Moving with snakes....

I may be moving from North-East Maryland to South Florida in the upcoming month(s). I'll be driving and it can take any where from 16-18hours to get there. I'll be taking my ball python and my corn snake.I've never driven more then two hours with any animal in my car before.

What should I do to get them down there safely and all that jazz?

Put each snake in its own bag. A pillowcase turned inside out will work fine. Tie the bags securely. Then put each in its own small box with a secure lid. If it's plastic, be sure it has holes for ventilation. If necessary, pack some wadded paper around the snake so its bag can't slide around in the box.


Then place the boxes on the floor or seat of your car, but make sure they won't fall or slide around. And make sure they're not directly under an AC vent.

If you need to spend the night somewhere, take the snakes inside with you, but it won't be necessary to take them out of their packaging.

MOST IMPORTANT....Never ever leave the animals in a parked car during the day!! Even a few minutes can heat that car up to deadly temperatures. When you gas up, leave the windows down and do it as quickly as possible. Plan on eating drive-through during the day.

I've traveled cross-country twice now with my critters, and it really just takes some common-sense planning. Good luck!

I'll be only stopping to gas up and will be grabbing a bite to eat at those times. I'm just trying to get stuff planned now so in case that day comes faster then I'm more prepared on what to do, etc!

Someone told me to do this:

"Make sure the snakes are properly caged for such a long trip in a car with defective AC.

Best recomendation is to place them in a cooler, with plenty of ice packs so they can hibernate. As you get to your final destination, just open the cooler, and let them recover under direct sunlight. You may also help to stimulate their recovery by manipulating their anal orifices. Or rubbing them with alcohol."

Why does that just sound like a bad idea?

AHHHH i don't think placing them in a cooler for a length of time would be a good idea.I am not even going to touch the manipulating part :O .Please pm me the site where you got this message from so i can avoid it :P .lol

Sadly, this was the only that survived that last trip. I didn't notice the cooler was cracked, and the other 6 babies drowned in the condensation pool during the 5 day long car journey.

On the other hand, my pet falcon loved the delicacy of 6 fresh baby snakes. It is not an everyday item in his diet :)"

Good advice from JLC. Keep 'em protected from bumps and extreme temps, and they'll do fine! All the breeders shipping 'em all over the planet can't be doing much wrong, and they use the pillowcase/bedding/box all the time. :D :D
