tail under my shoulder and keep my other arm between the rest of the snake and me so he can't wrap himself round my neck. He's usually really good about it and is usually happy to sit there. He's of a size now that he can have a wander round the living room floor under close supervision (that goes for our little girl BCI, Zag too - she's the same age). Hubby did actually let Zig wrap round his neck tonight (silly boy - my hubby, not the snake) and I had to gently take him off. Zig didn't exactly help as he'd tied his tail round his body like a shoelace. I could swear he was smirking. Zig's well over 4 1/2ft long now. Zag is not far behind, only a couple of inches shorter. Usually it's the females who are bigger but not in this case although I think Zag will eventually overtake Zig.
Our Royal Pythons aren't a problem. Byron is quite small yet - just over 2 1/2ft and he likes sitting on my shoulders. He's got an uncanny knack of knowing if I've got a headache and he'll gently massage the back of my neck. For a Royal he's as bold as brass. Our other Royal is quite shy, but he'd a really bad start to life. He's really healthy now, and I hope happy:D
Even though our BCIs are still quite young and fairly small, they are getting quite powerful so we always make sure there are two of us when handling them. Better safe than sorry both from our safety point of view and also the snakes.

Oh yes - nothing like a snakey massage ... :relax:
When mine are round my neck I keep my fist between my neck and their bodies - it stops them from squeezing the neck too tight.

Re: my snake choked me
I use to put mine around my neck all the time , but now since he's so big it's become uncomfortable. He squeeze's very hard so I just hold him now.

I got a Red Tail the other day and my dad suggested that when it gets older, just put a big tree branch in my room and let it roam. Of course I had to explain to him why doing that isn't the greatest idea, but we still laughed at the idea. My mom is so clueless she doesn't know the potentials of them. ;)

:D Well of course, you have to make sure they're trained to come when they're called first ;) and make sure the little kitty isn't in your room too.

Re: my snake choked me
Its not likely but the muscles contracting have been know to cause people to faint. Anyone know where I can find the article about it? Although a ball won't hurt you, its always a good practice to get into not letting them wrap around your neck. My biggest boas is over 5' and when I put her on my neck to see her strength(STUPID idea) I started to get light headed. Almost like when your sinuses are making you light headed. I'm sure leaving her on could have POSSIBLY knocked me out. Just my 2 copper's to add in

Re: my snake choked me
The thing is, if they do wrap round your neck, they exert such an even pressure you could black out before you know it. It's easy to see why in the wild they are such proficient hunters. Truly amazing animals.
BTW Python Kid. I'm old enough to be your Granny (I turn 50 this year) :D

Re: my snake choked me
that always happens to me, my snake did that today, he wrapped around my neck just to hold on and not fall off, then i gently pulled on him and he came right off, no big deal

Re: my snake choked me
i have a male hoggie and i just looooove him... a really great snake with lots of personality and energy! not like a ball who will sit there and relax... my hoggie wants UP - UP higher! yesterday during his 'outside time' he climbed a tree... every single branch was investigated till he got to the top and then he choose the branch he liked the best and went to sleep.
4 hours later we brought him down! he hissed like crazy (hissing is his way of communicating... means nothing but he looooves to do it!) kinda sounded like air being released from a near by tire LOL

Hi Mousch
The snake in my avatar is a salmon hypo BCI. Before I got him I was wondering whether to get a Hogg Island - maybe one day ... ;)
-
Re: my snake choked me
Sorry, It looked "orangey" like the hog did. Same colour... much larger snake :o
