Belly Scar on possible "rescue" BP
The local pet store where I get rats has a ball python that was "surrendered" to them a couple weeks ago. She is about 1500 grams, and looks to be in good shape, but she has a scar and small wound on her belly. The scar is quite long. An ideas what this could be from?

At this point I think they would just about give her to me, but I wanted to make sure this is not caused by something that could be transferred to others. Also, would this effect her for breeding later?

I've seen really really bad cases of scale rot leave long scars on the belly after it's been cleared up .... that would be my best "guess" without seeing the animal in person ... a bad thermal burn on the belly might also heal like that.

Regardless ... you should always QUARANTINE QUARANTINE QUARANTINE .... new animals from unknown or untrustworthy sources just aren't worth it unless you do!!!!

The other thought that I had was that it would be a shame if the scar was surgical ... removal or a cyst or perhaps worse could have left internal scar tissue that could make breeding impossible ... although, I feel that would be a long shot.

If she's a freebie ... and you QUARANTINE ... you really can't go wrong at 1500 grams. ;)

I would not dream of anything else. We have 3 separate quarantine areas throughout the house, and Sunny just got to go to her Vision cage, so I have a space open. That is the single best piece of advice I have picked up from this site. When we got Sunny, a few mites showed up on her a couple days after we got her home, and we kept them from being spread because we quarantined her were extremely careful about cross contact.

My feelings exactly. I know that right off the bat a visit to the vet will be needed, and he will probably want to do some antibiotics, but you can't beat free even if she never breeds. :)

    Thanks Adam!

Pop on into that thread on the new hot rod theme and let Judy know, it may be a small glitch she is able to fix...

Just a quick update, we did end up getting this girl. She was not free ... but we did get her for $115. She weighed 1515 grams the day we brought her home (she had refused to eat at the store for a couple weeks), and now after two voracious feedings here she is 1677 grams. :D

My wife named her Scarlet ....

Her scar looks much better. The open "hole" at the one end has closed up, and we did not have to treat her with antibiotics. The vet thought it to be a burn scar.

Oh she's lovely Neil. Rotten that she got burnt and injured but sounds like she's doing much better in your care.

She's beautiful!! Looks to me like you got a steal of a deal on her, even with a vet bill thrown in.

    Thanks all.

I hope she will breed for us this coming year. The vet did not think there would be any problem because of her injury, but time will tell.

I love her odd pattern, and hopefully she and Blaze hit it off. I thought I heard a little whistle coming from his cage when we were taking her past him on the way to the quarantine room ... ;) :date:

True dat! The drumming of "Quarantine!" advice from bp.net stopped the spread of mites between our snakes...=D

That's awesome that her scar looks like it's healing up. BPs seem like pretty hardy animals; with proper love and care, they certainly seem to thrive.

And she is gonna be one lucky snakey girl! Blaze is a mega hotty!
