we set up in our backyard a 4 foot high, 18 foot diameter, 5000+ gallon pool.

Today, while my brothers were in it a hole opened up in our backyard, apparantly there was a dry well or septic tank that was there like 60 years ago that want sealed porperly and we are suffering for it. the water gushed under our backporch down our basement stairwell, smashed the lock clean of the door, and covered the entire basement (about 1000 square foot) with 10 inches of water)

we've been ripping out carpets and moving things ever since. we just finished "all we could do" for tonite.

thank god my brother in law is an expert with construction and has dealt with severe flooding before.

we're just thankful that one brother who was on the pool ladder was "only " swept up aginst the side of the deck and has some scratches and the other brother, who fell into the hole with the pool, got pulled out by the first brother.

i'll post pics later probably tomorow

    ahh... good point!

well, it all started yesterday when i came home from camp to be greeted by my little sister who was in a complete panic.
she grabbed my arm and pulled my into the backyard where i was greeted by this image...
    http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c8...6/IMG_0275.jpg
which appeared to be our 5000+ gallon pool collapsed.

i got closer and ralized actually it was this....
    http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c8...6/IMG_0274.jpg

yeah thats right a gaping hole in my backyard.

apparatnly there is some sort of dry well or something down there that gave way and caused the whole pool to collapse with my two brothers in it. (both thank god were not seriously hurt {although i think my littlist brother who ended up inside that hole is still in shock} mostly some scrapes and cuts)

well, u might be wondering where all that water went.
    right here------\/
    http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c8...6/IMG_0277.jpg

it filled this stairwell and burst the door at the bottom open. rippping the lock out.

it pured thru my basement ripping up carpet and destroying all of our stuff. although we lost a lot of things the only thing that really upset us was that a ton of my dads college stuff like his doctorate and his diploma's got soaked but we might be able to save it. anyway we spend the rest of the day ripping out soaking wet carpetand hauling out bookshelves.

here are some pics of the carnage and clean up that followed

I like the rope with the pink caution thingys on it to warn you of the huge gaping hole at the bottom of the stairs!

Just in case your parents aren't already aware, you may need to tear down some of that drywall and see to what extent the water may have damaged other parts of the basement.

Most homeowner's insurance policies should cover you for major expenses should you need to replace much of the finishing in the basement, however there have recently been a lot mold exclusions in policies that may not cover you for cleanup if you begin to have mold issues in the basement.

I work for a company that does nothing but represent individuals and businesses who incur a loss such as your own and we help them through the claims process. PM me if you have any questions.

LMAO!! You have more than half the hole dug. We had flooding before and it was a horible feeling, Had to rip out brand new carpet and replace it. All becuase the people behind us put a driveway in. lol Now everytime it has a heave rain we get 6-7" of water the the garage. Good luck with getting it all sorted out and keep us updated

Figure it this way Alex....it's not a major piss-off it's actually a major blessing. To have two of your brothers in a pool that size when it collapsed and not have anyone hurt, well as a parent I can tell you I bet your parents were counting their blessings afterwards. It's a mess true and that's hard but it could have been so so much worse. I'm glad your brothers are both okay, that must have been very scarey!

thats an outlook my religion stresses very hard. to look for the good in things. as a family tradition after events like this or a death or whatever we sit down together and talk about our blessings....we had a very long sit down and actually i learned something that was averted that could have been REALLY frightening, my little sister (7 years old) had been in the pool with those floaty arm thingys cause she's really nervous in water and doesnt swim well, and she had gotten in a huge shouting match with my brothers in the pool and she stormed off and left, 5 minutes later the ground collapsed. we are very thankful.

a surveyurs coming tomorow and my brother in law, who does these things assures us that we will be fully covered being that it is not considered a flood, the wate is a side effect but all the damage should be covered. again fortunatly he does construction and we are already fixing the damage thru him

the pink things were my idea (it's a side effect of the boots :P)

the dry wall is already torn down 8 inches from the floor across the whole basement (told ya my bro in law was good!)

with the carpets ripped out and about 15 fans blowing every crevase the chance of mold is significantly lowered but we have to still watch for it

thanks for the offer but we already got someone

definatly true. it's funny cause on the phone the insurance company kept saying "we dont cover for kiddy pools collapsing"

and my dads all like "number one this isn't exaclty a kiddy pool, number two the pool didn't just collapse! our backyard did!!!"

A smaller child like that might have been in a very bad way with that much water mass moving that fast. I'm glad your parents and your religion helps you see that even during troubles, there's always blessings to be found.

CRAP!! Well any "piss off of the week" I had was swept away by that!
I'm really glad no one was seriously hurt!
I'm all about trying to find the brighter side usually.. It may a good thing it collapsed when you had the pool over the hole, otherwise, someone may have been walking along, or mowing the yard, when it collapsed!

Well MY piss off has been going on since about 2 months ago. I met someone from my city on a local herp site, who caught a native Garter and decided to keep it.

She didnt like the advice that was given to her by that site for keeping the snake.. She said it "felt like no one cared about her or her snake", and left the site. She also feels it is "somewhat abusive to keep a snake without heat" (in reference to Corn snakes, and other natives, that do fine at room temps) Which is a WHOLE nother rub on me, since I have a couple of natives, and I dont necessarily use heat..

Anyways, the snake's tail had a kink about 3-4" from the tip (WELL below the vent area) it also had retained shed around this area. She asked on the site what to do, and ppl advised her to seek a vet's care if she was concerned..
She claimed to not be able to afford the vet (Which is ANOTHER rub for me) So, the site members told her she should let the snake go if she can't afford medical care for it.

I offered to come by since she lives 2-3 blocks from me, and check out the set-up and the tail since she was "feeling like no one cared". Set up looked fine, but when she got the snake out, I dont know if she slammed the lid on the tail or if it was like that when she got it, but there was an open wound not far from the snake's kink in its tail..It really didnt seem like a major injury, or a life threatening one.. But I told her THEN to take it to the vet..

I OFFERED to take the snake to the vet MYSELF, and she refused..
So I told her how BEST to treat it then, given the circumstances..
Remove the substrate, don't soak her, and use neosporin (or other Triple antibiotic) without lidocaine... I also referred her to a few sites for 2nd opinions on home treatment...Hoping someone would convince her to take the snake to the vet. She's of course, been soaking it, has NOT removed the substrate, and has NOT been using the ointment..Not that it would help on aspen!

She posted pics of the snake FINALLY..The tail is necrotic now, and JUST NOW she has decided to let me take the snake to the vet for her while she goes in to the hospital.. The problem being, I have my own animals, a rescue, and my own bills to pay... I had the money when I offered, and NOW I really don't.
However I will figure out something..Picking the snake up sometime today :)
    JUST HIGHLY FRUSTRATING!!

Oh and the clencher...She had the GALL to PM someone and suggest they take their animal to the vet!:taz:

OK.....thats my rant..And like I said, Nowhere near as bad as the sinking pool!

Hey guys i havent really been around much this year so this is about 3 weeks late in coming just a final update on what happened with our backyard/basement situation from the summer.....

thanks to my bro in law we managed to completelty do redo the basement and actually alter the layout to suit our needs better (basically the back 1/3 of the basement by the outside steps has been converted into an office for my dad to finally restart practicing as a psychologist again) and we made a sorta semi kitchen just with the extra freezer and a microwave and whatever too)

as for the backyard we inspected it and found a second MUCH LARGER sinkhole about 5 feet away from it and me and my dad actually had fun tearing it up and filling it in

and about 3 weeks ago the check from the insurance company came in and they covered E.V.E.R.Y.T.H.I.N.G. thank god

anyways it's good to be back (even if i can't even recognize this site anymore all sorts of newfangled thingamabobs poppin up everywhere.)
